View Full Version : Hard time putting hot-side back on gt35r, help!
e36ALPINE 02-26-2008, 07:27 PM Hey guys, I took the hot side of my gt35r while fitting the exhaust but long story short I'm having a hard time putting it back on. For those of you that know you kind have to press it back together but how the heck are you supposed to do it? I'm scared to death it's not going to be lined up perfect and I'm going to chip a blade or something. What gives? Thanks, Greg
lube the shit out of it
it will burn off
alpinawhitem3 02-26-2008, 07:54 PM My precision has spacer rings, is your turbo like that?
5mall5nail5 02-26-2008, 07:55 PM Theres a back plate in the center section that "presses" in. It should press in when you bolt it together.
e36ALPINE 02-26-2008, 10:00 PM Yeah there are spacer rings but those rings are kinda spring loaded. I tried linning everything up and putting all my weight on it and also giving it some palm smacks but it won't even budge. I also had the idea of just putting the bolts in a start tightening them down a little at a time but the bolts aren't even long enough to reach. I'm sure if I put something over the intake and smacked it with like a rubber mallet it would go down but I don't know how to make sure it's perfectly lined up.
jekaio 02-26-2008, 10:35 PM get some spray silicone.
it will burn off/dry up and it is amazing slick.
i use it everyday at work.
someguy2800 02-26-2008, 11:17 PM try puting the turbine housing in a vise and twisting the center section on. That how I usually get them apart after they've rusted on. Might have to use something to get some leverage.
someguy2800 02-26-2008, 11:22 PM Also I'm not familiar with the gt35's but with some turbonetics ones you can put the turbine wheel in after the housing. Is that an option on yours?
a32guy 02-26-2008, 11:38 PM Wire wheel the exhaust housing, then apply heat if you have to. Then try twisting it in the vice. Agreed, use some sort of anti seize if you can!
Maguiver 02-27-2008, 12:41 AM Put the turbo in the freezer for an hour.

But Chris heat makes metal expand. Wouldn't cold be better as Maguiver said?
SiGmA 02-27-2008, 01:37 AM I think Chris was saying to expand the housing, and slip it on the center cartridge? Sounds solid to me I think..
a32guy 02-27-2008, 02:38 AM Freeze the center section, and heat the housing. Both will yield the desired results.
e36ALPINE 02-27-2008, 09:09 AM I thought this would go back together a lot easier than this , lol , or else I wouldn't have done it. I'll try again when I get home today. If I take the exhaust wheel off couldn't I possilby throw it out of balance or no?
rt turbo 02-27-2008, 10:38 AM e36Alpine, a quick question, were you clocking the turbo? I need to clock my turbine housing 180 degrees for my setup (i have a GT35R also). Am I going to have this issue also you think?
e36ALPINE 02-27-2008, 10:40 AM no you don't have to take it apart to clock it. Just loosen the bolts a little and it will turn very easily.
e36ALPINE 02-27-2008, 05:10 PM alright , seriously, I just spent another hour try to get this thing together and nothing. It's too big to fit in my vice, the bolts are to short to grab ( I may just go buy longer ones ). Heat / cooling doesn't seem to be helping much, lubrication either.
e34m535t 02-27-2008, 05:22 PM To Fit my turbo in my car, I had to maneuver the Turbo minus the exhaust housing to the bottom of the car, Put the Manifold+Exhaust Housing on the engine, then join the turbo to the Exhaust Housing.
I had a tough time getting it to line up perfectly straight, I ended up having to tap it with a hammer, then thread the bolts in progressively and it POPPED right on.
e36ALPINE 02-27-2008, 09:30 PM I'm going to get longer bolts tomorrow. I'll see if I can just slowly squeeze it back on and then switch out the bolts with the shorter ones one at a time. Unless the longer ones work I'll just leave them in.
a32guy 02-27-2008, 09:32 PM Try that, just make sure you crank them in evenly so it pulls the cartridge in straight. Definitely use the shorter bolts though that came in it.
e36ALPINE 02-27-2008, 10:15 PM yeah I'll probably just keep spinning the blade to make sure it doesnt' get too jammed up while making turbo sounds in my head.:alright

I'm Rone-ry... so rone-ry.. Rone-ry, so very rone-ry.....
alpinawhitem3 02-28-2008, 03:05 AM I would not use longer bolts to force it together.
Once I took mine apart and then mistakenly thought the spacers went around what I remember as the seal (long time ago). The turbo wouldn't go back together. I later removed the spacers and installed the CHRA to the exhaust housing. After tightening the bolts I found the CHRA moved in and out. I removed the bolts/retainers installed the spacers correctly (between CHRA and retainer) and turbo went back together.
You should not have to use force to reassemble the turbo.

Really, that's interesting. The way the half circle clips are I really don't see any way of putting them on other than the way I'm doing it/trying to do it.

Yeah I'm an IDIOT! I finally "saw the other way to do it". lol wow. I was trying to put the spacer ring on the inside ring. That's what happens when you take something apart, hear....clink clink clink as something hits the floor and you say to yourself, I'll figure out where that goes later. lol Thanks for the help though.

Glad to help. Happy boosting :buttrock
a32guy 02-28-2008, 02:39 PM Hahaha, wow. Glad to see you figured it out. Nice work Dan!
