any one had a e39 that looses a little coolant to the exhaust, enough to smell , yet does not over heat?

Sounds like a head gasket to me.. or worse. I would get a compression test ASAP. Coolant can foil your o2 sensors, ruin your catalytic converter, etc. It will only get more expensive to fix.
