Synthetic is fine. Elf, Mobil 1 (not M1 5w-30), Royal Purple, European Castrol, etc. are all fine

I use OE Mann filters, from www.bmaparts.com. I won't use Fram, K&N, etc.

Walmart does have very good deals on Mobil-1.

The Mobil-1 Turbo Diesel Truck (TDT) 5w40 oil is probably the best oil M1 makes. It has a fantastic additive package and is a consistent top-performer in test, right up there with Amsoil, Redline and RP.

You may want to check with your local BMW dealer...you may be surprised at how cheap the oil filter kit runs. Many BMW dealerships parts dept sells the kit from somewhere between $10-$20.

You really should get the oil filter kit (whether from the dealer or any aftermarket vendor) which includes the filter, a new O-ring (for the lid), and a new crush washer for the oil drain plug.

Mann or Mahle filters also include the o-ring and crush washer.

Synthetic is not required, but it won't hurt anything either. If you're changing oil at less than 5000 miles, synthetic is a waste of money, IMO. Check out the forums at bobistheoilguy.com, there is more oil info there than you'll ever want to know.

I'm able to see a Mahle/Mann filter kit
http://catalog.drivewire.com/drivewire/baseline/quote-new.jsp?partner=drivewire&year=01/1997-12/2003&product=A6002-90074&application=280699&fm=1 price only $8.72 plus s/h total =$15.47, might go ahead and buy, however will wait till local BMW response to my inquiry on the parts.

I'm changing oil over 5k so it's bout time for it.

Thank you!

They quote me $19.73, not sure if it includes tax. So I went ahead and ordered 2 kits from drivewire.com - it only cost $23.50, that includes shipping :alright:buttrock:redspot

Now wonder which synthetic has the best deal.. Royal blue could be the winner or valvoline..:eyecrazy:eyecrazy:D:D

If you don't have an owners manual...then I guess there's nothing to reference...here's the info from my 95 525iT...and the 2nd image below is from the BMW TIS:

This is a rather simple question. Oil- 0w40/10w40, preferebly Mobile 1. You will need 8 quarts. yes... 8 quarts.

Oil filter from dealer?? advance auto has the "kit" for $12. Forget what brand but i swap it ever 3.5k miles and have clean oil on my 7k mile change. Check your records or test fit the filter first, there was an upgrade to the oil filter housing and it requires a diff. filter than stock. same price: $12
