Last night must have been the night to go out and play or something.

Going down the interstate and I going about 5mph over the limit (80mph). I pass a 2000+ M5. I looked over to admire the car and notice it was a younger guy like I driving. As I passed he kept pace with me. We go through a smaller town known for their police handing out tickets, so naturally we just kept civilized. Once we clear the town (speed limit of 65) I start to accelerate to get back to a nice comfortable speed, he passes me pretty quick, I figure he was going at least 85-90ish. So I thought he wanted to see how bad he would stomp me. I floor it and he had to either NOT be on it fully or he shut down, as I passed him. I was confused. So....after I shut down and go was trying to get back to my cruising speed he blows by and so I down shifted to 3rd and had to quickly shift to 4th. He pulls back into my lane and keeps going. He was at least 4-5 CL's ahead and wasn't pulling, I caught at least .5-1CL on him by 130 or so. Not much of a gain in 3/4 of a mile or so (estimated). But, as we come up to a bend in the interstate he slows down and brakes so hard that I almost ran into the back of him. I had to brake really hard.:eyecrazy But that is the story. I am positive he wasn't trying too hard though as I know M5's are beasts and could rip me apart. Anyone else in a stock E46 M3 get to fully race a M5? I want to know the punishment I was in for!

whats mods do you have? i've pulled on full bolt on e46 m3's, the best mod for that car is gears. my buddy kept up pretty well once he added gears.

I am stock. I have been looking into mods but I haven't decided on what yet as it is so expensive with not much gain. Though weight saving is a good way to start! What type of gear set up are you speaking of?

I know that M5 wasn't giving it all.....there just isn't any other explaination.

By 2000+ you mean an E39, right?

Power to weight wise I guess it's not so crazy to believe that you could keep up with him but he also could have not downshifted as far as he could have, who knows.

the two are actually pretty close under 100mph but up top they are very fast. well modded m3 would probably be about equal to a stock e39.

after he got ( iirc 4.10?) gears, it was a drivers race but the M5 would normally manage to pull a few inches. gears are sick!

Are you sure??? There are guys with S2 setup running 12.48 @ 112 on 3.15 diff and w/o cams. Full S3 should be high 11 sec cars with traps in low 120's if driven right.

No way I believe that M5 is trapping 115mph with just an exhaust and high flow cats. Sorry.....but I'd have to call B.S., that's C5 Z06 territory right there and I NEVER had trouble with modded M5s in my Z06.

That M5 is indeed supercharged, but something is wrong if it's only trapping 115mph (i.e. toasted clutch, bad tuning etc.).

That car should be trapping more than 120+mph if everything is running properly.
