View Full Version : My old ass E30 vs. my friends civic
mulholland 02-24-2008, 06:42 AM E30 ETA VS. EG6
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!!
seriously though. Yes, a civic, my buddy David has a ricer, god help him. Anyways, I got my new putt putt beater (good condition..but it is an 87 with 245xxx on the odo...so beater) 325, and of course when I'm in any of my faster 2 cars, his car is "broken" or "running funny" or "the hondata is messing up" but any time I'm in something slow his car is running perfect haha. Those are actual, real quotes, not exaggerations or jokes. So I take him to pick up his turbo civic after having the new turbo back exhaust installed. It's rice, but it does dyno 203whp and 151tq or so (whp is accurate, not 100% sure on tq). On the way back on the highway and on the out city limit streets we play around and sadly for his civic, we run about dead even. From a dig it is dead even, but I could have launched much harder, not to start making excuses. I know other threads talk about sti vs. m3 and such, and 60hp advantages blah blah blah, but there really is something to be said about BMW's gearing on their cars. And the great thing about BMW pulling most of its speed from gearing prowess is that adding power and handling upgrades and swapping diffs only makes your car that much quicker. In 2 days I will have my chip in and new vogtland suspension, and he already knows he's screwed. He has decided to get another car to build to compete with my E30 lol. This isn't the most exciting kill thread, as stock my eta runs dead even with him, but I consider it an engineering feat that my stock eta (121hp 167tq I believe, off the showroom floor) with 245xxx miles stays dead even with his 95 civic coupe. BMW engineer kill! Yeah! Anyways, just food for thought guys. Nothing all of you bimmer driver's don't already know though, huh? :redspot

A civic that actually dynos that much would rape a stock ETA

How much beer have you had so far when you wrote this B.S.? Sounds like not enough. Have some more kid!
easymoney 02-24-2008, 12:09 PM I totally agree to ohlins8990 just said. That's what I meant on my post.
bigbeansm3 02-24-2008, 12:13 PM Was he shifting before boost? lol
3two8eye 02-24-2008, 02:07 PM was he in reverse?
jake9685 02-24-2008, 02:21 PM wow. this is the dumbest thread I have read in awhile. I had a 91 318is with a chip and some suspension work done to it and I smoked this guy's I know stock eta. Later that week I ran this kid from my school who has a 91 civic SI hatch with the b16 making 160 at the wheels and he ate me by 2-3 cl's. So I am callg this thread out.
Seph540i 02-24-2008, 04:19 PM Maybe he forgot which was the brake and which was the accelerator.
Zero Cool 02-24-2008, 05:55 PM Are you sure that you did not switch cars after a few races and the one you described is where you were in the civic and him in the e30. Yea, that makes more sense now.
evo connevo 02-24-2008, 06:26 PM Thank God that gearing saved you
evo connevo 02-24-2008, 06:28 PM On a more serious note, his car doesn't dyno over 200whp. If your car has a swap, then maybe this is feasible.

If the civic actually had a turbo...200whp is nothing.
mulholland 02-26-2008, 03:47 AM it's a ricer, it has an ugly little 1.5l d15 dropped in with a mercedes turbo welded on, regardless. it does dyno that, and it did happen. His car is gutted to the fullest and has no reinforcement whatsoever to the body on sprint springs meant for the car stock which would way considerably more, since even the engine is lighter than stock. His car handles worse than any car I have ever driven and this was street racing, and racing along old FM (farm roads) highways that have repeated up and down hill's with plenty of warning 30mph turn etc etc. No lsd plus tall gearing also isn't the greatest thing in the world. Also I keep up on all of my maintenance and such, including having tires in good shape, which he doesn't. Also the short shifter kit on his cars makes it feel like you are rowing a boat. the throw is short and all, but resistance is nasty. My shifter on the other hand is a stock level with weighted knob and I can throw great shifts with no resistance.
screwbiedoo15 02-26-2008, 04:03 AM got any pics of your guys cars? would love to see a mercedes turbo on a civic
Orxan4ik 02-26-2008, 04:57 AM sure u beat the 203whp civic....uhuh... :werd:
:devillook
:nuts

Frogger 02-26-2008, 08:35 AM If light enough, a 200whp Civic would pull like my R at some speeds, and your ETA is in the realm of my first gen miata. Having driven both yesterday, I can say with complete confidence that either this didn't happen, the Civic driver is a complete moron, or it was a race that consisted of little more than a launch.
With as laggy as that Civic could be, I could see this happening through first and maybe second gear. How fast did you get going by the end?
giterdone 02-26-2008, 10:00 AM what is the mercedes kompressor's like? When does it spool up?
Also if this civic is as ghetto as mulholland described, I could understand, if the race was through hilly twisties as later described (probably should've been in the original post). Well I sort of can believe it. He is saying overly tall gearing, with a horrible gear box, no suspension, and what might be a strung out underpowered engine that doesn't make it's boost until the very top of the rev range, and if they were encountering turns, he might not have ever been boosting.
Then this is not a testament to BMW's gearing, it is a lesson on how not to modify your car.

the Mb kompressor is their supercharged motors. the only turbos mb sold were their turbo diesels...if you did win..I'd chalk it up to driver skills *i suspect both are lacking :devillook*, and mods done to civic give it 200hp but its untuned so its not consistant w its power. your eta up against a 200whp civic done correctly and its gutted will destroy you.... think lotus elite pwr to weight ratio for that civic IF ITS DONE CORRECTLY
moberg12 02-26-2008, 01:11 PM Mullholland have you even changed the stock diff out in your eta?

yeah I thought it was just their sc'ed versions. So...how good is the blow dryer off their turbo diesels?
SoulHarvester 02-26-2008, 02:33 PM You can't honestly be blaming his losing on a "short shifter"
moberg12 02-26-2008, 02:37 PM I think the OP got put in timeout, or at least I hope he did. He has been spewing this kinda diarrhea of the mouth in the E30 section for the last couple of weeks. Every thread this guy starts gets locked.

I don't think he did; his user title remains "Member." He may have just gotten a good verbal lashing by a mod.

kompressors are superchargers

if he did, it wasn't from me. :dunno
mulholland 02-27-2008, 03:10 AM None such problems with mods...ps moberg, the reason they get locked is thread jackers like you coming in, just like you did here, and taking things OT and starting trash. Anyways, just because his car put down a peak of 203hp doesn't mean that's steady power at all. It pulls very briefly hard right at redline pretty much, and yeah having a sloppy shifter and making 1+ second slow weak shifts makes your car slow, regardless of numbers. The turbo isn't anything sexy to look at, the setup is hideously welded together, and up until about a week ago his filters were all black with soot and crap. He commonly blames his "Hondata" on his car running like crap, I blame its crappy halfassed build. Although it really does need to be tuned better, because it could be much faster.
