View Full Version : Engine starts then immediately dies
Mike Bonkalski 02-23-2008, 04:06 PM I have an E30 with a S50B32 swap that I completed in the fall. The engine ran fine when I parked the car for the winter.
I went out to the garage to start the car today and it starts, but immediately dies. Same symptoms with the MAF unplugged.
ICV? Fuel filter?
abood//M 02-23-2008, 06:33 PM How many times did you try??
Mike Bonkalski 02-23-2008, 06:39 PM 10-15 times. It fires then dies.
abood//M 02-23-2008, 06:46 PM hmm,
Have you disconnected the battry before parking it ??!
If so, have a look to the battry....
I had that before....
Mike Bonkalski 02-23-2008, 07:41 PM New battery, so I don't think its that.
abood//M 02-23-2008, 07:56 PM If that is O.K
Would you try the hoses that are connected to the intake...check them all.
is there some gas in your car.....kidding
damnboy37 02-23-2008, 09:41 PM How long did you leave it untouched?
Mike Bonkalski 02-23-2008, 09:52 PM I haven't started it since the beginning of December.
JamesM3M5 02-23-2008, 10:06 PM Could be EWS-2 got out of alignment for no reason. When I first put mine in, it started but would die as soon as it fired. Just needed an EWS realignment.
Mike Bonkalski 02-23-2008, 11:27 PM What do I need to do for a re-alignment?
JamesM3M5 02-24-2008, 12:14 AM GT1 or Autologic. You will need a shop that has one of those tools to go into the system and realign the EWS2 system. IF that is your car's problem...
Mike Bonkalski 02-24-2008, 09:54 AM Can I just bring them the DME and the key, or will I have to tow the car over to the shop? If that is the problem of course...

The car will run with the MAF unplugged in the Euro cars no problem, I would try unplugging that and seeing if it runs before you go to the dealer to get an ews alignment. I’ve done enough Euro swaps including my own car, with the batteries out cars, stored, taken apart many times ect... with out an ews ever need to be realigned(unless the dme was changed).
Any chance you messed with the intake and installed the MAF backwards since storing it the would make it start and die right away, try unplugging then go from there with other test's like the fuel system.
Mike Bonkalski 02-24-2008, 04:24 PM I tried unplugging the MAF with similar results.
The arrow points towards the plenum, in the direction of air flow, correct?
I did clean and re-install my ITG filter. I take a look to see if there are any significant vacuum leaks, but everything appears to be fine.
Mike Bonkalski 02-24-2008, 04:39 PM It's fixed.
I started tracing wires and found intermittent 12v to the EWS control module.
It turned out that the nut connecting the 12v power supply was loose. I tightened the nut, and it started and ran fine. It must have been finger tight after I completed the swap and slowly worked it's way loose.
I appreciate the input on my problem, and the support you guys had to offer!!
