Careful you don't end up introducing water to your engine bay when it rains...

Good point on the water... how does (if) Alpina prevent that?

FYI... I was told by an Aerodynamics Engineer ... the hood scoop like the one in the center of the Alpina, was developed by NASA.
I think the hood is definitely hot.

Rod

There is a reason it is called a NACA duct. And it was developed my NACA, not NASA. NASA did not exist yet.

I don't try to drive her in the rain..
There has to be away to prevent any rain/water issue. If that ever gets resolved, I too would be interested.

Ask 8eights...looks like he has something similar.I saw that on his car on the right,,But the more I look at it , the more I see a reflection of a window and not louvers...I could be wrong..Can you chime in 8eights??

Hey Randy,

Koizumi wrote: Alpina Carbon Fiber E31 hoods. I want one--but nobody can buy one unless you have $15k and already own the Alpina to go with it.

Tread72 wrote: its Alpina hood, don't ask how much they cost and you cant buy them unless you own a Alpina B12.

The first hood is made by a company from the UK, I think it was or is 4500.00 USD..

And Tread72, thank you for posting the pics in your other thread..

When I'm done I'm going to write : Paid $350.00 for a perfect hood , cost of punching louvers ???? , Painted for FREE!!!!( cousin paints for Lexus, did my spoiler..the kids awesome!!) PRICELESS!!!!! Lol.. I'm not paying $4500 nor $15k for a hood..I'll be talking a couple of octives higher , if you know what i mean...

do you have a cousin that makes boats so you can ship one over to London?Come on.... All of those Beautiful English hand formed bodies and you can't find someone to punch a few louvers in a hood??? You could probally find someone to make one from scratch...

I've actually talked to a couple guys in the Rod and Custom field about this. When they see the size of those louvers they've balked as it's beyond their machinery's capacity. The water diversion deal is interesting and I too wonder how thats dealt with.

Why not have someone to make one in carbon fibre? most be lots of companys working with carbon fibre in US. I´m intrested in a Alphina B12 hood too. They looks great

Carbon fibre is not cheap - we're still looking into producing one, but the challenge is keeping it under $2k.
For example, the CF sunroof that we've managed to produce sells/will sell for around $650 - how many takers to you think we'd get at that price?

We have a company in the southern part of Swden producing parts for racing cars and only working with corbon fibre. Do a lot of parts for Koeningsegger. Know they do parts for other companys and also for anyone who need parts They have made some cowling parts for my Twin Comanche and as you say it is not cheap. I can ask them for est. price. How much do you think people are willing to pay for a hood? How many are intrested in this? Think that the more we order the cheaper it will be.

why would you be worried about water getting under the hood? it gets wet under there when it rains anyway......

aside from water dripping directly onto something electric, in which case a simple cover would solve that problem.....

tx, could you also make the water that comes in, fill up my washer reservoirs?

Yup! Alpina did not do anything for the Louvers. The Louvers are positioned at a place where a little rain won't hurt anything. Also at speeds the louvers are designed to pull the air out from the engine bay and keep the bay cooler. Thus the water drops will be blown away as the car is moving.

For the NACA duct, Alpina cut a Oval hole on the engine acoustic cover and used a small plastic tray under in to keep the fuel rail cooler. The oval hole matches up with the bottom of the NACA duct. Thus any water coming in through is channeled through that hole and comes out at the back of the engine. If you keep your electrical wiring properly covered like the pictures below, there should not be any issue.
