CPS - Common problem.
Quick fix

O2 Sensor - Regular maintenance
Also a quick fix - Bank 1 Sensor 1 is passenger side pre-cat.

Precat- before the cat. As I said in your other post, replace the CPS first then have your codes checked at Advanced Auto or Autozone before buying o2 sensor. If one precat o2 sensor is bad you're better off just replacing both of them. I would hold off on the o2 sensors until after I replaced the CPS.

Lastly, get the CPS from the dealer. It is slightly more than Autohaus, yet you won't be waiting for it in the mail. Go and get it at any dealer, go home and within ten minutes you're driving.:buttrock

Thanks likedatyall. Unfortunately there is not Advance Auto or Autozone, in where I live in Canada. The closest dealer is almost 5 hours away.
I borrowed a code reader from a local garage. It was a generic one.

Your pre cat sensor is probaby registering a fault because you have been starting the car and it has been dying, with raw unburnt fuel entering the exhaust system. Get the CPS first, start the car and get it running correctly, and most probably, the O2 sensor fault will go away.

Thanks Jake. I just talked to one dealership( parts) and they have what they call a camshaft speed sensor. What came on my code reader was camshaft position sensor. So I am going to call another dealership, this time the Service Department as I do not want to order the wrong stuff.

They said it is the same but there are two sensors and they do not know which side it is. Should I do both or just do the passenger side and then see how it goes?

I am trying to think which is bank one on these cars. Give me a minute to look it up.

Okay, best I can figure out (from the M5 forum) bank 2 is the driver's side. Make sure you get the cam position sensor...you should be able to find the part number on www.realoem.com These cars have cam position sensors, crankshaft position sensore, camshaft speed sensors, so be sure when you buy. Installation is fairly straight forward.

Another tip, on this forum you can do a search, using terms like cam position sensor, or camshaft position sensor and you will get lots of hits because it is a common malfunction. Be sure that you talk to the parts person at the dealership, or someone knowledgeable at www.autohousaz.com or even www.bavauto.com I would put my money on Bavauto (but that's just me). You are so far away from anything that it's going to be difficult. No need to buy two if you know which one is the culprit.

Is there just one cam position sensor? I spoke to the Service Manager at a BMW dealership and he told me that it is called camshaft position sensor but some people call it camshaft speed sensor and he is sure that if its stalling then it is the camshaft position sensor. I forgot to ask him if there are two or just one.

If your manufacture date is before 9/98 you only have one CPS, after that two. If you can't figure out your manufacture date go to realoem.com, enter the last 7 digits of your VIN, navigate to 'Engine,' then 'Engine Housing,' and then click on the 'Upper Timing Case' figures. There are two of these, but only one of them will show part numbers for your car. It will show the part number for your CPS ('Camshaft Speed Sensor') and also tell you how many your car has in the 'Qty' column.

Look on the pillar behind the driver's seat and it will provide the date of manufacture. Everything else is valid and good information to anyone looking at www.realoem.com

I have one CPS. Why do they say(give a number) use with position sensor O ring? Does it come with the O ring, or I would have to buy it separately?

Thanks

Be on the safe side, buy the 'O' ring as well. Every site I have been on lists the 'O' ring separate.
