dcvee 02-21-2008, 02:53 PM How much lighter is the aluminum trailer over the steel one?
Thanks
Don
avusm3 02-24-2008, 11:58 AM Don -
It really depends on which specific trailers you are talking about. I've seen aluminum ones range from 800 - 1400lbs, and steel ones range from 1200 - 1700lbs. If you are looking for a light one, then Trailex makes the lightest ones I've seen. My current one (CT-7541) is around 900lbs and is plenty big enough for an E36, and my first one was around 780lbs (it was only barely big enough to do the job.)

yeah, kinda what I'm looking for John is one that's barely big enough to do the job. But I'm finding that definition in aluminum is about the same weight in steel! Now there are some sacrifices...like a solid 1 piece deck vs a ramp style trailer. But the weights are surprisingly close.
Have to check out Trailex....thanks!
sorry for the diversion OP.

Iverson jr 02-24-2008, 01:15 PM Just helping reinforce your plan to tow with your X5. I have an H&H open pit steel that weighs 1700# and an M3 that weighs 2500 towed behind a 4.8is. Works well but wouldn't want much more weight back there.
///Maniac 02-24-2008, 01:27 PM Yes, which is why I'm searching for a LIGHT trailex. If I can find a 1000# trailer, throw on 500# of stuff, and a 2800# car, I'm at ~4500#. Tow rating on a 4.4 is 6000# but why push it.
I've heard the X5 is very smooth towing.
Thanks for the thumbs up.

///Maniac 03-02-2008, 01:58 PM That one is approaching the cost of a new Trailex, but I'm having trouble finding used..
Who knows..
The whole damn sport is a budget buster!

328ischef 03-02-2008, 08:04 PM ive happily towed many miles in a 4.4 X5. Touaregs also do well, I especially like the V10 twin turbo diesel
///M3Matt 03-02-2008, 09:21 PM we have a brand new (unassembled) tire rack from trailex for sale if you find a trailer w/o a rack :)

rlabair 04-27-2008, 11:35 PM Have you checked out the Featherlites? A couple of guys in our club purchased them and are extremely happy with them. One tows his M3 with his X5. Good luck.

PDWebb 05-24-2008, 07:22 AM In the back of the Roundel there is an ad for a place up in KY, www dot trailerworld dot com. I don't have any experience with these yet, but it looks like they make a couple nice aluminum options. I asked what their 15' trailer weighs, the guy said about 900lbs.
Take a look at the customer photos, there is an e30 on their 14' being pulled by an old bimmer wagon.
