View Full Version : 99 M3 vs. new Porsche Carrera S
LeMansGTS 02-20-2008, 01:40 AM Although there was never a moment where we lined up to race, I got to see how my car stacks up against something decent. Several times, when this Carrera saw an opening on the freeway, he downshifted and took off from about 70 mph. In third gear, I am runnning at 5500 rpm or so, right in the powerband.
Since the Porsche got headstarts after every lane change, he always had an advantage, but I reeled him in rather easily and sat on his back bumper, and found myself backing off the throttle. I even bounced off the limiter in third before shifting into 4th. So all in all, from about 70-110 I had no problem chasing down a new 911 Carrera S, and could have easily passed him if I wanted. The car appeared stock.
This all happened in Tijuana.
CVGTURBO86 02-20-2008, 05:32 AM Are you FI?

Tijuana Mexico????? Dude, be careful. I got pulled over there for going 55kph in a 45kph zone. Those cops will take your car. My cop asked me to follow him back to the station, for what I don't know, then he changed his mind and let me go. Good runs, Mr Porche was probably wondering why he spent all that money on that day. If there is a Tijuana Texas please ignore the first part.

Nicely done. Still waiting to get a run at one of those. I have one I see all summer on Rt 5 near the quads... If I can get next to him it should be a good time.
LeMansGTS 02-20-2008, 11:11 AM yes, my car has FI (364 whp)

yes, my car has FI (364 whp)
Nice kill...I messed with one a few months back (don't know the year), but I was in front and he couldn't keep up.

Sarcasm my friend....
I know someone who just got a 997 4S about a month ago. I've not been impressed, but he's still learning the car. He asked me what I thought of the acceleration, and I lied and said it was great. Didn't want to burst his bubble. I have not driven it. You guys don't need that much power to pull non turbo 911s.

Yup, they're only roughly the same speed as an e46 m3, if not slightly faster...really slow, right?
sausrigging 02-20-2008, 02:12 PM 997 4s are a good amount faster than a e46m3.

DRIVER kill, don't get too excited, stock 997 Carrera S does a quarter miles in mid 12's. He was toying with you or scared to take his new car to the limits.

Ummm the OP makes 364whp. I know how fast 997s can be. A relative of mine owns an 07 with optional sport exhaust and gt3 aero package. Its an insane car. I have also driven e36 m3's with about the same amount of power the OP has, and FI e36 m3's making nearly 37owhp are faster then the 997s(which are rated alittle more then that a the crank).:cool

I dont think the 4s's are. The standard 997s is for sure.

No, I am pretty sure the guy was on it. I have plenty of power to pull on one. Don't they only make 355 crank hp?
I have 364whp with a 8.5# Flywheel and UUC Cerametallic clutch.

Yes but he can actually put that power to the ground. I bet you run mid 13s spinning through 3rd, as i've seen many a turbo M3 go. Even if you did win, he still drove home in a Pcar.

Drag radials, and if you drive home with your tail between your legs does it really matter what your driving? Thats like justifying a loss by saying "well, i have heated seats" as ive seen some members attempt to do.
GG///M3 02-20-2008, 08:55 PM The things some are not getting is this was on a highway run. The e36 m3 that the OP has would ass rape a 997s until it ran out of gear......
oldMcR 02-20-2008, 09:05 PM most P-Car drivers in new Porsches lack the skill and intestinal fortitude to run their cars out to full potential. any track day will prove my point. not to mention a 997S goes for about 65 used these days, so they might have some sense as to not highway race.
however if the OP is in fact planting 365 at the wheels, sure. no contest.

An '08 Carrera S only makes 355 at the crank. The fact that OP has 364 at the wheels makes it a no contest.

This is true, but the same could be said for most people driving cars with substantial handling capabilities.

is there an echo in here?
364hp to the wheels is putting the OP's car in the C5 Z06's range. and as such against a 997S on the track it is a drivers race. on the interstate in a straight line, the hp of the M3 might be a deciding factor.

No. My car is not nearly powerful enough to spin the tires at 70-80 mph. So that was not a factor.

a properly tweaked miata has handling capabilities. we are talking ponies here my friend. but yes, most street driven high hp cars are piloted by individuals with little or no high performance drivers education, and as such don't feel the need to learn to drive their cars at the limit.
street racing is for pussies, plain truth. playing with a P-Car on the interstate, sure sounds like fun.

This is true, however my point of putting more emphasis on handling vs high hp comes from my bias of driving a rustang. While 300 crank hp to some does not qualify as high hp, to others it's enough. You could also throw in the GT500 too if 500 hp fits the bill. But as most everyone on this forum will agree, the mustang is not a handler no matter how much improved in current form. There are several high po cars that aren't light on their feet but they are mostly from this side of the pond, but you could throw in a couple of previous gen Merc's and Audi's that would fit that description too. So limiting the generalization to Vette, Viper, P cars, M cars, italians, etc. may be more relavant.

NASA the land of mutangs. fox body heaven.
S8ER01Z 02-21-2008, 09:47 AM Wow..I don't get how this is confusing anyone...OP has more power to the tires than the Porsche... From a roll there is little reason why the porsche should win unless we are talking a car with mustang aerodynamics and a very high speed run.

+1
...i'm making in the neighborhood of 400whp, running OEM tire sizes (255's out back - and they're STREET tires, not drag radials), and i have negligible traction problems even from a standing launch. can i chirp the tires going into 3rd? sure, but i can't come close to spinning them all the way through 3rd gear. and so i can't see the OP having traction problems beyond 2nd gear either.
also, i'm not sure what makes you think that the difference between the Porsche's 300whp and the OP's 364whp is enough to go from perfect traction to "spinning through 3rd" (even despite any difference in tire sizes). the turbo M3's we see spinning effortlessly through 3rd gear have what we call "crazy power," and that's quite a ways beyond the 364whp mark.
nice kill OP :buttrock
