Just finished cleaning out the garage so I decided to go on a drive to help 'relax'. Well I almost made it home (~3 miles) when a 330 I had previously passed decided he wanted to play. Guy didn't want to line up..kept on taking off, forcing me to catch up and pass him. Eventually we caught a light...

Rolled down the window at his request..he wanted to go. Light turns green, I launch at a very moderate 2500. I immediately jump out and by the end of first hes at my rear bumper. Second gear he falls back 3-4cl. Shut it down at 70mph. Car was definitely a manual so hmm?

that would have been great. now he probably thinks it was an M3 that stomped him.

OP,

Your car looks sick. Those black SSR rims are sweet! Impressive mod list. I wouldn't expect you would have any trouble with a 330ci.

E46 330ci with an E36 M3 is a pretty close call, with the M3 having the advantage of course...but still, stock for stock, both stick, in a street race, it's really a drivers race. Your car on the other hand, is a little different story... :) Nice kill!

Thats why I was expecting a "bit" more. I beat m3s but not the way I slaughtered this thing.

i raced my buddies manual 330ci one time and i destroyed him. had at least 2 bus lengths by the time i switched to 4th. but i make a bit more at the wheels than he makes at the crank.

I raced my friend who drives an E46 M3 stick when I had my 330ci stick. I beat him in a race off the line...rolling, etc. He had no idea what gear to be in, how to launch, etc. I raced a kid who knew how to drive an E46 M3 and he killed me so bad, it wan't even funny.

What I'm trying to say is, in a street race, there are so many factors, you just never know. People can mis-shift, not launch right, etc. The driver plays a major role, and mistakes can cost the race, even if the other car is supposed to be faster.

A Zhp 330 and e36 M3 are close, but e36 M3 and regular 330 not so much.

Explain to me the real differences between a 330 and a ZHP. Talking performance wise here.

Engine is tuned for 10 hp more from the factory, so 235 vs. the standard 225. Shorter final drive ratio as well. Not much other than that.

A friend of mine has one but I know he won't run. Total puss. I can't convince him my car isn't an m3. Doesn't believe its just a 328. GG

Actually I don't care. My teenager street racing days are over. I had a modified 328is before this car. Now that I'm out of college and have a good paying job, it's time to grow up. I payed almost 30k for my pristine Zhp. It's plenty fast enough for me.

If I cared about street racing and wanted to smoke you, I easily could of bought a 01-03 e46 M3 for what I payed for my zhp. I went the smart route though because I have a ton of warranty left on my car. Plus, I have all the M goodies on the exterior and the interior anyways.

I think it can go either way really. Its all about what makes one happy. With the money I've put in my car I could probably have bought an e46 m3 or 330 zhp (cringes:()

I drive a 97' Z28... so I'm not used to racing cars with soda bottle displacement like you. Get a car with a real engine and maybe we can race. I also have a corolla, which might be up to your speed, or a little faster.

A Zhp 330 and e36 M3 are close, but e36 M3 and regular 330 not so much.

How does 10 HP make that much difference? Does the 6 spd short shifter help matters any?

I Just got a my regular 330Ci and I would love to test it out against an e36 M3, not saying I'd win or anything, I would just like to see first hand how the cars stack up against each other.

Yea I finally realized that there will always be faster cars (unless I get a bugatti) and I can't really afford to buy and then maintain an e46 M3, so I'm perfectly content for now with my 3 day old 330Ci, the thing feels like a beast compared to my previous 318i.

And to the guy with the 328iS, yes your car is sick, but don't go getting too egotistical because I'm sure a 330 could be modded in a similiar fashion and then i doubt you'd be putting bus lenghts on it.

I had a ZHP and it seemed slow compared to my M3, and the gear ratios are very poorly spaced -as Bimmer magazine also found out. The close ratio gearbox is part of the package, as are cams, software, exhaust, diff, springs, shocks and bushings, quicker steering ratio. I think the low end torque of the US spec M3 (325/328 are the same) and lighter weight makes them more raw, so to speak. Kinda like the Honda S2000 is supposed to be fast, but you have to drive it like you hate it (no problem). Otherwise it is a dog, and in WV the turns aren't always long enough to wind anything out. I had a college buddy w/ a new E46 M3, he took me for a ride and got beat by a Z3 2.8 from a stoplight(E30 based- M50 engine Z3). By the time he got on it, the race was over. Unless you can do 70-120mph without worrying about tickets, the E36 is WAY more fun. I had a ZX-7R Ninja (11,500 redline) and it was the same, my buddy's lighter, street tuned ZX6 (tuned for more low/mid range) was faster around here. Unless we were on a four lane, or a sweeping country road, I couldn't open it up. I'd take a boosted E36 M3 over a boosted E46 M3, any day, for the same reason.
