uhh... i did a bonehead thing yesterday.

anyway, does anybody know of a place that refinishes curb-rashed rims? Note: the rim part is polished & cleared, not silver painted, so this may add to the dilemma... :az:

Freddy's in Kakaako. I think they were on Ilaniwai.

Yup, Freddy's off Ward Ave. He repaired 2 of my bent wheels. Turn around time was about 3 days for each wheel. I'm not sure if he (Clyde) can repair the polished part. Give him a try. He has some crackhead business hours. 5pm to 1am. His number is 596-8315.

BTW, is your car a Techno Violet M3 with SSR GT3's?

thanks for the info, i'll try giving them a call or even stop by to show them the damage.

ya, i'm purple w/ gt3, mine is daytona violet, but i can't tell the difference between techno & daytona because i've never seen them side by side. i think one is more indigo-violet, and one is more barney-violet. i think i'm barney. :stickoutt

i hope u didn't catch me doing anything bad. :embarrasm

Actually, I've seen you on the freeway, townbound last Saturday.

Bob,

You better call BMW as I hear there is a recall on your car, something about a loose nut behind the wheel! :biglaughb

Sorry to hear about the wheel Bob. Please update if you get good results from Freddy's. I haven't damaged a wheel yet (knock on wood) but it would be good to know that he can do good work.

I think I've seen your car at Millilani Costco before. Nice!

Bob,
Sorry about your rims. I've had Clyde fix the curb rash on a couple of my rims from a previous car. He did a wonderful job. I had 3 piece Work Equip's, the lip was polished w/ clearcoat, and the flat edge was like a machine finish w/ clearcoat. What he does is put the wheel on a lathe and shaves down the flat edge of the entire lip until the curb rash is gone. If the curb rash is really bad and deep, there might have to be some spot welding to fill in those areas before it goes on the lathe (more $$$, not sure how much). Think I paid about $75 per rim for the lathe job. Only thing is that the part that's refinished will be unfinished and no longer clearcoated, but it did not take that much more care and attention on my part.

Hi, thanks for the responses.

Sorry to keep everybody in suspense. RE: Clyde's lathe--I had feared something like that--the refinished surface would be left un-cleared. I've had numerous polished aluminum rims w/o clearcoat (motorycles), with varying degrees of commitment to keep them nice.

My curb rash truly isn't very bad, but I am very anal (i.e., it's small, but I know it's there!). I do have other options, as this is a 3-piece wheel, and may even opt for a new lip (although the twelve billion rivets do scare me--can you say precise torque and order of tightening in the star pattern with 12 billion rivets  ). I may just wait and see how many of my friends actually notice, and then perhaps put off correction until I have to get new tires. I may use the rashed wheel as a spare and get a new wheel (woohoo a matching spare :) )

Bob,

I'm sure those rims look pretty bad. The best thing to do is buy an entire new set of rims and try and sell your old ones for whatever you can get. You may have to fire sale them as who would want damaged rims? ;)

I'll give you $500 for the set. :)

Be careful, you may get what you wish for! I guess you don't have too much knowledge of 750s. There are BMW that are maintenance nightmares and money pits, the E32 750il and the E30 M3.
