View Full Version : missfire and engine light under acceleration
neoman 02-19-2008, 03:30 PM hey guys my 4.4 is missfiring under acceleration while cruising she seems fine but when i change down to 3rd or 4th and put the show down she starts to do it and the engine light flicks on and off 10 times and then goes out. i am thinking coilpack but could it be anything else. my traction control light is on too as well as the abs light and brakes light(both yellow) this i know could be the dsc unit or wheel speed sensors. also i noticed that i have just lost some pixels on the lettering on my instrument cluster this evening. i only started driving her today. i'm well pissed.
neoman 02-19-2008, 04:54 PM it idles fine also but seems to misfire if i rev it but only at low rpm while stationary.
lowell 02-19-2008, 05:12 PM What do the plugs and intake/valve cover gaskets look like?
neoman 02-19-2008, 06:01 PM will check tomorrow evening after work, this just happened tonight and it's too latre now and i am alone with my kids so i ain't goin out lol. it has only 60k miles done but was parked for a long time. one thing to note though is that a guy where i collected her after transit jumped it woith a 24v truck jumper pack and blew out the alternator. i got a new one but would this have caused further damage?. i disconnected the battery and the lights in the dash are now gone out but will return after a few mins. the missfire is gone now while revving in a stationary position but she is cold again.
Tennessee740il 02-19-2008, 08:09 PM I had misfire problems on my 97 740il, The check engine light would blink then stay on after I attempted to go Wide open throttle. End up being my catalytic converters. Suprised me. Was causing my car to choke.
crewdog843 02-19-2008, 10:39 PM If your traction control light is on, your car thinks that you are skidding and will shut down your throttle. Hope you didn't fry your electronics with the 24 volt jump.

The guy from the transit company jumped it with a 24v? How many car out there actually use 24 volts? You should give the transit company a call if you find out that they did fry your electronics, that's just careless to use a 24v pack on a 12v car.
neoman 02-20-2008, 03:06 PM when you say fryed my electronics how far do you think it would go damage wise? the three lights staying on is the ignition switch or wheel speed sensors, or dsc unit i have read. the lights are gone when i start her up after she cools down but come back on after a while.
i overtook a car on the way home and gave her full throttle. afterwards she was misfiring on idle and in slow traffic. i pulled over turned her off then on again straight away and the missfire was gone again at idle and back only under quick acceleration.
i'm confused. if it was a coil or plug wouldn't it always missfire?
and if it is a cat why would she missfire at idle after i overtook that car and then go away again after i restarted the car. i will be able to get her on a diagnistics machine tomorrow night so i will get codes hopefully.

did you get new cats or is there a way of cleaning them?
neoman 02-22-2008, 06:14 PM drove the car today with the diagnostics hand held plugged in and the lead running to the passenger side seat, found that the right front wheel speed sensor was not reading speed got out fiddled with the wire and he presto lights went out. the misfire turns out was 2 coilpacks not working 100%. i went around each one unplugging them the first 3 made the misfire worse so plugged them on again. then the right bank bulkhead side coilpack(from incar view) when unplugged made no differance to the misfire hence proving it faulty. also the left side farthest one from the bulkhead proved to be faulty also. Has anyone ever seen two coils go at the same time? anyway i need to get two new coils and thats her sorted hopefully. will also give her new plugs just to be on the safe side. happy days
crewdog843 02-22-2008, 11:05 PM Did you check to see if you have oil in the well between the coil boot, plug, and engine?
If your valve cover gaskets are loose and allow oil to seep into the plug wells, you will get misfires, and I have seen oil so deep in the well that it went up the boot about an inch.
Check it...you can get it out with absorbent materials then pull and dry the plug, but eventually you will have to tighten the valve cover gaskets/replace the gasket anyway. If you do pull the plug, expect the car to smoke for a short period of time as the oil inside the cylinder is burnt off.

neoman 02-23-2008, 07:54 AM i'll check now. thanks
neoman 02-24-2008, 02:56 PM plug wells are dry.
i decided to switch two coil packs to be sure they were the problem. i moved the problem coil pack further up the line and plugged them all in again. if a pack was the problem then the missfire would have followed it while engine was running but it didn't it got worse proving that the coilpack i switched further along was in fact working fine. i pulled the plug off the coil pack that i moved back to where i thought the problem was. and when i unplugged that one to test it made no differance which all points to plugs. if coils were the problem then the miss should have followed the coil when i moved it.. i have never seen two plus to fail though so i begining to worry that my problems could be bigger
neoman 02-25-2008, 02:09 PM problem solved today after ruling out coilpacks i decided to buy new ngk plugs. I replaced them all and no oil was present in the plug wells. but the plugs i took out were split fire ones which were totally wrong. i popped in the new ones fired her up and seh is now 100% again thank god. nice to have the v8 roar back through my hamman exhaust with no misfire.
