I'd recommend renting a Miata and not a Mustang.

There are five speed Miatas available for rent somewhere on this island (they've made appearances at autox before).

Also I recall the Mustang V6 that developed severe rod knock at a BMWCCA event a few years ago. Wow, that was a long time ago. I must be getting old. :az:

Reid,

Geez.. I had no clue a Miata was available for rent. Any idea where? We are flying in early (7:30AM is early!) Saturday.

Thanks for suggestion and help!

Awww, come on Reid. It'll bring back memories! Wasn't that the day you were blowing some smoke, too?

Scott, if your gf is shooting, should I wear kevlar?:biglaughb I'll check and see if I can find a place to rent you a Miata.

Yup, the yellow car did not have a baffled oil pan back then.

I REALLY need to sign up for this event.

Is there some way I can order it online? :stickoutt

Reid, I sent it to your mom's e-mail. Have her print it out for you. Read the app carefully as you must PAY by a certain day for the event.

Scott, one of the guys rented a Miata a couple years ago so I'll check with him. If not available, go for the Mustang.

Exactly how are you getting all these cars down to HRP?
You had better at least run a few laps if you are bringing multiple cars!

I tell you what...I'll run one of them for you and leave the Coupe at home safely tucked in in the garage :)

I need to find the entry form so I can mail you a check tommorrow...

The Beastmaster
07-19-2003, 12:56 AM
E-mail me at bokubo@hawaii.rr.com and I'll send you the app. As for the cars, Leilani is shuttling the 6er down to the track. I'll be cruising in style in the aubergine Dinan'd 540i.

7 days and counting!

thrlls
07-20-2003, 02:42 AM
Ahhh you got it!
Way to go Barney...I mean Brian. Now take it easy on us with that purple beast.
It was mentioned on the news last night, that there may be some bad weather on Saturday....we can't have any of that or IslandS52 and I will need to clean our wheel wells at the end of the day..lol

Beastmaster - isn't there a place in y-kiki where you can rent Ferraris, Vipers, Lambos and other slow moving vehicles????
And since I ran my car last year, I'll make the sacrafice this year, and leave my car in the garage, and drive Barney to the track for you!

IslandS52 - you gottah bring out that bad coupe of yours, never mind thinking of keeping it in the garage. Let them horses run free, so you can test your new brake pads....he he

7 more days:checkered

Now we're down to 6 Days!

Some friendly advice to participants:

1. Wear light colored cotton clothes
2. Use sunscreen
3. Drink lots of water to hydrate yourself
4. Bring a hat. Preferably a wide brimmed one. Baseball caps won't do much.

thrlls
07-20-2003, 08:55 PM
5. Dark glasses (like no one will do this already...sheeesh)
6. Helmet if you have one, can also get one at the track, if using one from the track you might want to bring some Lysol disinfectant spray
7. Get your car tech'd if you did not do it yet
8. Bring the car that was tech'd...and your driver's license
9. Get a good night sleep, you will need it
10. Have a good attitude to have fun, be safe, and learn something
11. Be sure you have enough gas in your car, or bring some in a gas can. There is a gas station in Kapolei, but who wants to leave!

The Beastmaster

Barney could use new rims, but it would take away from the sleeper look. I could try and find a nice set of BBS rims, but they are hard to clean.

07-21-2003, 05:08 AM
Looks good, Bryan!

What's under that hood?

The Beastmaster
07-21-2003, 06:00 AM
She's stock. ;) Well from what the BMW of Honolulu guys tell me it has lots of Dinan stuff.

CAI
Throttle body
AFM
exhaust
3.15 rear diff
Stage 3 engine software
tranny software

thrlls
07-21-2003, 11:57 AM
Yeah, stock Dinan! Sleeper is good.
I was thinking of giving my car the sleeper look, but the exhaust would give it away.

Nice!

is it a 540, 528 or 530? Barney really needs a set of new shoes. How about mesh sport pkg wheels? I think these are sexy (but I'm weird that way)

The Beastmaster

Yep, those are the rims I was thinking of, or M5 replicas. As for Barney, he's a 540ia.

The Beastmaster

Rules of the road for the Aloha 500!

1. Study the packet to know what each flag means. Pay attention to the flags!
2. Study the packet to know about apexes, trail braking, weight transfer...
3. Get lots of rest the night before, NO ALCOHOL!
4. Start drinking lots of water two days prior to the event
5. Wear light colored cotton clothes and sunscreen. A big floppy hat is good, too.
6. Water and food will be provided. Breakfast is muffins, croissants, canned juice and iced coffee. Lunch will be hamburgers, gardenburgers for the Vegans, and hot dogs. Sort of like an All American picnic lunch.
7. Be prepared mentally for the event with the proper attitude and get there by 7 am, 7:30 at the latest. If you think you are fast, you are not. There are lots of us out there that can run your car harder and faster. This is a school, NOT a race.
8. Read the track packet you will be given that morning and LISTEN to instructions
9. Listen and obey your instructor
10. No hotdogging as your instructor will reel you in
11. If you are called in, it is to calm you down and let you take a breather. It is not punitive. Instead it is time to think about what mistake you made and how not to do it again. We are only doing this for the safety of all concerned parties. If you do not listen, I will have no problem pulling you off the track for the session or for the entire day. That also goes for other events. Let's keep it safe out there!
12. No timing allowed. If I see that going on, I will ask you to stop it. Timing laps can endanger our insurance policy as well as yours if there is an accident as this is considered a school and NOT a race.
13. Think of me as a Marine drill instructor. What I say, goes. Also, I will not let one person hold up the entire run group. If you are late or your car is not tech'd, too bad. The group goes and you will have to sit out the session or have an abbreviated session. Don't think I'll do it? Ask some of the instructors about my run in with a news reporter and his cameraman!
14. Be safe, LISTEN and have fun

Bryan,

As our flight isn't arriving until 7:35 AM, I'm guessing we won't be at the track until... what. 8:30? I know it's closed but you have times to open the gate for people to exit and enter....

Are those times scheduled or how does that work?

I'd love to be there first thing in the morning, but we're working until after the last flight Friday night.:dunno

Whateva, it will be good!

It'll be tight! Just get your butt on over. Since you will be at the Car Control Clinic, it shouldn't interfere with on-track activities. However, you may have to rush as the CCC starts @ 8:40 am!

MauiM3Mania

I may have missed it... which entrance should we use?

I have the track map, and think I know to turn left from the airport :95.

The Beastmaster
07-25-2003, 03:19 PM
Use the entrance for the Hawaii Int'l Racing School which is on Malakole. In other words, drive PAST the race track and make a left turn at the traffice light. That is Malakole. You'll see the entrance to HIRS on your left. You can't miss it! If you take a right, you'll be heading to Barber's Point deep draft harbor.

Thanks for a great and "eventful" Aloha 500. Although it did not go as planned due to the weather, I was still very happy I got to run the morning sessions and I was very impressed with the way the Coupe handled on the track. Thanks again to Beastmaster, Owen and all the instructors for all the hard work. It was great to meet MauiM3Mania and of course see the usual BFC/BMWCCA crew.

What happened to Gene V, Reid and DesmoBob? And where did Momochrome diappear to? We better see all of you at next years' spring fling!

Thanks Byran and Owen for a great event. After Mike said they wouldn't allow us to run the long course in the afternoon, I decided to go home and dry off my bebadeez. Please tell me you guys didn't run the long course.

John, just pm me and I will hook up with you and give you my in-car video tape. It's really shitty though, after Andy and I switch places during the first heat, the stupid camera mount shifts and all you see is 25 minutes of the back of my fat head. The second heat is only about 5 laps, but then you get to see some drama in the sweeper. Well, maybe just the aftermath of said drama.

Thrills, yeah now I have dove BROWN interior.

Mahalos to Bryan, Owen, Chris, Steve, John G., Jack, Bob H.. and all those guys in the yellow shirts and all the corner workers! I was overwhelmed... do I photograph, or get into that red (pos) Mustang and try to absorb all that was happening?

I realized I'm a crappy driver with lots to learn! I was probably better off in the red car than I would've been in the M3.

Kudos to the folks behind the gas grill too. :)

I'm ready for another... so when is it, Bryan?

Give me a day or two and I'll be getting a website loaded. I began editing last night before I fell asleep. Between what Teruko shot and my stuff, we should have 400-500 presentable images. Sorry dial-ups!

We slept in late, and decided to check out the Arizona and such... neither of us had been to any of the "sites".

The Arizona had a three year wait, plus "no camera bags", so we exited. Took a wrong turn and ended up at the Naval base. They threw us out. Took another wrong turn and ended up at Hickman and they asked, "WTH are you doing here??".

We figured someone was telling us to go, so we booked to the airport and got on an earlier flight... no time to discuss the alignment issue with Hertz. :az:

Well I got home with enough time to shower and go to my M-inlaws house for my B-inlaw's birthday. Drank some wine had some food, drrank some morre wine, eight a litil mor, drunnk sum ore whine, anddddddddddd.

On Sunday morning it was rise an shine at 05:00 hours. It took me almost all day to change the DARK brown interior color to the original TAN interior color. I even had some twiggs and things in my car...good grief, lift my foot a little and wham, going for a spin. I'm just glad it wasn't at the sweeper like that poor wahine did..bummers. My fender wells are now "Spank'n".

Scott - Nice pic of the coupe! Bummer you didn't get to do some touring of O'ahu. The weather didn't help out either. Hopefully your next visit will be more rewarding.

IslandS52 your wheels on the passenger side are almost off the ground. Way to go, you look awesome dude! Nancy didn't think that was you until I pointed out those b-u-tful wheels. The pic looks like you were doing the grid circle ride.

Beastmaster - Since it doesn't look like there will be a president next year, you might as well do a car control clinic in October. Maybe have a little drag racing going on also. IslandS52 seemed to be interested in that. And I wouldn't mine having a try at it. I never done that b4. I just hope it's not contagious. And on the return road have a small autoX going. Or we could just do Go - Carting, I missed the last one.

IslandS52 is the next President as I did the "no backs" tag on him!

We do need to do something in the future. What about your island drive? We should also try something for Oktoberfest. As thrlls will be the next VP, perhaps he should start planning more events!

I've been thinking about a car control clinic at the latter part of this year, but must work out logistics (i.e. co$ts).

IslandS62
07-29-2003, 03:53 AM
Drag racing would be pretty cool, but I am not sure how many participants we would have. We would have to combine it with something else.

I am still thinkin' clean car contest/concours/picnic day for October but its not up to me! An island drive would be OK too, but its no fun when everyone is split up IMO.

I don't think I can be president next year. I think my membership renewal might get "lost" in the mail :)

Sorry for the delay, but I'm about to post a PS photogallery of the shots we got at the Aloha 500.

I've created the thing, but the images might be a bit big for some monitors.

Before it goes up, could you guys tell me what monitor res (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc) you use?

If need be, I can resize the images so that you don't have to scroll around to see the entire image.

Assuming you did swaybars with your suspension, and that you had your swaybar mounts reinforced...if so, who did the work?

I just bought a set from GC and am looking for someone to do the welding.

Hi John,

I was ready to upload it with images at 1024 wide, but noticed the entire thing was approaching 78Mb.

I am resizing now to 800px wide and that should keep it under 40Mb! (maybe I shoulda done a harder edit)

I welded my rear swaybar reinforcements in place, then sprayed them with some paint to prevent rust.

I am using the Turner reinforcements, what do the GC reinforcements look like?

Great shots by the way! I know how hard it is to get great angles while staying out of way and not getting plaowed by speeding cars. I would love to get a couple of high quality prints sent to me. Can you PM or post some costs? Or can I buy a CD of the images of my car in hi-res?

Thanks!

The GC reinforcements are 1x4 inch steel flat stock 1/8 inch thick, the ends are cut parallel to one another at a 45 degree angle and have a slight bend in them.

The GC mounting instructions are a little vague, and searches on bf.c have produced what appears to be two or three different mounting methods.

Going to have them welded up at Sonic on Tuesday after work, we should be able to figure out how they attach after we get the car in the air...would be nice if to could see a welded on set in person ahead of time... :D

Hey John, sorry for the delay, we've been swamped this past week.

I know who you are... :) I was talking with an instructor at the fence as well, a tall slender haole. Just wondering who he was.

Far as prints/files, I could convert the files to JPG for you, but can't guarantee color/density balance for whoever would print it for you. They will still be LARGE.

I'd prefer to get real prints made from high rez uncompressed files. I'd like to be able afford a new set of rims and tires, but wouldn't charge *that* much. :) Really!

Shoot me an e-mail and let me know what you're interested in seeing when it's all said and done and we can figure the easiest way to get there.

If anyone else is interested, let me know. I'd prefer to do the whole thing at once to save time... I'm not operating on Maui time these days!

I am leaving for Maui on Sunday morning and will, hopefully, be meeting with MauiM3Mania for dinner. I am going to be ordering some prints from last year's Aloha 500, and if they are ready, carry them back with me.

Scott's A500 website is still up, so if any of you Honolulu guys want me to bring back some prints for you, please review the site and give the image #s to Scott or myself so we can get them ordered up.

Looking at thee again, all I can say is great work... again!!

http://www.hughesphoto.net/aloha500/

We will definitely have to fly Scott and Teruko over again for this years' A500 if he is willing to come, and IF we have an Aloha 500. (I hope we have the $$$!!!)

John,

We definetly would like to be at this years A500.... hope the date is open on our end! We wanted to do the Spring Fling, but we had booked jobs previously.

LMK soon as a date is secured.

This would be a good time if anyone wants prints from last year's event. As I suggested earlier, it would be best from our end to group it all together. Helps with the workflow. :buttrock

We use a photo lab on the mainland, so we would be shipping whatever/whoever wants in a ten days to two weeks after placing the order.

Sunday for dinner sounds great. Give me a call 879.2879 and we'll set times, etc. What sort of food are yo up for? -Scott

Here are the prints that I definitely want:
07260156
07260165
07260307
07260309

8X10? 11X14?

I will probably need to buy a bunch for BMWCCH Newsletter use also, but they only need to be 4X6.

Edit:These should do it Scott…

07260244, 193, 040, 360, 371, 380, 288, 365, 005, 035, 178, 265, 285

So was the Cooper S that beat you the one with $30K of work in it?

Thats the one... the upgrade $ figure is second hand, but he's done a good amount of work on the car!

As BO suggests, our courses are a bit limited and seem to favor smaller/lighter rides.

The Beastmaster
04-22-2004, 05:30 AM
$30k in mods? Is that John Brownings old car? Is it Dark Silver with a killer ICE system and a JCW kit?

MauiM3Mania
04-22-2004, 01:35 PM
I'm being vague on the level of mods cause it's second hand news. The car does have VRs on K1s, and I think its got a cam kit, pulley kit, LW fly, much suspension work, quaife, and no idea what else.

As I understand, all work was done professionally, so there is a significant amount of the cost.

It's the light silver car seen in this months photo gallery and I believe it was purchased new.

I'll ask for details the next time I see the owner.
