View Full Version : Maybe a stupid question...5 series backseat comfort

How comfortable is the back seat of your 5er? What if you're 6'+, do you have enough leg room? I'm used to a Deville, so if anyone can compare the two as far as back seat size, comfort, etc, that'd be awesome!

If this belongs in a different place, let me know..

Rear seat leg room isn't great. I'm 6'3". There is no way that two of me could sit front to back - at least not comfortably. No comparison to a Deville. The 5 is definitely a mid-sized car, not a large car. Head room seems OK though. If the driver is 5'8" or something, a 6 footer can sit behind them relatively easily.

Just look at one and check it out for yourself - that's the only way that you'll really know whether it meets your needs or not. Good luck!

If you are used to a Deville, buy a 740.

Ditto...a former Seville owner should be looking at the 7 series 740i (or preferably the "iL" for the utmost rear leg room) if interior cabin room is a major criteria. The e39 5 series is a midsize sedan which is more comparable to the Caddy's CTS in size...whereas the Seville and 7 series are large sedans.

Below is the back seat of an e38 740iL...note that the front seats are behind the B pillar and there's still plenty of rear leg & feet room. ;)

No one rides in the back seat. Im not a cab. Nor do I drive one. The only one that sits back there is my Gf's stuffed Puppy. He's ALWAYS buckled in for safety.

It really depends on who's sitting in the front, I'm only 5'11" and some people have problems sitting behind my drivers seat.
Edit: I see you're in fort collins, if you can't get ahold of an e39 and want to check one out in person let me know.

my wife doesn't complain about the space in the back seat because she always rides in the front.
my girlfriend though, loves how much leg and head room there is. :)

go figure.

I really wouldn't know, because I don't ever sit back there, never have, and never will. To be honest, I couldn't care less. I do have friends in the car a lot, but I don't buy cars so they can be comfy. In fact, that's not the last consideration - its not even one. Lol. I buy a car because I enjoy driving it, passenger comfort is low on my list. Hell, my last 2 cars were a MkIII Toyota Supra Turbo and an E36 coupe. In the Supra, my seatback was only a couple inches from the rear seat. Yes, I stuffed passengers back there. Yes, they complained. No, I didn't care....lol.

Now, seriously, if you need this car for multiple clients going in the back seat or stuff, unless you're a midget, I'd say they aren't gonna be that comfy. I'm 6'3" and there's not much room behind me. However, in the E38 740iL, I can set the front seat to a comfortable driving position, and actually stretch out in the back! If you need to take clients, seriously, they will love you for having the 740iL. For pure fun and the occasional bum you shove in the back seat, get the 5er.

I'm 6' 5" and I don't have a problem with the back seat. It's true that if I tried to sit behind where I put the driver's seat, that I'd be in trouble. But sitting behind most normal sized people, I have plenty of room. If it's a huge worry for you though you ought to check out the 7 series with the L wheelbase.

I am 6'2", my brother is 6'6", and I have a friend who is 6'8" and his son is 6'9". A former student of mine is the starting center for Columbia University's basketball team, and he is over 7'. All of them have ridden in my back seat.

I find the back seat fine as long as I don't need to move my legs around much, i.e. no long car trips. My brother needs someone under 6' to be in the front seat. My friend and his son need someone under 5'10" to sit in the front seat. My former student always had to ride up front.

In my 528, I did take four people plus me from DC to New Orleans with few complaints. However, they are very patient people, and fairly short.
