View Full Version : OK, what happen at the Auto X?
monster man 02-17-2008, 09:03 PM you must report all ...:redspot
i know this is a little premature but i am dying to find out how the movement represented! :buttrock
start replying as soon as you guys get back.
AlaskaBimmer 02-17-2008, 10:46 PM Yea please let me know I want to see a photo of a cone killed for me....
I just got finished removing yesterday's 6 inches of snow that fell from my driveway....That snow blower I got last year was definatly worth it....
uberpanzer 02-18-2008, 02:27 AM Sorry, been doing "Honey Do" list stuff since i got back. We had 4 e21's show up. Daryl's (OLD MAN) 4 Mod 320i, CJ's (blitzed310) 6-8-12 Mod 323i, Max's (forgot his s/n on here) 4 Mod 320i, and my 4 Mod 320i Turbo.
CJ turned a 71.xxx sec run. Very decent against the field he was up against. That and M Modified are the most contested groups in SD BMW CCA autoX. VERY tough competion, good drives and some nicely modded cars.
Max and his lady co-drive his white e21. That takes a toll on the tires (esp at the venue down here) so their times weren't THAT great. But they helped make the majority of the 4 Mad cars e21's. :D
Daryl came away with a 70.3xx sec run. With the times written on the boards at the end of the day, we thought this put him at 2nd in 4 Mod, behind Jay from Big Fish in his e30 318is. Turns out that someone wrote another time down wrong on the board. Since they do scoring off of the computer recorded times, he didn't get 2nd, but came in 3rd, less than 1sec behind 1st in the class.
I finished with a 70.153 sec run. My time was the one written wrong, I sole Daryl's 2nd place. He'll get me next time though. :buttrock
monster man 02-18-2008, 02:38 AM did you guys get any pics?
320 bimmer 02-18-2008, 02:50 AM sweet, great day to all then!!
yeah, some pics of you all racing would be sick!
I had to work ftmfl... :(.
OLD MAN 02-18-2008, 10:16 AM Like Doug said my Trash talking quickly turned to humble pie and a dish of crow when the real results were read....... it would have been the first time I had ever topped Doug in 3 years.
But it was a very fun day with four E21's out on the track! :redspot
Hope to have the 320/6 out there in March in 6 mod. Pictures should be fourth coming soon.
TheNeek 02-18-2008, 11:02 AM no one put a camera in their car?
OLD MAN 02-18-2008, 11:38 AM I have not done that to date - Red Ribbon Army had his camera and took some great shots
uberpanzer 02-18-2008, 01:48 PM Camera in the car? Are you kidding? I'm kicking myself for putting on 20-30 lbs on my belly over the last 2 years, you think I want the extra weight of a CAMERA?!?!?! :stickoutt
Seriously though, I have no mount for one currently. Seats have headrest integrated into them, so no posts to put a mount on. Once I get a roll bar, then we'll see...
blitzed310 02-18-2008, 02:36 PM Yeah I will probably never get close to my competition with me being in Class D 6-8-12 Mod. Those guys come out with some serious track cars and multiple Auto-X seasons under their belt. However, I felt I did rather well for my second time in the E21. IMO my style of driving was much better than the first round, and my times did nothing but improve with each run. My best for the day was a 70.111 but that was a practice session. My best scored time was a 71.332. The class winner in 6 Mod was a 66.XXX. That's 5 seconds I need to make up.
My take on the SD Auto-X. It ran a little smoother than the LA session and felt just a tad more organized. However, the parking lot surface was horrible. There were 3 drainage swales on the course that completely disrupted the car as they were at hard right/left apex's that simply tossed your cars ass in the air and scooted it over a foot or so. This is where I could feel the classic E21 ass come out from under me. I do not have the experiance to handle this type of situation flawlessly yet. With those swales it affected my mind set because the car would completely bottom out and make a loud thunk, I kept thinking something would break. Also the integrity of the asphalt was simple non-existent, and by the end of the day the track was disintegrating. As a turn marshal you could see just how bad the track was. The track was though, very technical, and was set-up for a E21. I need to learn my car more as it has an abundance of low end torque that makes throttle steer a big learning curve for me.
I'm very excited to get out there again and I'd like to thank Daryle for the help in getting my car ready for this event. I'd also like to thank the instructors for their efforts in guiding me around the track. I took about 7 runs in their cars and learned allot just from talking with them and seeing their style.
Amir has some pics that I think he will post up soon. I do have a camera mount, just no video camera, so if you guys have one I'll bring the mount next time.
I'd also like to add that I was not impressed with the score keeping. There was a consistent amount of bickering from people who complained that their times were wrong. My buddy mike was told he did 4 runs and his times were all 2 or seconds slower as they recorded. I was working the finish line during his run and was 20 feet from the clock and recorded all three of his times. His best was a 69.372, and they said that run was a 75.XX, I mean seriously!
mxl556 02-18-2008, 03:18 PM It was okay, my times improved by 6 seconds compared to Daryl's time since the last time ( last time I had 93 secs when Daryl had 83 ).Yesterday I had 74 vs Daryl's 70. I'm finally very satisfied with the suspension setup I have now, from now on I can practice on the car without changing the handling every time. Veronica got better times as well, compared to before. For us, this course was little too fast, with 65Hp on the wheels there is a big disadvantage. Pavement was bad , not so bad as west lot is though... At least there were not too many potholes. The funny thing is that all of e21's did better than some of the M stock cars which ran in the 80's. The range was from 64 to 83 IIRC.
The timing can be a problem and sometimes is ( one time we had non working clock- no times for a day). The best thing to do - have someone watching the times for you as you go and then correct the board.
Max
TheNeek 02-18-2008, 03:26 PM Camera in the car? Are you kidding? I'm kicking myself for putting on 20-30 lbs on my belly over the last 2 years, you think I want the extra weight of a CAMERA?!?!?! :stickoutt
I was just looking for photos of the event. A little defensive about your weight :confused
The surface sounds a ton like the surface for Tucson events. Old parking lot. We would always talk about the "marbles" but it was really just crappy asphalt that was kicked up off the lot. I caught a stone in the leg once. Hurt like hell. When I was serious into Auto-X we would make the 40 minute drive to Sierra Vista where they had an Auto-X event on an old Army base. Flat concrete test pad that was probably an 1/8th mile square. It was awesome. Scrubbed of tires real quick.

Here you can see that drainage swale that just messed up your flow, as soon as you hit the apex your tail end just lifts up and shifts over a foot or so.

Here is Brian's car (BMWCCA Instructor), an 02 with 780,000 miles on the clock. DD and an abused track car. I call this car the kidney buster, I love the way Brian drives, no power nothing and his driving is FAAAAAST.

TheNeek 02-18-2008, 05:02 PM Atleast you guys get shaded parking. Cars are looking good gents.
Nice stance on the that braking right hander CJ. True E21 form.
320 bimmer 02-18-2008, 05:33 PM nice cars guys, good pics too. looks like a fun day!

Look very close to eachother. what suspention are you running cj? looks like alot of fun. I might have to sign up fairly soon! LOOKS SO FUN!
blitzed310 02-18-2008, 07:44 PM Yours looks better. I cant get the hood right, I need to mess with it more, but the radiator support is fubar, as is the front valance.
Its on Eibach springs, not sure of the shocks/struts as they are painted black, but I was told they were Sports but I don't believe that. Its also got DIY urethane subframe bushings, front/rear sway bar bushings with stock bars. Thats pretty much it, not sure if Im going to spend money on this car yet. I'll do the brakes this summer though, but thats all I got planned. I might not keep this car.
OLD MAN 02-18-2008, 10:03 PM Just wanted to ADD:
CJ, you and Mike did killer on the track for just getting started!! :redspot :redspot :redspot
Max really glad your handleing is coming together for you..:alright
Amir GREAT job on the pic's or CJ are these yours?
NEEK - as far as in car videos go they are fun to which but do not really help drivers much. These stills of the cars going through the corners are GREAT, aids for seeing what the car is doing, how close you are getting to the cones, and if you're on or off the line. At lease in auto cross take these pictures, they show me I need to stiffen up the car some more and change some angles.
uberpanzer 02-19-2008, 12:35 AM Nic, I was talking about adding extra weight to the car. I could care less if people see pics of my fat butt. :stickoutt
CJ, the person that told that to your buddy was me. I don't know who lost track, but the guys in the trailer and those of us on the boards had him at 4 runs. The 4th run was the 69.xxx that you saw as well. But since it was the 4th one recorded for that number car, it didn't count. And the boards are more for people to see how they are doing vs the other drivers BEFORE the results are made official. The boards are NOT what count. The computer recorded times are. And this was made very clear to Daryl and I since the board listed me at 70.513sec but the computer had me at 70.153sec. Your buddy may have thought he got a rerun and didn't, I don't know. All I know is that they announced 3 times for him prior to the 69 and they told US that the final time did not count. Please don't blame the board guys for that one (since Daryl and I were both working them at that time :D ). If there are problems with timing, blame the guys in the trailer.
That drainage thing there was the 'nicer one', I thought. That one I was taking a line where I wouldn't upset the car by it and was usually back to full throttle when I hit it. Granted I didn't figure that out until the LAST practice run and then just decided to go balls to the wall through it anyway. If I break something I brake something. Although I ~DO~ live a lot closer to the stadium if I need to tow it out of there...
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x63/szed/BMWCCA%20San%20Diego%20Auto-x%2002-17-08/DSCN06290240.jpg
This was the other drainage thingy, the one that rubbed me the wrong way, since it was in the late apex corner and I never felt like I could hit that turn right. Oh well, next time is another course. :D
Oh and CJ, no offense to you or the 323i, but it looks like you could take my King of Lean tittle over. The Left Hander from the rear shot above has you digging in pretty good. :D Gotta love what grippy tires can do to suspension lean.
And again, every one of us did really well time wise for this. The slowest times wasn't an e21. And doing THAT well on time CJ your 1st time in SD at that lot is really awesome.
bensmall 02-19-2008, 12:53 AM Looks like everyone had a great day! Cars look awesome guys well done! :D
CJ, is that part of your air filter where your driver side high beam would be? I remember your green car used to have it in your old sig...
323 looks great BTW :)
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x63/szed/BMWCCA%20San%20Diego%20Auto-x%2002-17-08/DSCN04600116.jpg
blitzed310 02-19-2008, 12:53 AM I told Mike to go talk to you since I saw you working it and figured you could have an explanation not to place blame. I had him on the 2way after each run telling him what his times were. I know I didn’t miscount him since I was working just before the finish line and could clearly see the times posted on the clock which I recorded to him 3 runs. We spoke to the guys in the trailer after all the guys were done running and they said he also did 4 runs. Either way I guess it just gut-checks your pride to have time deducted from your score that you believe wasn’t warranted. But we are not to gripe about that, we're out there to develop our skills, not to play time tag.
None taken Doug you cant hurt my feelings :stickoutt I will need to do something about that, but not at this time, other affairs have priority.
Ben thanks, yes it is the same one from the 320i, I just woke up one morning and it was on the driver’s side, and it so happens that the air induction nozzle is right there...
mxl556 02-19-2008, 04:04 AM Amir & CJ, thanks for the really nice photos!!!
CJ- congrats on the great times , especially for the 1st time there!
Doug- glad the car was ok and made it back, I remember your concerns about blowing the motor.
Daryl- I'm glad you had fun too, great times as always, my benchmark. I'm getting closer ;)
Max
AlaskaBimmer 02-19-2008, 05:14 AM With a mere 2k of suspention crap you can get almost all of that lean out of an e-21, I was amazed at the difference my setup made....of course race tires help too...
We are lucky to get a run over 30 seconds here.....if we have a 60 sec+ run it usually loops back onself several times and turns into a memory course that 1/2 the people go off course with and get frustrated. We also only get 6-8 runs and we get 30-50 cars an event. I don't know why we don't race later into the evening since daylight isn't an issue in auto-x season....Thanks to 9-11 and heighened security we lost our port site, all runways (FAA restricted use of all Alaska runways) and the military is dificult to work with so far and it's tough to get in there....Our drag strip would be awesome to autox in if they didn't have gravel pads between the parking rows, so it limits our courses a ton....
Man you guys have me wanting it to be auto-x season again....our first event is the end of April, the snow should all be gone by then.

uberpanzer 02-21-2008, 02:09 AM Found another pic of m car. This camera man was only there for an hour though and didn't get any other e21's. :( Low enough?
http://www.fqphoto.com/bmw/bmw_autox%20(56).jpg
Uberpanzer is bringing sexy back with that pose for our e21's :D
OLD MAN 02-21-2008, 10:27 AM I LIKE IT!! :alright
MAD LIL E21 02-21-2008, 10:49 AM thats awsome uberpanzer, i wish i never sold my wheels the same as that now:( hope to be doing autox's soon. just got a couple more things to sort suspension wise before i hit the track. then its brakes and engine swap time
