Normally I would not do this kind of thing, but the roads were empty today, just the two of us. When I was leaving work this afternoon, there was a purplish blue 06 Eclipse at the light in front of me. As I pull up behind him I can see him looking in his rear-view mirror, and he rev's his car a bit. I am kinda rolling my eyes, thinking what the hell.

Once the light turns green, he floors it and turns to head toward the same freeway on ramp that I am going to. I let him pull out a little ways and follow behind him in the same lane, not sure what he has in mind. The on ramp has a fairly sharp right hand turn, and as he brakes I pull up closer behind him.

At this point we are doing about 45mph and I am about 2 car lengths back so I drop it into 3rd. Now this on ramp has the lane that keeps going and turns into an exit only lane at the next exit, so there is some room to run. As I start to power out of the turn, he steps on it and merges onto the freeway and continues to rev it up.

I figure screw it, mash the gas and quickly begin to pull him in. As I pass him he has this funny look of disbelief and desperation on his face.:D I ran out of room at about 105 and merge in front of him at about 2 car lenths ahead. At this point we are finally coming up on some other cars, so I slow down to about 65.

He moves over a lane and flys by me at 80, staring me down as he goes. He continues to weave through traffic just to show how good of a driver he is.:rolleyes

did you not have your bimma posted for sale? i think that i have seen it somewhere. by the way good kill, these eclipses are kinda slugish, i tesdrove one, and afterwards i tesdrove the EVO IX and the eclipse seemed a turtle.

I didn't know those bodystyle Eclipses were out that long ago but I'm not that into Japanese cars anyways.

Sounds to me like he just didn't know enough about BMWs and thought your car looked old so it must be easy picking for his fairly new ride :) Even without the supercharger you would have beat him.

The eclipses just keep getting uglier and fatter. I only like the 3rd generation. I wonder how they handle overall and how quick they are?

Not to spark any argument - just using it as an example - the pre 07 350zs had 50+ bhp more than the e36 m3, but were only slightly quicker.

Gearing is a large factor. Weight also plays a role.

Being wrong wheel drive definitely doesn't help the eclipse.

It might have more hp, but I would be really really surprised if a stock eclipse v6 would beat a stock e36 m3.

Those things look so ugly its not even funny, I've noticed ALOT of cars these day get uglier and uglier as designers run out of ideas and try to "fit in" with the current generation edgy designed cars, AKA: Subaru WRX's, Mits. Eclipse, Mits. Evo, the Nissan Maximas, and alot more I cant think off the top of my head.

dude, its a lot more than just flywheel hp. you have to consider other factors like the gearing, or being. also the m3 has awesome weight distribution and aerodynamics. Its a lot more than just two hp numbers stacked up against each other.

There was a guy in college that liked my wife alot and he raved about wanting a sports car and only talked about one...the cougar. Eventually he got it but I got the woman, and eventually the E36 M.

Same here. The 3rd gen isn't bad, but I think Mitsubishi got it right on the 2nd try.
