aright, its off the topic of e21's but on the topic of classic lovable bimmers

Today i bought a '71 2002 to use as a racer. the PO already stripped the interior and started fitting a nice bucket seat, one from a e30 M3 evo (ill have more pics tomorrow, since thats when im picking it up). also in the trunk theres a 5spd from a 83, and a full set of 14x6 et 30 BBS rims, and 3 more stocks. also got a e12 head, freshly machined with fresh cut valves and 3 different carbs. engine is out of a 76 and a passenger seat out of a 76. engine runs like a champ, also has headers. and a tii dist with optical pick up :D. all of that and some more STUFF for $1500. its just about ready to auto-x too. i just need to finish up the seat bracket and put a seat belt bar in (eventually going to build my own full cage).

oh, and the only rust is on the rocker panels and in the spare tire spot.

going tomorrow to pick it up!!! :buttrock

here's the only pic i took today when we sealed the deal.

i was thinking of going henared, like ny 320is... but im not totally sure, i think matt black with no trim and all the holes filled in would look good too. it came with a couple carbs... but, im building a 1.8 out of a 320i right now, so i think i might just put that in here. the engine im building will be good.
high comp. pistons with webber side draft 40 dcoe's and EDIS. could i use a e12 head on a 1.8? if i can, then ill use the new head and new valves with the reground cam, that'll save me a lot of money on my build if i can use that head.

but a link to a cheap good m10 would be nice too.

Subject: Large Displacement M10 Build-up

There's been a lot of discussion about how to build a larger displacement M10 motor of late, so I thought I'd share my experience. I am a firm believer in increasing displacement and IMO you need at least one cubic centimeter of displacement for each pound of curb weight for a BMW to feel "torquy" on the street. Since I built this motor more than ten year ago for a 2002 which is 300 to 500 pounds lighter than an E21 318i/320i, so I'm not sure how it would feel in a 2400 to 2500 pound E21 but it sure made my 2050 pound '67 1600 stand up and dance.
This is the only way I know to build a larger displacement M10 using all BMW parts and results in 2234cc of displacement. If you approach this cookbook style you will need:
One E21 or late 2002 M10 engine block (89mm bore)
One E30 M3 S14 crankshaft (84mm stroke)
Four M10 connecting rods (they are all the same)
One E12 style M10 cylinder head as used on late (73>) 2002
Four of the six pistons from a 3.4 liter M30 with 10.0:1 CR (used in 84 to 87 non-catalyst Euro motor)
One early E21 or E30 FI intake manifold or any carb manifold
Bore block to fit 92mm pistons--this is the maximum feasible overbore (3mm/0.120") for an M10. Anything larger and you are going to strike water. Deck block 1mm/0.040" in order to achieve the correct piston height since the M30 pistons have a pin height for a 86mm stroke. Assemble the lower end and clearance the block crankcase, crank counter weights, and/or connecting rods as necessary. Re-balance any moving part that required grinding. Shave the E12 head 0.5mm/0.020" in order to achieve the rated 10.0:1 CR. This reduces the E12 head's 61cc combustion chamber to 58cc which is the same volume as the M30 head's combustion chambers for which the pistons were designed. BTW, the reason for using an E12 head is because its combustion chambers are shaped the most like the M30 head's combustion chambers of any of the M10 heads and therefore will accept the "grand piano" shaped dome of the M30 pistons. You can use any intake manifold except the 80 to 83 E21 FI manifold because it does not have a provision for injector mounting.
If you are willing to substitute custom made aftermarket pistons, these can be made up with the correct crown configuration for any of the available M10 heads. E30 M3 S14 pistons will not work because the M10 89mm block cannot be safely overbored to 93.4mm.
Again, as I stated at the beginning, this increase will not have the same affect as it does in a lighter weight 2002. But for you die-hard four cylinder fans it is an alternative.

FWIW and cheers,
Jack

no problem. pretty simple set up. one of the reasons i love bimmers, i call them the chevy of german cars. everything swaps over so easy and they last forever

hahaha yeah.

mmm engine sounds sweet. lots of part hunting, oh well. yeah, its a shame parts aren't quite as common for e21's as they are 2002's, or chevy's for that matter. i own a 73 gmc, and man, i can throw a rock and hit some part of another one of those.

this engine build sounds pretty good. i have the block from a 83 320i already, and with this new car got a great e12 head, wow, im half way there!!!:buttrock. ill deff be going carbs though, i don't want to deal with k-jet anymore. i got some nice carbs with the car... but i'd like some dcoe's.... maybe later on.

anyway, thats a different story. right now im just focusing on getting this car to the next auto-x. that means finishing the seat stuff, buying a 5 point'er and putting in a temp. bar to hold the belt while im doing the full cage. those are the important bits along with getting some new rockers, the car runs and has suspension stiff as hell, im happy haha.

but, its going to be good an proper come the start of the next racing season, this is my first track car, so, it'll be fun.

320 bimmer - Great find on the 2002 & Wow, what a great price! That was my first pick before I bought the e21. My friend had one and it was a blast to drive. That will be a great car for auto x - small, light, and fast! Post more pics when you pick her up!

That's a good deal, looks like it has dropped springs too. Looks and sounds like it's similar to my last one and i got 2700 for mine. Good job. 02's are even easier to work on than e21's. Make sure you do the 3.91 limited slip conversion. Take it from me, you will have an absolute rocket.

cheers you guys. ill post some more pics in a little bit, i picked it up yesterday but drove back at night, no good pics. yeah, it is lowered, and i was either going to to go lsd or weld it... i haven't full decided.

:redspot for those wanting pics, here they are!!

the car at it's new home :buttrock the hella nice bucket seat :D the really great sounding '76 engine, with header :eyecrazy the set of 14x6.5 et30 BBS rims :P:D and the two things that are going onto the engine in the very very near future, a tii dist. with optical pick up and a 40/40 carb :alright :buttrock.

Yeah welded would be fun, but you'll still want to change the gearing. I have a 3.91 open you could weld up if you're interested.

hmm maybe. right now im just focusing on getting it ready to even drive. i need to finish the seat brackets and put in a belt bar for a 5 point harness.

ill think more about mechanical things when i come to it haha. right now i just want to drive the thing.
ill deff keep in mind you have one though.
