Found a momo prototipo steering whl in a Bavaria a few days ago. The Bavaria was a front end victim so the whl was crushed and a write-off, but I pulled it for the hub which is $70 + here and works on our cars.

Another part diver had a go at the thing before I and got to it, and removed one of the 3mm hex mounting screws before solidly stripping another two and giving up. I pulled the whl and got the rest of the screws out except for the one in the right pic. It's a steel screw going into a cast aluminium adaptor. I was thinking of just drilling it out - any ideas? Just don't want to damage the adaptor.

I found the horn button in the back window of the Bavaria.:D

LOL The wheel is toast. The pic doesn't show it but it is out of shape. You can see the stress marks in the left pic. Once they've been crushed they are pretty much imposible to get back into shape. There are lots of them out there though - from $170 to $210 on ebay new. I want to save the adaptor hub on the old one.

I have that same wheel on my car, except mine doesn't have the holes in the spokes. :)

A hand drill isn't going to do it, would probably just ruin it. Do you know a machinist?

That was the next step. I don't think a hand drill will do much other than ruin the hub, however one shop suggested having a go at it with a left-hand bit. The bit runs the opposite way to normal, which would hopefully grab the screw enough to get it to spin out part way, a pair of vise grips could then finish the job.

Another idea was to cut/score the steering whl itself since it has had it anyway, removing enough material to release it from the screw, and then removing the screw with vise grips again. Those are the cheap non-machinist fixes and I'm not too confident in their viability. The shop didn't give me a quote to remove the screw but suggested it would negate any savings over buying a new adaptor hub.

Gave it a shot and the sucker just spun. My bad - should have mentioned that. I figgered I'd fish for a few ideas before I made it even worse. Thanks for the reply tho.

do you have a dremel? you can try to cut a slit into it and take it out like a flat head screw

Holy crap! Yes I do have a dremel, got it for christmas and promptly forgot all about it. Thanks for the brilliant suggestion, +1000 props flying your way.
The whls over at my dad's, I'll get on it this weekend.:)

Just a quick update and a thanks for the help. I got the adaptor hub removed a la wayfast's dremel suggestion. The steering wheel is in pieces in the first pic. The brass horn ring came off the back of the adaptor, it was pretty corroded so I gave it a quick clean and polish. Does anyone know if the ring is glued into place on the back of the adaptor or if it just floats free? There is a plastic insert which insulates it from the rest of the hub on the back of the adaptor, and the amount of material that was sitting there seems to indicate it was glued in. Anyone know for sure?

The second pic is a windshield I scored for $45. Mine was vandalized when the PO had it. I'd never seen a decent windshield in a wrecked e21 before this.

Finally what the heck happened to the hazard switch DIY link? I was just about to crack one open (both hazard and beer) and couldn't get the link to work. Damn, just when I am both hazardous and thirsty, is there another link?

Thanks yet again wayfast. Er, no french but the pics are useful. It seems I'm owing a brew or two if ever we meet.
