View Full Version : My attempt at a custom shift light.

After installing the supercharger, I was hitting the rev limiter too often. So, I decided to install a shift light. My A-pillar cover fabric was coming off, and when I removed the cover, the plastic tabs broke off. I decided to try to mount the light behind there since it was broken anyways. I bought a Summit Racing shift light that gets it's trigger signal off the tach. Then I took an old LED strip from a 3rd brake light and wired it to the bulb contacts of the shift light. Drilled holes for the LED' sin the A-pillar cover, re-upholstered it, and mounted it with velcro. It's visible in sunlight, but a little bright at night. I rarely hit 7K RPM's at night though.

Pics can be seen here:

That's different and not a bad looking, given the photo you posted. It's a solution to a problem I never had though.
I always thought the engine noise and tach needle served that function.:dunno

Very nice! How about an audio shift indicator? You hit the rev and it says "SHIFT!" :dunno

now... my 86 RX-7 has that. Except is sounds like "the worst noise in the world" from Dumb & Dumber.

i would imagine at night that gives a pretty sick glow on your face when you shift, designating you as the driver of one nasty m3 and everyone is skeered of you

how bright is it at night though. could be like staring at a LED brake light point blank. looks great though, and origional.

I agree. However, I only started hitting the rev limiter after the supercharger. Kinda embarassing at an autocross. It revs very quickly in the upper RPM's. Also, the pull at 6K RPM's feels so good, I think I forget there is a redline.

I posted a night picture at the same link http://galambos.us/shiftlight.html. It's a crappy picture, but shows how it lights up the interior a bit. It's not as bad as staring at a brake light point blank. The LED's are somewhat directional. They point to the bottom of the steering wheel. So I'm sure my crotch is glowing red at 6K (where I have it set).

Taking things out of context makes me roffle.

Pretty sick setup, good to see people doing different stuff.

Dang! You'll definitely know when it is time to shift. Bonus is that people behind you just might think you are hitting the brakes.

This is most deff. thinking out side the box but a bit too much for my taste.

What you really need is a sequential shift light not a Drag shift light, I have something like THIS (http://www.cranston-racing.com/SequentialShiftLight.htm) in my race car . I've never hit my rev limiter with the turbo unless I have too, like when I'm drifting.

Those lights working as a sequential light major props to that.

holy snykies, thats alot of lights.
kind've redundant though.
i can't imagine the temporary blindness at night is any good.

question, I had bought this from Jegs
http://www.jegs.com/i/Auto%20Meter/105/5310/10002/-1

when I recieved it, it had a warning about how it may not work on all direct ignition motors. i own an m50. anyone with experience??

should I even try to see if it'll work. I've managed to retro fit a small 3mm red led into my cluster. Very nice, but not functional at the moment.

I guess the ability to see at night while driving a car on public roads is over-rated anyway.

Now if you can show us how you can rig it into the steering wheel (ala the 599GTB) that would be even sweeter....

Do you have a kill switch for driving at night after you have a splitting headache from work:eyecrazy and you don't that thing blinking at you?

Why not just go with the e90 perf. pack wheel??

Dude, that was below the coinpurse. Once I get that deers head out of my grille, I am gonna make you a hood ornament ala Boss Hog.

BTW, creative shift light. I would like to see a radar detector integrated like that!

I love the ingenuity! Does the whole thing light up at once or gradually "rise"?

I have a funny story about my experience today at United BMW's parts department I have to post up (they're right down the street from my parent's house where we were working and we needed to buy some more door panel clips)

Actually it wasn't very funny at the time :shifty

This was like 2 hours after I had just bought the same parts from ya'll

When I first read this I was dreading seeing what it would be.

Very impressed, classiest shift light I've ever seen. :worship:

I can't find a manual on that unit, but if it reads a standard tach signal, it should work. I found it easy to piggy-back the tach wire at the instrument cluster.

To the others:

I get about 18-19 MPG daily driving.

Lights are all at once, not sequential.

I tend not to redline at night. If I'm out, there's a good chance I got booze in me. Don't need to attract attention! I did find that if I cut the voltage down to 6V, the lights will come on less bright. Any less voltage, the diodes don't fire.

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm still waiting on a negative one from Tpat.
