So I have a 97 528i, and I am having issues with my car. It seems that it does not want to lock any more. The key fob has not worked in a while, but when it does work it locks all doors but the drivers side front. When I manually insert the key to lock the car it does not want to go. Any thoughts? Bad electrical in the front door?

There should be a red LED light on your master key...when you press the buttons, does it illuminate? You don't mention it...but did you check to see if the battery is dead?

If you have the low cluster...I don't think you get the REMOTE KEY BATTERY message since you have the GRAPHIC DISPLAY on your instrument cluster instead of the alpha/numeric display (like in the 540i with the high cluster)...the instructions below are from my e38 owners manual...but the battery replacement procedure is the same:
