View Full Version : Car won't jumpstart. FSU issue?

Here's how it is:

It's been under 0 weather for the last three weeks so the battery is drained dead. It died on me at best buy about two or three months ago, but every once in awhile the car won't start without a jump. Sometimes when I shut the car off, it sounds like there's a quiet fan in the dashboard that's still running and won't shut off. So anyway, since then I've had her parked and of course, the battery is dead.

So I hooked up the charger to it, after about five minutes, it gave me a fault, saying it won't charge. I reset it and left it for a couple of hours, no dice. No charge. Car won't start. Just clicks and flashes the lights. I shut the trunk (stupid idea) and go warm up my hands inside the house, and decide I'm going to pull the battery, take it to sears and have them test it. Come back outside, can't open the trunk with the remote, car is completely dead. I hit the trunk release under the dash, doesn't work either. I use my key on the trunk, lock is frozen. So the battery is locked in the trunk. The only door that opens is the driver side door, since I left it unlocked. I go inside to try the trunk release again, and this time I notice a clicking sound coming from under the glove box region. It hits me, the FSU is probably bad, and then I remember the fan that sometimes turns on and won't go off. Symptoms of a bad FSU.

Anyway, I figure to get to the battery I should jump the car. I pull up dad's truck, and hook everything up. Once the cables are hooked up, car obviously has power. I unlock the trunk with the remote, good, now I have access to the battery, so I leave the trunk slightly open. I figured while I was here, I'd try and start the car and warm her up a bit before pulling the battery. I turn the key, same thing. Car seems to have plenty of power to start, but it won't. Just sits there and click. I rev up the truck and leave her hooked up for more power. Still nothing. Just clicks and flickers.

So, there's two issues here:

Battery won't take a charge.

Something under the glovebox clicks and I notice an interior fan stays on sometimes. So it's probably the FSU.

My question is, would a fried FSU alone prevent the car from starting, or would it prevent the battery from taking a charge? The battery is coming out no matter what, and the FSU will be replaced, but is there anything else it could be?

Let me know, thanks!

I just had FSU trouble, and it drained the battery after sitting only a couple of days.

However, it never prevented jump-starting or the battery taking a charge. Unfortunately you may have other stuff going on.

Are you trying to jump from the engine bay terminal? That didn't work for me, I had to jump battery to battery. If you do this, read the owners manual -- they had a few things to do before disconnecting, like turning fan and heads on to prevent some kind of surge.

Good luck!

Battery's after repeated draining and charging can cause a short internally and will not let a car jump start. It is never a good idea to charge a battery by jump starting and than letting the alt do the rest. I would say yes the battery is now fried but went dead because of the FSU. I would suggest a slow trickle charge on the battery and then test it again. Most likely you will need to replace it though but get the FSU replaced or your gonna get stuck again.
