View Full Version : Who does a good job on port / polish
trimegatron 02-09-2008, 11:37 PM I've got my car parked at the garage. C-38 kit and a happy foot killed my HG.
I was going to send it out to VAC. But, I've heard a couple of stories. Anybody have a recommendation, particularly on the east coast?

m3mobbin 02-10-2008, 01:30 AM In Socal we've got Rich Kemph, who has done some awesome headwork for many of the Socal e36 guys. I guess it's kinda impractical to send a head all the way out here though...

Thanks for the thread. I had not a problem with the VAC crew actually as they built my V-8 for me and it is beautiful inside and out lots of photos all over the net. Expensive yes but , I did not have a problem with Tony and actually it was Paul who put my engine together. There are more people with positive stories than bad stories as Discovery Automotive uses VAC , as well as Rickard Anderson in Sweden, 540is, as well as others . Sorry for the fellows bad experience but , give me a break, look at my project and just understand S$it happens. They had my motor from December to March with a few hiccups that we ran into being that we were breaking new territories on this build. I would not hesitate to say they are a great shop. Korman in North Carolina is another quality place.

true - thanks
trimegatron 02-10-2008, 01:37 AM what about memphis? I thought I've heard good things, but so too about VAC. I called Memphis, they were reassuring that they could do anything, but there wasn't a pricing strucuture or any formality to it.

Give you a break? You asked for instances in which they botched jobs...I gave you one. You solicited the info.
I understand all shops make mistakes...but its only fair for said mistakes to be public knowledge once posted about on an internet forum.
Korman in North Carolina is another quality place.
Ive heard bad things about Korman stealing parts off of cars in his lot to meet the needs of other customers (a la Henessey).
To be fair, EVERY shop has a backstory and will always have issues they need to resolve...what matters is how the company reacts in the face of adversity/error.

Dude chill out , it does not seem to be a botched job actually from what I read. Just another crossing of communications and I know those better than most. I never heard about the malfunctions of korman actually but , you seem to be in the know.... AND actually I had a full quote from VAC which they kept to until we had unforseen ( not a word) problems.....
95RogueM3 02-10-2008, 11:57 AM Dude chill out ,
Im not uncalm. I just provided a link to a question you asked (and obviously didnt want answered).

Look at it how you will. The owner thought it was botched and not up to the standards he had expected from VAC. I personally feel (as do most) that if you are spending atleast $10k+ on an engine build, you can expect everything to have been hot-tanked and to really just come out perfect. Barrett (Idiing SIII) certainly did.

Yes, I am.

Thats generally how written estimates go.
Being calm/taking it in the shorts allows people to walk on you. I find that being assertive yet ALWAYS polite makes builds go smoothly and semi-quickly. ;)

there is a machine shop in Georgia called Hightech.
There is a guy there that is very good at porting and polishing and has done many bmw heads, actually he used to port and polish the heads for Bekkers imports. He is very experianced. He has ported and polished my head and it looks and performs great. His name is Buddy and the number to the shop is 229.435.9587
good luck
jone30 02-10-2008, 04:57 PM There's a guy here, right outside of Baton Rouge, named Larry Meux. He may charge 1500, but all of his stuff is good. The man really is some kind of genius.
keeptheuroalive 02-10-2008, 07:31 PM Eagle Automotive Machine in Auburn Georgia. They ported and polished mine for $600 if I recall (it was 3 years ago). They do work on every head imaginable Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, and every domestic. The number to the shop is 770-339-3053. They also sold me a head for around $250 for my car.
jszy25 02-10-2008, 08:02 PM ^ What kind of gains did you get from the P&P?
M52 POWER! 02-10-2008, 08:11 PM I wasn't too happy when VAC spray painted high temp silver on my new built cyl head. Underneath was nasty old aluminum.

I'm really not 100% sure because I put the cams and most of my other mods on at the same time. I will be redynoing the car soon with the AA chip and then hopefully over the summer I will have enough money for Mike McCoy to retune the car. When that happens I will post pictures and charts.

chuck stickley
If you have the $$, either of the two above men works WONDERS on BMW motors. I had the opportunity to have Stickley install an NA motor in my '95 M3...truly awesome work.
