View Full Version : How To Remove Window Scratches benc007 02-08-2008, 03:36 AM Someone lighted "keyed" one of my rear window and now the glass is scatched. :shifty Is there an easy way to remove or hide the scratches? DarkWing6 02-08-2008, 12:49 PM Not really. You could try a glass polish, but those are usually for water spots, etc (things on the glass). The problem with having a polish aggressive enough to actually polish away glass and smooth it out is that this could damage the structural integrity of the glass. Depending on how deep it is, I would just try a glass polish and try to lighten it as much as possible. benc007 02-08-2008, 03:34 PM What kind of glass polish do you recommend? WolfStrong 02-08-2008, 05:29 PM If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail, than it is too deep to be polished out and you need to use touchup paint to remedy the problem. Otherwise, use some simple paint cleaner (if working by hand) or a nice medium polish by machine (and I do not mean those cheap $30 orbitals). For a medium polish, try Meguiar's M83, Pinnacle 2, or Menzerna SIP. benc007 02-08-2008, 06:24 PM WolfStrong, The scratch is in the glass, not on the paint so I don't think your suggestion would work here. jesselyons2002 02-08-2008, 08:47 PM You can try this from diamondite http://www.autogeek.net/glass-repair-kit.html D33p 02-08-2008, 09:57 PM Don't know if this would work but isn't there repair kits for glasses that will "fill" in the scratches, don't know how deep of a scratch this would fix, but it may be worth a shot. Like I said not sure if this would apply. jesselyons2002 02-08-2008, 10:33 PM Don't know if this would work but isn't there repair kits for glasses that will "fill" in the scratches, don't know how deep of a scratch this would fix, but it may be worth a shot. Like I said not sure if this would apply. I think its the kit I suggested. M Powr'd 02-09-2008, 02:03 AM I know this sounds crazy, and it really depends on how deep the scratch is, but my farther-in-law used to use brass-wool and glass polish to remove scratches from glass. He retired from Porche Cars of America, where he ran the plant taking care of incoming cars. I had some light scratches and "etching" on my glass that he was able to remove. (Brass-wool is steel-wool, made from brass, and I'm not sure where he got it from) WolfStrong 02-09-2008, 02:07 AM WolfStrong, The scratch is in the glass, not on the paint so I don't think your suggestion would work here. My mistake :stickoutt +1 on Diamonite. Haven't personally tried it but I hear great reviews on it! JCubedwa 02-09-2008, 02:11 AM Whatever you do, do NOT try to scrub it out with one of the green scrubby sponges you use in the kitchen. Major league scratches are the only result. Trust me, unfortunately. ;( :madflame: TOGWT 02-09-2008, 11:45 AM If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail, than it is too deep to be polished out and you need to use touchup paint to remedy the problem. The theory is correct "If you can feel the scratch with a fingernail it is too deep to polish out" You may find that the optics will be negatively impacted if you try to polish this out, t may look clear after polishing but headlights will refract and blur your vision. |
