Greetings. I have used other 1 other online forum extensively (a wetshaving forum of all things) so I know how annoying it is to see repeat postings. But, I'm in a bit of a crunch and can't wait to really look around and figure out how this works, so here goes.
I have a 1998 328i 5 speed. I've been hearing some funny noises for a few weeks now when driving (particularly when stepping on the gas, particularly in 4th and 5th). Today I noticed my gas mileage plummeting and tonight I took her out and the clutch seemed to be clearly slipping, even in low gears and even just gently accellerating.
I assume that my clutch is slipping and that I need a new one. I know a little about cars and have done my brakes, spark plugs, fuel filter, but nothing major. Looks like a clutch replacement would be a pretty major job.
I guess I'm wondering if anyone has any particular comments about my problem.
Second, I'm wondering how far I might be able to drive it. I heard of a good shop but it is 40 miles from here. Not sure it would make it there.
Finally, do you guys make recommendations of repair shops in a local area? I'm in San Mateo, and at a loss for shops. I used to take it to Peter Pan BMW but they have blatently lied to me on past repairs so I'm not too thrilled about going there - not to mention dealer price gouging.
Thanks in advance from the new guy and is anyone needs shaving tips, I'm your guy (old style with a brush and double-edge razor is the way to go, but has a steep learning curve).
Scott
