The PO (race car shop) put new hoses and belts on the car before I picked it up. It's been a bit more than a thousand miles now and I started smelling antifreeze every once in a while. So I got looking and found the hose scrubbing the big pulley..just about cut all the way thru...went and got another hose, put it on and the new hose is formed the same way, just a -c- hair off from being perfect. Trying to twist the hose a little just caused it to start bowing up. So I just put a ty-wrap on it till tomorrow when I can fab up a nice band strap...maybe there's a bad run of hoses out there? just a word to the wise, get under there and give it another look. I was lucky and woulda been mighty pissed had it blown at night going to work!

I knew a guy that had an issue with that and it turned out to be the pulley. His was a few mm to big, and there is another one out there. Perhaps the water pump was replaced, along with the pulley, but the wrong pulley was installed?

hmmm, I guess anythings possible on a 23 yr old car. But then I'd have to get anal and ck into timing mark differences between US and euro spec, and this things running well so I think I'll just fab a strap up...I'll have to watch it again while it's running and rev it a bit and check it for run out.

OOO...i thought you meant the water pump pulley. If the crank pulley is hitting it, that is a whole nother bucket of worms. The guy i was talking about have water pulley issues, as there is tight clearance there.

Jeff I'm losing my mind, not enough sleep. It is the water pump pulley. I had other issues with the big pulley when I tried to relocate the oil cooler. So maybe you have a good idea there, the pulley being different and all? Couldn't go too much smaller though I'd think.

Are you missing the hose guard Ref. #2 ?

Check and see if the PO still has it sitting on his work bench (or the "junk" drawer in his tool box).

I had the same problem with my car. I now use zip ties to hold the hose out of the way. I've seen that RealOEM diagram before but I don't understand what #2 is affixed to. I can't find a decent picture showing how it is attached to the motor and how it holds the hose from making contact with the water pump pulley. I don't know any other 6er owners in my area so I'm at a loss.

It slips under the bolt for the distributer cap, I can see why people forget and they get left off.

I ordered one from my local bmw dealer. In stock in NJ. 2 day delivery, and it costs $2. I've been having pretty good service from the dealer. Not all, but a lot of their stuff is good price wise as opposed to paying shipping and I really like the factory quality parts
