View Full Version : NorCal v. SoCal again

dfyoung10

People from SoCal use article adjectives in front of numerical highway names. "I was on the 101, there was a wreck on the 405."

NorCal people leave out the "the." It is a dead giveaway; you can spot a SoCal transplant immediately, like when some newscaster from SoCal gets a job on a NorCal TV station.

Sometimes the 805.

On crazy occasions I get the 125 if the 805 and the 5 are too packed.

I only use the 15 when going up to Big Bear.

Ive never even glanced at the 56 or the 94.

My favorite freeway is the 163 coming out of downtown toward the 8 though.

NorCal has better driving roads than SoCal. I've driven on Angeles Crest and the Rim of the World. Both of those roads are way below par compared to the roads I drove on in NorCal.

I'm not going to tell you exactly where they are. However, they're in Mendocino and Lake counties.

I'll concede with roads, G16 is my favorite road in the world. However, we do have some fabulous drives through Malibu, and also through the desert. You can spend days driving in the San Diego desert and still have a corner left unconquered. However, you guys have to concede that we have the superior weather. Better weather = higher number of driving days ;)

No, but at the same time, would you just say freeway? "I am on freeway" you also wouldn't say "I am on street" you would say the street or your street, but when you add the descriptor of El Camino you don't need these any more. In the case, the is a descriptor, it is letting you know exactly where you are by removing all other streets/freeways from the mindset and clarifying that you are on the route in question. If you remove this descriptor it must be replaced with another descriptor or it becomes grammatically incorrect. "I am on 5" makes no sense, but "I am on i5" or "I am on the 5" do because of these descriptors.

you are doing it wrong. and apparently, so is everyone else. El Camino Real is a *name* of a street, so you say "go down El Camino Real" or "go down Main Street". now, will you disagree that "505" or "80" or "237" are not names of streets? they are. they are names of very large stretches of highway, so we can call them "505" or "80" or "237", not "the 505" cuz you don't say "the El Camino". but you can say "the street" or "the interstate" or "the <insert an ambiguous descriptor here>". get it???

HELLA!!!

well, ok, trying to bring all the cali people back together, at least both the norcal and socal believe that the united states is somehow tilted 90 degrees or something. for some reason, all of us think "southerners" are everyone who are east of us, like everyone in idaho, kentucky, illinois, montana, etc are southerners, even though they may be considered the north.

You make good points. It still sounds odd to me to just say 5. It doesn't sound right, something is missing with it, I feel that it does need something else there to garnish it. Route, highway, i, the... just something.

But maybe in reality it is the difference between pop and soda, no rights just different.

the socal way of saying it is definitely inferior. by saying "the 5" you are automatically assuming that the person knows you are talking about interstate 5. if you are giving someone directions who is not from the area, city, state, country, they will just look at you like what is "the 5". is that a street, a train, a subway? and you know what happens when you assume. so putting a discriptor in front of if such as i5, hwy 99, hwy1 is more accurate instead of the general "the", local slang

Huh? Lol. See, you're working off the improper assumption that we would say I5. We don't. In fact, in the Bay Area, no one cares about "the" 5 anyway...lol. We drop anything, when we say a freeway number its already assumed the listener knows what we're talking about. If it is someone from out of the area or you're giving directions or such, we'll append the direction to the end of it.

IE, colloquially, "Yeah, just take 880 from Fremont to San Jose" "680 turns into 280 at 101" "Take Mission (we drop the suffixes, like Blvd, etc a lot too) to 84 East to 680 North"

"I am on 880" makes sense, since we all know what we're talking about. to be honest, 5 is hardly used up here, so it is kind of awkward sounding, but say I'm taking a trip down to SoCal from NorCal: "Yeah, I'm taking 84 to 680 to 580 and taking 5 down to LA." That seems completely normal.

What do nor calers even say? I'm on 5?
YEP! :D

Misogynistic homophobic hate speech AND excessive application of redundant article adjectives.

Are you still mad cause HB is the REAL Surf City and Santa Cruz is 2nd to it? That was so long ago.

I'm not homophobic at all. Gays are great... that's why I like you!:D

indeed we do, "take 880 home, or 680"

i will be takin 5 down to socal next weekend :D (literally) hehe

we only say numbers...no THE, no abreviations.... just numbers =D
except 1 is usually called "highway 1"; even in context just saying "1" makes no sense :confused

They might also be a transplant from The Great White North. "It's 3pm already. There's no way I'm getting on the 401 now; it'll be a parking lot."

I think the difference lies in the amount of freeways socal has vs norcal. There are like 6 major freeways with pretty much the same format *80 (even for n/s and odd for e/w). So when someone says 680, you automatically know it's a freeway.

In socal, there are more than I can count. I lost my train of thought... someone help.

Anyway, I guess any retard would figure out that you're talking about a freeway when you take context into consideration. So "the" is unnecessary. norcal wins
