View Full Version : Hey, it has been awhile
MeanMachine 02-05-2008, 04:29 PM I do look like one of those guys that only signs on when he has a problem, but I assure you, I will contribute more frequently from now on; berating fools, making non-sequitur comments, sarcasm, helping, etc.
The issue at the moment, however, is regarding my V1 install on the e38. I have done it before, so I felt confident going into this.
I ran into my problem very soon, though. The blueish-purple wire that I splice into for V1 power does not seem to have electricity running through it. This is odd, because it was no problem at all on my last e38.
I tested to see if it was the V1 (wasn't), and I also tested the fuses (wasn't). This is the extent of my electrical troubleshooting knowledge.
If anybody has the slightest insight (it could very well be the simplest thing, I have found that it usually is), please chime in. Especially Q. :shifty

MeanMachine 02-07-2008, 12:02 AM So, homelink (that garage door opener thing in the car) does not work or even light up. Could this be part of my problem? It is on the same overhead panel I open up to access the blueish purple 12V wire that is supposed to power the V1.
However the sunroof does work, which is also on that same panel.
Are there alternate wires?

Just to be sure - you're testing with the key on, right? The homelink doesn't work without the key, I don't think. Just a thought.
CaptHerb 02-07-2008, 11:40 AM You can use the 12v wire from the sunroof as well.

indeed I have, but thank you. I have been known to overlook these things.

aha! thank you very much, capt herb. This is the next thing I'm going to try and I'll update...
mudd46738 02-07-2008, 10:57 PM I installed mine on the cig lighter. Do you have a new one or a old one?? I have both. one in the 3 and one in the *& cough** magnum. the new one works AWSOME. so does the old one but it beeps at everything!

Mudd,
Call V1 and inform them of your issue with the radar..Supposedly they will upgrade the firmware for original registered owners.

It does work with the cig lighter, but I am trying to hardwire it into the ceiling for a clean look inside. I may end up going the cig lighter route.
MeanMachine 02-08-2008, 02:46 AM Btw, it didn't work with the sunroof 12v. In fact, I tried all of the sunroof wires.
This is depressing. WTF? :(

mudd46738 02-09-2008, 04:39 PM I have called them to find out the upgrade is the cost of the new one thats in the magnum. But I did find something interesting. They sell refurbs for about 100 off. so I may try to sell mine on ebay for the cost of a refurb. Has anyone tried the escort 9500??
MM are you using the optional hidden display?? Just wondering where (if you were) are going to place it??

Yeah, on a side not, I actually got a refurb (It looks and performs like brand new, I question if it wasn't). I think I got 50 bucks off.
I am not using the optional hidden display, I am actually just hardwiring it to a 12v wire under the sunroof switch panel. At the top of the windshield it is essentially hidden (and in the optimal position for detecting). It looks very clean, too.
Here's the tutorial from e38.org. He even shows how to do the optional display, but I ignored those steps:

MeanMachine 02-11-2008, 03:01 AM What's the deal with my 12V wires? Could I have an aging battery? Could it be that easy?
I guess if it was a stock battery on a 10 year old car...I am talking to myself... :shifty
TxDarth 02-11-2008, 11:27 AM This is fine if you don't have the IR windschield - the V1 or any other detector will not work there with the IR windschield. You have to put it at the bottom of the windschield on the dash in the center where there is a small clear section fot this purpose.:eyecrazy

thank you txdarth, but is there a way to have a hardwired, uncluttered look when it is on the bottom of the windsheild?
MeanMachine 02-19-2008, 10:20 PM this situation is still a conundrum to me.
