View Full Version : Finally! New tires & wheels!
joecautela 02-02-2008, 04:05 PM -Well they're finally on, the spacers arriving late yesterday. Dunlop Goo9's on the 8x16" e38 wheels style 5. They certainly transform the car and I'm very, very happy. I only buzzed them about 12mi up the parkway and back, but I can say that they are extremely quiet, lane transitions on a center crowned road are smooth with no lurching. The old TRX's were shot, hard, and noisy. At slow speeds on my local streets at stop signs I could hear the new tires picking up sand, for me a sure sign of a sticky tire. The front end at speed also seems a bit "lighter", not floating, just lighter. After a couple roundtrips to work I'll re-torque them and check the pressure. Right now they're at 33psi, which is a little high for me. I usually stick with 30psi, but we'll see how it goes. Let me see if these photos will come up..Joe ps and one of the seats!
e24mpwr 02-02-2008, 04:15 PM Looks nice! I'm sure the car rides better!
joecautela 02-02-2008, 04:20 PM Tonight going to work will be the true test..70-75 on the pkwy into Queens and then local roads of a NYC variety. So they'll get everything except snow thrown at 'em!
jbd5015 02-02-2008, 06:39 PM Looks great!!!
That color combo is neat, what was the original interior of that car? Buffalo or cardinal?
-Jeff
joecautela 02-02-2008, 08:13 PM Jeff, the original was buffalo, seats were shot. The PO started the changeover in the back w/ seats and the side panels. I bought the front seats and got a shift boot to match. I'm kinda keeping my eyes open for fr. door skins to match, but for now it looks ok. It kinda grew on me, the red seats with brown carpet and trim and the blue paint. Kind of a mosh, and I'm sure that purists are horrified to see it, but it works for me!
sixseries 02-03-2008, 04:06 AM were the original seats buffalo nutria leather by any chance?
joecautela 02-03-2008, 09:37 AM I don't know what "nutria" is but the interior trim is/was all buffalo. The hide that was left on the seats looked the same.
Layne 02-03-2008, 11:02 AM Nutria is what that brown color is called.
Seeker 02-03-2008, 12:36 PM lookin good!
think those are the same wheels as on this car?

I've given thought about mixing interior color panels.. parts car is all black interior.. good car is black upper w/beige lower.
Thought about keeping the middle of the door panels beige and change everything else to black.. plus maybe dye my electric sport seats black too.. or recover them. seen someone on ebay selling vinyl replacement covers for e28 sport seats.. think they are the same AFAIK...
joecautela 02-03-2008, 01:49 PM Those wheels do look the same don't they? The front seats in my car are from a 5 series. Of course they don't fold forward but the electrics fold them up enough for me to squeeze in the back. And they are a ton more comfortable than those originals were...yeah the different colors are growing on me more and more everyday, what the hell?..why not? everybodys got tan..everybodys got black, so I'm just moddin a bit and trying to keep the cost within reason..
jbd5015 02-03-2008, 02:46 PM I just noticed this about your car joe. When it was federalized, they seemed to have only put sidemarkers on the rear of the car. I wonder why they only did that for the rear, and not on the front?

If it's like mine, they added dual filament bulbs to the corner lights so that no other front sidemarkers are needed.
jbd5015 02-03-2008, 04:06 PM Interesting. Sounds like its a better approach than putting in the sidemarkers for sure!

87M6 Chris 02-03-2008, 06:14 PM Joe, if you do decide to re-do your interior I would recomend Leatherique's products.
I re-did my whole lotus white interior last summer and the results are fantastic! Their leather dye which is really kind of a very flexable tough latex paint covers everything but still lets you see and feel the leather pores underneath and they can accurately match any colour you send them a sample of. I was also really impressed with their
re-juvenator oil, it took my California sun baked steering wheel with visable cracks
and made it feel almost new. I think I spent about $350-400 for everything and that includes $30 worth of lacqure thiner and paper towels to re-move the first layer of the old finish.
My spacers arrived the other day and I've got one more style 5 wheel to re-assemble
before I go tire shopping,BTW yours look great. Your wheels are one peice yes?
Chris
joecautela 02-03-2008, 06:49 PM Thanks guys! Chris, that's the name of the company I've been trying to remember! I finally located one speaker header pc to fill the gap in my back seat, but it is tan. I was thinking I'd dye it just like you said....My wheels are the one pc variety. Be careful when you have your tires mounted. On many tires theres a mark to have the tire aligned w/ the valve for mounting. The light spot. The young guy had the tires spun all over the place and he was doling out a bunch of weight for them. I got w/ the manager who had the guy break them back down and redo the mounting. Walah! very very small amounts of weight to balance those wheels. Just a thought for when you get yours done...
XTimServoX 02-03-2008, 07:14 PM i don't think i've ever seen a 6er with that exterior color, reminds me of an old GTO or Corvette, i like it.
joecautela 02-03-2008, 07:27 PM -Cosmos Blue
