The rear end of this car wobbles, bobs and shimmies even after new suspension components.

What is ideal fix with springs or shocks or combo?
Front end shocks are not part of the system, correct?

The previous owner of my 89 had Bilstein installed.

Hi, were there any springs added to the Bilstein shocks as I understand the rear will sag a bit lower. I was wondering if shocks only, then perhaps Konis would work better as you can adjust them.
Are you in Orlando area by any chance?

Koni rear are no longer available. Bilstein sports have ride height adjustability. What to buy depends on what you want the car to be for you.
Daily driver with no lowering at all
Slightly lower daily criver
lowered more and understand that you will give up some ride comfort

I would be happy with a daily driver with OEM ride height in my 89 automatic. After all, what do you do with under 200HP in a heavy coupe? Would like the ride sensation of a 740il. Will I need coil overs in the Bilstein sports and any other adjustments?

I also have a manual 87 model that I would like suggestions for shock change - more sporty feel; has no SLS.
Thanks,
JH

You would be surprised what can be done with a 208hp (rating of the 88-89 models)

for a 740iL ride forget Bilstein sports. Use either Bilstein Tourings with stock springs and you still won't quite get there, the e38 has years of research in the suspension the e24 chasis just doesn't have.

For a sportier ride, the Mtech springs with Koni fronts and Bilstein sports in the rear are a good combination

For the SLS 89 will I need only stock springs with the Bilstein sports or touring shocks and any kind of mounting modifications?

For the 87 standard non SLS, will the Bilstein sports just replace the OEM shocks without modifications?

Sorry for the delay. In my years since 74 dealing with BMWs, I don't have the time for this kind of work. I prefer Bilstein to any kind of shock because I have installed them and driven forever, and I do keep my cars forever. I have no interest in BOGE, KYB and WANTTOBE. There has been no need for me to change them. You can choose soft, middle of the road and sport. My choice has been middle for my 82 E24 and this was some 20 years ago. The only problem that I knew I had to eventually deal with is the springs had a few dots of rust on them thus questioning their integrity and this is a California car in South Florida. As I remember, the spring must be compressed as you do the front struts but only bit smaller without the cartridge insert. If you have the urge to be jumping up and down the road and tired at the end of the day, choose yourself the sport. Mine is not lowered in anyway that I can see and I rather not lower my cars. This prevents me from being able to wash the under carriage to remove salt and dirt that eventually land on the body after the first contact with rain after the car has been meticulously washed. If Bilstein wanted a commercial, there you have it.
I hope this helps.

Let me clear a few things up about Bilsteins, there are 3 types, Touring, HD and Sport.

The Touring are a twin tube style similar to the OEM Boge but slightly firmer.

The HD's are a single tube design as are the sport's and they both have the exact same valving for the same performance. The only difference between the HD's and the Sport's is that the Sport's are shorter to match up with lowering springs.

To summarize:
Use Touring for an OEM like ride
Use HD's for a firmer ride and stock springs
Use sport's for a firmer ride and lowering springs
