It seems as I have been jinxed and continuously get rock chips on my windshield. I have only had hte car 6 months but it seems to be a magnet for rock chips, I do mostly city driving with the occasional highway drive. I used to have a hood deflector on my old Honda and was wondering if there was something for the 328i? I know a clear bra is available but anythingt to help with the rock chips on windshield?

Not really - you sit too low to avoid SUV muck. Just have them filled before they start to crack.

I don't think it will stop chips. Hood deflector only blocks chips that land on the hood. It doesn't take care of the main problem of having small rocks on the road.

Try lobbying to your government to make mud guards manidatory. That should take care of part of the problem.

To make you feel better, I got my first rock chip less than 7 days of owning the car.

Wow...I hope I don't jinx myself but so far I have been lucky! I went ahead and got the windshield policy at the dealership because i was told that a rock chip can spread very easily on these cars and replacing a windshield with a rain sensor is muy expensive!

Actually, to replace a windshield for our car (aftermarket windshield) is not too bad. It costs about ~ $550 bucks CND (parts + labor) here. I am not sure how much it will cost in the states though.

Windshield policy? Isn't the windshield covered by your comprehensive part of your insurance! Seems to me they sold you some good ol' snake oil.

Nope, its true. There is an "insurance" type policy you can purchase up front. Its usually beneficial if you are going to be returnig the car via lease. If you return the car with a non-OEM windshield they will charge you for a new windshield at the dealer's price. If there are any chips or fills they charge you for it as well or take it off the amount they argeed to buy the car back from you.

I remember saying to myself, "I'm not going to be the sucker that pays for that" and promptly got a crack in my windshield a week later. My sales rep who I know pretty well just laughed and said "I told you they attract rocks."

Oh I'm sure it exists, ask Beer Googles, he'll even sell you beer insurance. I am just wondering what the benefit of such insurance is when a windshield crack is covered by your auto insurance. Seems redundant to me.

most chips can be repaired and some insurance companies will cover it 100%. worth a shot to call and find out. (worked for me in the past)

Interesting, and here I thought that normal wear on the vehicle was acceptable.

Also, I didn't know there was such a thing as 'aftermarket' windshields. Last time I replaced a windshield at a local place I was told they didn't exist (because the vast quantity of unique shapes, the OEM ones are pretty cheap anyway, and not being a performance or looks upgrade the market is pretty lean), and the badge on the windshield they installed matched the original.

I didn't even think you could get comprehensive auto insurance WITHOUT 100% windshield coverage anymore. Had mine replaced 3 times over the past 2 years without a penny out of pocket.

Try to file a claim with your insurance company, they'll agree to pay around $400 of the $900 it costs to replace at an authorized BMW center. If you don't do it there, my understanding is they will consider it aftermarket work and make you pay for a new one. Also, have you ever seen what it takes to replace a windshield? They have to take apart quite a bit of the engine compartment. There were some threads last year where someone watched a winshield repair company do this and they got totally lost as to how to take it apart or put it back together. I think he said it takes around 4 hours to complete.

There is a certain size for a crack beyond which it is not considered normal wear and you pay to replace the windshield. Forgot the size, but BMW sends you a kit to measure it before your lease ends, so you could get it fixed yourself instead of paying.

None of these "insurance" type policies are beneficial. People forget that insurance is for risks that you cannot afford to bear. I can afford to replace a windshield if I have to, therefore, it is financially a bad decision to buy insurance for this.

I have never seen a lease-end inspector check to see if all the glass is OEM. With a lease they are not buying the car back from you (they already own it) so I am not sure what you mean by your statement?

Sorry, this may have been different for me considering have Owners Choice (which I think is only available in 2 states) - but in my case, I own the car, yet its treated like a lease in regards to payments and such. Maybe that's why?
