View Full Version : obd1 s52 wont start
JohnnyScene 01-31-2008, 01:20 PM Hey guys i swapped a 98 s52 into my 8/95 m3
i transfered over all the sensors the harness intake manifold
its currently on 21.5 injectors and regular maf
I AM using a RED Label 413 (stock chip)
and i cut the ews #66 green cable out
the car cranks strong but dosnt start
ive done obd1 conversion's before and had this happen
turns out the dme was bad last time
but this time its a good dme
im wondering if having the crank posi senor in the front rather than rear is the problem??
or the 413 redlabel wont work!
ANY Insight please!!!
TIA
wulfgang 01-31-2008, 02:29 PM What do you mean about the crank sensor? OBDI uses the one in the front (outside of the block), while OBDII uses the better location inside the block. Which one are you using?
Btw, if both of the wheels have the same number of teeth, then I *think* you should be able to use either one, but we won't know until someone tries it.
JohnnyScene 01-31-2008, 02:39 PM its up front where it goes on a s50
garretvs 01-31-2008, 03:39 PM Have you hooked up a code reader to it??
wulfgang 01-31-2008, 04:34 PM Why are you using the stock chip? Even if it does start, you're going to be running really rich with those 21.5 lb/hr injectors.
garretvs 01-31-2008, 05:07 PM The airflow sensor, O2 sensor, temp sensors, etc that the DMU reads will keep the air/ fuel ratio correct at about 16:1 by just pulsing the injectors for a shorter time. No worries.
wulfgang 01-31-2008, 06:28 PM No, not at startup. During startup, the O2 sensor isn't hot enough to give good readings, so the DME uses built-in estimates (which will be wrong).
With 21.5 lb injectors, you're going to be sitting at 11.6:1 AFR, which is quite a ways from 14.7:1. I do not know if the DME can adapt that much even if you do get it started. I would suggest putting the 17 lb injectors back in there (if you have them) and try it again.
JohnnyScene 02-02-2008, 11:45 PM ok guys i checked
NO spark
NO fuel
Dme relay is good
Fuel Pump Relay is good
EWS green wire cut at #66 and #7 next to fuse box
I hear FUEL pump on and DME Hums
NO CEL (at any time start up/crank/ignition switched )
which i know its from the DME
My o2 is not plugged in that would it cause a disturbance?
since i converted to obd1 i had to buy the TMS intake /coolant temp sensor (2 into 1)
would that matter in which order they are plugged in
ONCE again i am running a STOCK 413 red label
no custom chip yet
any hlep!
TIA
wulfgang 02-03-2008, 07:10 PM For no spark and fuel, I would first suspect an EWS problem, then the DME, then the CAS.
Why would a DME hum? There's no 60 Hz in a car anywhere!
JohnnyScene 02-03-2008, 10:04 PM im going to test the dme on my friends 325i
admranger 02-09-2008, 10:51 PM I have a similar problem with a 2.8 into an OBD1 M3, except I get fuel to the cylinders. Stomp test yeilds 1281 which is something about memory full and no power to the DME. Pin 54 on the DME appears to need to be hot on Key on, but it isn't. I just can't find where the power dist block for that pin should be... Any help?
JohnnyScene 02-10-2008, 01:55 PM eaither blown relay or blown DME i had the same problem with my OBD1 m52
Shuasha 02-10-2008, 06:33 PM ok guys i checked

Wait, no CEL at any time? Not even with the ignition turned on but the car not cranking? Try reseating the chip in the DME, no CEL at anytime means that the ECU isn't reading the chip.
Bloodrunsdry 02-28-2008, 07:43 AM Any new info on this? I did the M50 swap it runs (runs like crap) but gets no cell at ALL...
JohnnyScene 02-28-2008, 11:17 AM yeah its done , if you dont have a CEL that means your computer isnt working or had the proper chip after that check for spark and fuel
Bloodrunsdry 02-28-2008, 12:43 PM hem ok. the dme came out of the running car so the chip should be fine. I get spark and fuel. I drive the car it just boggs out at high rpms and when its cold it will try to die untill its fully heated up. so i will try to figure out whats up with the dme then
JohnnyScene 02-28-2008, 04:36 PM maybe bad vacuum line, maf ,Tb boot or intake manifold
