View Full Version : E36 M3 C-Mod progress
m3ltw98 01-30-2008, 07:54 PM After seeing all the builds going up, I'd thought it would be a good idea to toss mine up and show some progress that has taken place over the past couple years. The car originally began life as a 1995 M3 LTW which was caged at cascade autosport out in Seattle. The previous owner installed a euro 3.2 with Grp N. ECU. From there, it went from a mild C-Mod car to a more prepared one. Here are the current specs:
- S54B32 built by Chuck Stickley puts down 340-350 on a dynojet.
- 5spd trans with 3.91 or 4.27 differential
- custom Ron Davis double pass radiator
- fluidyne under rad oil cooler
- RRT spec'd Ohlins SA suspension w/ rear coilovers, RRT front CAs, RRT tie rods, eibach front sway, RRT rear bearings and custom rear RCCAs
- AIM data acq and dash display
- AEM engine management (19xx box)
- Tilton overhung pedals with Rotora front/rear big brakes
- custom side exhaust
- 15 gallon ATL max-sport fuel cell
- Pennon GTR rear flares and E46 M3 grafted fronts
- carbon hood, decklid and lexan all around
- Pennon 60" carbon wing with custom made end plates
Below are pictures back from 2005 up till now which show the transformation the car has taken. More pictures will be taken as more progress is made and the AEM is tuned. Enjoy!

m332is 01-31-2008, 07:04 AM Hi Jerad,
I been busy over the winter too and we just added the Pennen widebody kit to our LTW. I was curious, what size wheels and tires you are running now?
We were on 250 640 18 Dunlops with 18X9 SSRs.

Hey Vince,
For the fronts, I am still running 18x9 SSR Comps w/ either 250 dunlops, 250 yoks or 265 pirellis. There is plenty of room for 18x10s up front. As for the rear, I am running 18x10 wheels with an offset of et25. Even with the 25 offset, I still need a 15mm spacer to keep the 280 dunlop off the inner wheel arch. Hope this helps and cant wait to see the car this season!

I do not have it in my possession yet as it is being custom made. It will be 26.5" across and 14.5" high and 3" thick. It will have the 90 degree mandrel bent inlet at the top like you see many C&R radiators. Once I receive it in the next week or so, I'll post up pictures of it.

I am excited for this year... hoping it makes it on track sooner than last year... I'd like to get more than 2 races this year
Thanks for the info... On the rears with the 25 mm offset and the 15 mm spacer, do you still have a bit of room on the outside edge with the 280s.
I was thinking about a 250 640 18 tire with a 10" wheel up front and an 11" wheel in the rear with either the 265 660 18 or the 280 660 18. If I go with a custom wheel, we can get the offset and width we need... of course I have 5 sets of SSRs 18X9 that need to go.

ALong 01-31-2008, 10:13 PM I know the first owner of this car and saw it when it was first done. It's a nice car. He bought the Engine from TC Kline, I dont know if had a real Group N ECU, I think it was an OE ECU with standard software. One thing I didnt like at the time is that it didnt have a dash bar in the cage (running from A-pillar to A-pillar), has one been added? Looks like you also took the Brembo's off. The first owner just used if for lapping days for about a half a season then sold it (really dont know why it was a cool car).

When we received it, it had a dash bar. I cut out the old one and Barry at RRT put in a straight one for the overhung pedal supports. Brembos were the first thing to come off the car as the pedal feel was absolutely horrible.

Yea, webshots is doing maintenance right now. They'll be back up shortly. Majority of the work has been done by myself w/ the exception of the internal motor work so I save big-time on labor. If you're ever going to be in South Jersey or Philadelphia area, let me know and stop by.
jmitro 01-31-2008, 11:07 PM of course I have 5 sets of SSRs 18X9 that need to go.
What's the advantage of 18s instead of 17s? Tire availability? I might be interested in some 18x9s. Have been using 17s since I was IP this past year, but changing to CM.
B.Watts 02-01-2008, 01:08 AM What's the advantage of 18s instead of 17s? Tire availability?
17" slicks are hard to find.
ALong 02-01-2008, 01:06 PM "17" slicks are hard to find"
Actually you just need to know where to look. A lot of European series still use 17" slicks so they are available. Yokohama, Dunlop, Avon, Goodyear Europe, and Michellin have them.
B.Watts 02-01-2008, 01:39 PM Like I said, hard to find.
I'm well aware that they can be found, but when you need a set of tires the Tuesday before a race weekend, good luck sourcing tires that aren't used in any US pro or major club series (i.e. PCA club racing drives a lot of what is stocked in Dunlop, Michelin, and Yoko by various race tire suppliers). When you have a tire that needs replacing at the track, Bob Woodman or Sasco doesn't have a trailer full of 17" Dunlops, Yoks, and Pirelli's. Not only that, but the 17" sizes are often more focused on the 230-240 width rather than the 250-280 that most of us run.
With 18" wheels, you can also take advantage of 1-2 heat cyle take-offs from Grand-Am, ALMS, Ferrari Challenge, PCA, etc.
ALong 02-01-2008, 01:49 PM Your Tomato, my Tomatoe...
Yes your probably not going to get any at the track. Having said that, I usually get all my tires at the beginning of the season, and ordering tires and having to wait two weeks (or a couple of days if you want to spend the $$$) is not a big deal.
You shouldnt go to the track without having sufficient tires lined up ahead of time, counting on the trackside tire vendor to have your sizes is a disaster waiting to happen.
Most tire suppliers, if you get enough of the same tire from them, will start stocking them, even if they are an odd size
m3ltw98 02-04-2008, 02:18 PM UPDATE!
Well I walked in the door from class and a big box was awaiting me from Ron Davis radiators. It came out amazing and the welds are absolutely beautiful. This is a custom double pass radiator to my specs and total was 570 which cannot be beat. I highly recommend talking to Dennis at Ron Davis as he was a huge help with getting me setup. Anyway, enough chatter and on with the pictures.

m3ltw98 02-07-2008, 11:43 PM Got some work done this week with the rad and finished up the oil cooler cradle as well. I have it fully welded in and painted. Tomorrow, the aluminum u-bend comes in for the top hose of the radiator and then that is done. Pulled the brake pedal assembly as well and dropped down MC size for better modulation and will remount the reservoirs to the pass side. Below are pics of the progress.

m3ltw98 02-08-2008, 11:59 PM The aluminum u-bend came in today from Burns stainless and got the top hose of the radiator plumbed in. The stock lower hose works with the measurements I gave to Dennis at Ron Davis. Just waiting on word from Felix about the AEM race box and we'll get moving on getting the car running again.

I use to run the OEM motorsport bar but sold it back in the summer. I never test fit it with the CSL airbox installed. I do know that Chuck runs the same bar w/ the OEM CSL airbox. If you are using the stock ICV, it may hit. I dont run that and as you can see on the fuel rail, the opening is welded shut.

Thanks Ken. The only thing holding it back last year was the questionable engine management system. That should be solved this year. Decided to tie the fuel cell cradle into the frame rails like Steve did. Still have two more pieces to make and weld in place. Also picked up a nice sheet metal brake for making clean bends and angles in brackets, gussets, etc.. Here are pictures from todays progress.

Steve J. 02-12-2008, 07:15 PM I hope it was a sheet metal BRAKE and not a sheet metal BREAK, otherwise you should return it and get one thats not broken lol
Looking good...imitation is the greatest form of flattery :)
m3ltw98 02-13-2008, 07:48 PM More progress made today. Just have one more piece to weld in and the fuel cell cradle will be finished. The sheet metal brake has paid for itself already with these bends.

Thanks steve, because I didn't know what a brake looks like. I hope you didn't buy that from summit and over pay by 40%. I was hoping for non normal sources on a brake since the OP is a 'c-mod racer on a budget' not a 's-mod racer with a large tool budget'.
But, since you posted that pic. Do you have that brake? Is it well built?
Steve J. 02-13-2008, 08:59 PM Thats the actual brake he bought, ass. :stickoutt He did not buy it from Summit, he got a good deal.
I'm saving for a Box&Pan brake.
As of this week, I am officially BM!

No more cockpit adj swaybar, and I'm going to tone down the underbody aero to be legal.
Plus its less money./time....the car is going to be silly fast, so simpler the better. More money available for Bosch ABS M4 :)

I bought the brake at a local sheet metal supply warehouse. They have huge quantities of sheet metal, aluminum, tubing, round stock, flat stock etc.. I got a 4x10' sheet of 20 gauge steel for $30, and they cut it in half so it fit in the back of my truck. I got the brake for 150 and it is pretty well built. It can go up to 12 gauge which is more then enough for anything on the race car. Makes nice tight bends too.
m3ltw98 02-14-2008, 01:05 AM Jared you've got a brake? I need to bend something - maybe when business settles down with both your and my build?
Not a problem Jon. Let me know what you need bent and we can work out a time for you to come down.
m3ltw98 02-14-2008, 12:01 PM Just finished welding in the last gusset to the fuel cell cradle. Spent most of the time removing the undercoating where the sheet metal met the chassis. Just need to throw some self etching primer on and paint and the fuel cell will be reinstalled. Next up is to finish connecting the brakes and re-bleed and the car will be ready for the new engine management.

jdholder 02-14-2008, 12:20 PM Very nice car!

They are the reservoirs for:

Rear Brake Master Cyliner
and

Yup, the can go directly onto the master cylinder but I don't have enough room w/ the overhung type pedals. Makes it easy to pour fluid in them when bleeding as well with a person in the driver seat.
B.Watts 02-14-2008, 12:26 PM I have a noob-type question... what are the three bottles on the dash for?
They are either reservoirs for the two brake master cylinders and the clutch cylinder, or they hold liquors and mixers that can then be fed into the driver's helmet with a straw so that the post-race party can start as soon as the checkered flag comes out.

328ischef 02-17-2008, 09:22 PM Hey
looking very nice. The brake is a good investment, I am fotunate enough to have use of one at work. Nice work on the cradle, ive been staring at my spare tire well with a very similar idea in mind. Hope to get to see the car in person this year.

jmitro 02-17-2008, 10:50 PM nice. I'm envious of your fabricating skills. what did you do with the space previously occupied by the stock fuel tank?

Its just open. Havent had much time to close the gap in.
98slvrm3 02-18-2008, 01:54 PM This may be a newb question but how do you cut/stamp those holes in the reinforcement brackets? Ive seen builds with these in Japanese cars and the advantage over a plain reinforcement plate is tremendous. Flex is greatly reduced and weight is reduced, the best of both worlds.

There is a specific tool for the dimpled holes. You can find the punch/flare tools on tricktools.com I got the cell reinstalled today and bolted down. Will replumb it tomorrow using all -6 braided lines instead of the socketless crap I had on there before.

328ischef 02-18-2008, 08:30 PM looks good. How many gallons is that?
What would you rate the trade-off between putting the cell lower for better center of gravity versus having it a bit higher enabling better airflow below it, and possible use of a rear diffuser?
keep up the good work, looks great

It is a 15 gallon cell with the high pressure black box in the cell. I chose the fuel cell basically to know exactly how much fuel I have in there at any given time and to prevent against any fuel starvation problems. It also worked out as I utilized the stock tank location to route my side exhaust.
m3ltw98 02-20-2008, 06:22 PM Nothing too special but I re-did all the fuel lines using -6 braided line. I also bought the Koul Tool for assembling the -6 hose ends and it is simply amazing. No more struggling with little frayed ends. I literally had the hose pushed in the red receiver in a matter of seconds. Also relocated the peterson fuel filter to underneath the car. Here is a trunk shot with it all wrapped up. It is ready for the dyno :redspot

Never had a problem with the inline filter getting clogged. Usually clean it after every race weekend as a safety precaution. I do know that after each race weekend, I'll pump out the remaining fuel in the cell. Sunoco recommends this as their race fuels will eventually eat away the foam inside the cell.
m3ltw98 02-26-2008, 10:11 PM Cleaning things up in the engine bay as I await word from Felix. Got the valve cover powder-coated wrinkle black and the place got it done in 3-4 hours. Came out amazing. Just waiting for the vanos delete plate from Chuck and it'll be back together.

m3ltw98 03-05-2008, 12:28 AM Finished up the right side window net install yesterday. Had to pull the dash to weld the post to the dashbar. Used a threaded bung and welded it to the 3/4" round tube. The net is from HMS and is the race craft brand. Highly recommend as the buckle and ratchet system are very nice and beefy.

Here is the best picture I could get. 2 L brackets are welded to the firewall for the pedals to sit on. Then 2 pieces of flat stock steel are welded from the L brackets to the dash bar for extra rigidity. Also, the engine side of the firewall is reinforced with a plate for added stiffness. Hope the picture helps.

See ya soon Jared :buttrock
m3ltw98 03-28-2008, 07:03 PM Well, it took some time but the car was finally delivered to Felix by myself on Wednesday. He will pull the entire TEC3R system out and completely rewire the AEM race box in. I will post videos of the tuning in process when the time comes. Hoping to make a test day at Summit mid-April. May have a few tricks with the AEM and having a pit lane speed button. Here is one picture I snapped before loading it on the trailer. Those are 18x10s all around with room to spare BTW.

The same one. I call it the race box even though it is touted as the universal ems. After Evosports record with it and hearing Felix say it is a great unit, I figure I'll follow their advice and experience. Too much money down the drain dealing with the TEC3R.
m3ltw98 05-14-2008, 09:45 PM Will be picking the car up this Friday or Saturday. Preliminary numbers have been in the 350 range so far. Will have all new shots once it is back home and looked over before the first test day. Until then, here is some eye candy that will be installed shortly.

Massive Lee 05-21-2008, 06:41 PM I'll let Jared disclose his secret stash :D. I recognize he had a very clever idea. All I can say is that they are a great bargain available at 66% off and that I may know where to "find" adapters for e36M3s and e30 M3s struts... :devillook Very excited to see pictures of the whole kit mounted. That's about all I can say :rolleyes
B.Watts 05-21-2008, 09:52 PM We run NASCAR Brembo calipers on our car as well...they are easy to find down here and priced a little better than calipers marketed at sports cars. Our front caliper/rotor is the REAR caliper/rotor for a Winston Cup road course car. :)
I like the monoblocs though!
m3ltw98 05-21-2008, 10:02 PM For all those interested in the calipers, I stumbled upon them on ebaymotors back in February for 900. I couldnt pass them up and got in touch with Lee at Massive Brakes instantly for custom brackets. He delivered absolutely amazing radial mounts in 4 weeks time. The rotors are 332x32mm stoptechs paired with their aerohats. I can also run custom 35mm thick rotors by removing a set of shims from the radial mounts.
After picking the car up today, I got it home and put it on jack stands to check everything out and put the new brake setup on. It was a good thing I did. On the dyno, the front diff bolt snapped. Luckily, I dropped the diff and was able to remove the remaining portion of the bolt. Also installed the CSL dipstick which sits well below the carbon airbox. Here are some pictures of the AEM install, brakes, dipstick and wiring. First test day is Monday the 26th at Pocono with the Ferrari guys.

Steve J. 05-22-2008, 11:18 PM We'll see how they do Monday. Pocono long course, boring, but perfect to test the car with the new tuning and brakes. Two super long straights to feel out the cars tuning at WOT, nice small infield to test out partial throttle, and one HUGE braking zone from about 130 down to 30 lol
RedE30iS 05-22-2008, 11:44 PM Stunning work man. It's incredible seeing these kind of builds come together. Keep it up, and definitely post some full pics up.
robweenerpi 05-23-2008, 10:41 AM Those are beautiful brakes! Do you have plans to run long enduros? Those pads will last quite a while!!
Depending on the company you can actually get rotors in varying thickness for the application. This allows you to run even wider pads for enduros. With the ZR-33's I can outfit a thinner 29mm rotor and thicker 06 pads. For a normal club race or street application we put on a 32mm thick rotor to increase life. We use the thinner versions on the Challenge cars to save mass. Most of the higher end brakes will allow this type of interchange.
Massive Lee 05-23-2008, 10:57 AM Jared's pads are already 1" thick (25mm) which is a lot of material. Usually, racers who do enduros will pick a pad that might have a bit less outright grip but much longer duration as driving for a 3 or 4 hour stint is usually less aggressive than a 20 minute sprint anyway. But considering that most AP Racing and StopTech kits out there use a 16mm pad including a 4mm backing (leaving 12mm pad material), a 25mm endurance pad (with 21m pad material) is quite an improvement.
In term of total rotor width, let's not forget it includes air gap (good for cooling) and friction wall thickness (good for heat burst absorbtion). Thinning one or another will influence the rotor's capacities. Nascar uses rotors that are 1.5" (38mm) thick to gain in both departments. Plus major cooling ducts aiming at the rotor's center, plus at the caliper itself to help dissipate heat.
m3ltw98 05-23-2008, 07:43 PM Got the car all buttoned up today and did an alignment to wrap everything up. I also decided to take my brothers mashaw E46 style bumper off his race car to use. It already has a nice underpanel to the sway bar for protecting the oil cooler and mounts rock solid. Just snapped these 2 pictures after cleaning everything up. The bumper needs some tweaking though.

yea....MAShaw stuff
i think it might sit a bit lower than the e36 bumper.....may just be an illusion though
m3ltw98 05-24-2008, 12:30 PM your car looks great. does the E46 style bumper cover sit lower to the ground than the E36? and is that MAShaw's splitter?
It sits about 1/2-3/4" lower then the E36 M3 bumper. The E36 M3 bumper with a max velocity splitter, would not clear my oil cooler cradle. The Mashaw piece slides right underneath it. The splitter is also from mashaw and is reinforced with alumalite so it does not bend down at speed.
m3ltw98 06-04-2008, 11:35 PM Just wanted to post an update... The track day at Pocono went very well. The driveability of the car is damn near stock. The power from 5700-7800 is downright scary. Very pleased with the AEM 1902 unit thus far. This time last year, we were scratching our heads screwing around with the TEC3R. The brakes felt absolutely amazing. The downsize of MCs to 13/16" front and 7/8" rear has helped the modulation and overall balance of the car tremendously. I was able to brake late for the infield turn and never came close to locking up or feeling like the car was unstable. The DTC60 pads have a great feel to them as well. Very good initial bite with a quite smooth release for trail breaking. First race will be June 21,22 at Summit Point for Hyperfest. Hope to have in-car footage from that event that I will post on youtube.

maxxfish 06-05-2008, 07:22 AM Looking good, J!
I just ran my first track day with the new Hawks and was also really impressed. I had DTC-70s up front and DTC-60s in the back, and it was a nice balanced bias (UUC Alcons front and rear with no ABS).
See you at Hyperfest (my first race my my "new" car, too!)

I found the monoblock brembos on ebay from a NASCAR team. I then had Massive Lee on the forums make me custom radial mounts to fit 332x32mm stoptech rotors. I believe there is a front set on ebay right now if you search. I just type in "brembo calipers" and they're usually near the bottom of the page. Thanks
dsycks 06-07-2008, 07:48 PM May I make a request to get a pic of the front wheels mounted? I assume this would need an 18" wheel which is something I fear I am going to end up having to do to get the brakes I need. I would hope to find a XXL caliper that will fit a rotor small enough to fit under 17s but by going to 18s I could start taking advantage of some take offs.
I swear... this is not a hobby for folks who hate to spend money.

I'll snap a picture tomorrow when I unload the car from the trailer. With the current rotor setup (332x32mm) 17" wheels should fit but of course with the use of spacers to clear the thick caliper.
