View Full Version : condensation in headlights
heemry328i 01-29-2008, 08:58 PM i just bought a brand new 08 3 series few weeks ago and during the first couple of days i would see condensation build up inside the lenses of my headlights. i brought it in the bmw the following week and they told me its normal. Today i took a look at my headlights again and this time there was even more build up. So i was wondering do any of you guys have the same problem or is it just me and bmw is bsing me saying its normal.

I've never seen condensation in my headlights (HIDs). I think they're BSing you...jeez...why do service departments do this?

Never seen it in an E92 but my Corvette has it. GM is going to replace the headlight so dont let BMW do anything less!
aftp302 01-29-2008, 10:07 PM I had this on my headlights the first couple of days after I bought it last year. It went away in a day or two and hasn't returned since.
heemry328i 01-29-2008, 10:58 PM yea I'm pretty heated since the car doesn't even have plates yet and this is happening. The first time they told me its not that big of a problem due to the fact that the condensation was drying up. So I decided to take some pictures just in case. Yea and I told them that its definitely not normal since toyotas hondas etc. Dont have this on a brand new car.

same thing here, had it for the 1st week - yet to return
Takashi 01-30-2008, 03:24 AM Park your car in the sun with the light shinning on your headlights. A good heat from the sun should get rid of the condensation.

Not a permanent fix though.

Hello "heemry328i":
Not sure if this will work on an E9x but I found the "trick" for my X5. Get a shop vac. Locate the rubber vent tube running from the back of the headlight assembly (usually pointed down). Make sure the hose from the shop vac is a loose fit around the vent hose (do not want to implode the headlight). Turn on the shop vac, go drink a few beers and check after an hour or so. It should have removed the condensation.
Worked fine on the X5 and so far, it has not returned.
Actually, this does happen on hondas, toyotas, vws, etc. It's a fairly common thing. Sometimes a warm day in the sun will clear them up (for good), sometimes not. Sometimes going through the car wash makes it worse. Just depends on how bad it is, the state of the seals, etc.

My last two bimmers with xenon lights both had it and BMW says its normal.
Beer Goggles 01-30-2008, 02:50 PM Most cars these days have headlight units that are ventilated to the atmosphere so they are designed to get moisture in them. If it's excess it might be a problem.
Cslinger 01-30-2008, 03:05 PM Most dealers clean their cars with high pressure washers and it is not all that hard to get a bit of fluid up in there. Mine had that condensation issue at purchase and for about a week or two after and then cleared up. No problems now, rain, shine, cold or hot.

StephenNg 01-31-2008, 09:15 PM It is normal. Most of those headlight does have a vent hose. If the hose is plug, moisture will be trap inside. I have the smiliar issue on my 997 fog light. Check your vent hose and make sure it is not plug
Ty Vil 01-31-2008, 11:25 PM Mine had this problem the first week I had it. It soon went away.
heemry328i 01-31-2008, 11:36 PM wheres this vent hose located?
tsweers89 02-01-2008, 12:01 AM you got a warrenty. use it
rlu1338 02-04-2008, 10:20 PM I took delivery of my Cabrio on Saturday; had a quick spin right afterwards in the rain and noticed condensation in the headlights. I called my salesman immediately and was told it's normal due to the vent holes. Problem is more noticeable under wet conditions...such as rain, humidity, etc...
heemry328i 02-05-2008, 12:20 AM yea I just wished they didn't make that a "normal" thing
Coady 02-05-2008, 01:30 AM I have a simmilar problem with my E92, except it's not in the headlights but the driving lamps. I think my problem may be the extreme low temps we get here (-20 to -40C over the past week) and its causeing the moisture in the air to freeze in my lamps.
heemry328i 02-05-2008, 05:01 AM that's damn cold
yakitiyak 02-08-2008, 09:10 AM I had a little condensation on the right head light (really tiny on the upper left hand corner) and it disappears when the sun hits it. I've had my car for a year (2 winter cycles) and I noticed it a handful of times.
heemry328i 02-08-2008, 04:55 PM do you guys think it'll cause yellowing/fogging of the lenses later in the future?

It should not. If it ever happen, let's hope it will happen before the warrenty expires.
RChacon 02-08-2008, 09:46 PM it happen to my 328i on the first month.
