View Full Version : NOT happy with ebay HIDs (mini review)

I got the 5000k kit from the same ebay seller as others on the board. The packaging was great and I was impressed with the ease of the install. They are too blue and definitely not as bright as one would expect HIDs to be. I have a b5.5 passat with OEM HID for comparison. Sure they are brighter than OEM, but that isn't saying much. I also think they have a lot of glare when viewed from above the cutoff. The pictures people have posted are ~10-15ft away from a wall and mine are in fact very bright at this range. The performance really falters over distance though. When the beam is being cast over 50-100ft as it is on the road it is much dimmer. The passat by comparison will throw a clean, bright beam line very far away and the light is very white.

So I guess don't expect OEM quality HID for $70. If you want the HID "look" and moderate improvment in light output these fit the bill. If you are after pure white light output these are not recommended by me. :nono

I think I'm going to try out some Xtreme White bulbs for comparison.

If someone wants to save some cash and try them out send me a PM and I'll cut you a deal. It is the 9006 bulb kit for OEM projectors.

Ya i decided to stay away from those. A guy at my work got some ebay ones for his jetta and they just look blue and ricey. I went with the apexcone kit 9006 5000k. These kits seem to have good reviews and will post pics this weekend suppose to get them on friday.

I got that kit; it may not be the best, but for the money, I think it's pretty great. It's much brighter than OEM lights, and looks a whole lot cooler, too. Having said that, there are two problems;
from time to time, but not every time, the OBC throws Low Beam message on the dash; if I jerk the head lights switch up too fast, the headlights will sometimes fail to go on. When this happens, all I have to do is put the switch back in the off position, then turns the lights back on, and everything is OK. This did cost me $75, so for the money, I'm pretty happy.

The McCulloch kit is higher quality at $280 for the set. I'm running that and have been very happy.

possibly the problem is the US projectors themselves?

I don't know why yours is acting up that way. But mine is crystal clear, and I can't ever see myself driving a non-HID equipped vehicle. It feels like the head lights aren't even on after having HIDs.

+5000.....K :)

The McCulloch kit is very nice, high quality, and doesn't give the LowBeam message. I've had mine for a while, and I love it! My only regret is that I went with 6000Ks instead of the more potent 3200 lumen 5000Ks. Still a fantastic setup.

Has anyone tried an eBay kit for things like fog lamps? That's something I might try since I'm already running a good quality setup for the Lows.

I love my prolumens. As far as oncoming glare is concerned.... There is no way to fix that unless you do a cutoff shield like I did. Our cars weren't designed for HID's

As nice as my prolumens are with cutoff though.... I have bought TSX projectors and am going to retrofit them. I am obsessed with perfection unfortunately. My existing HID's in the euro smilies with my custom cutoff are brighter and sharper than my friends 01 Audi A6 with factory HID's but when I got passed by an Acura TSX the other night I was what they should look like

Did your old shields fine a new home yet?

If not lemme know, I may be interested in them. I picked up some Depo's for the new e34 and I am going to throw an HID kit in there.

yeah, sorry for not being clear.
You know how blacked out the touring is...
I just see no need for white colored fogs, and don't want yellow lamin-x or glass breaking up the monochromatic black look.

How about the Euro Smileys, are they cool to run with HIDs?
