View Full Version : How are you US guys passing emissions? Noob S52 01-29-2008, 04:38 AM I have a 99 coupe and I want an S50B32 in it for the street. With your car having an OBD-II port, you're probably better off going for an S54 swap. Not sure what the rules are in GA, but even in CA you'd pass smog as it's a newer, CARB legal motor. MoonLite 01-29-2008, 03:46 PM Know somebody....I do my own inspection's no problem passing inspection... M Dizzle 01-29-2008, 05:05 PM my more or less stock S50B30 OBDI passes easily. prob would pass in CA too. 94is 01-29-2008, 08:18 PM I legalized my first motor swap (US S50), so I get sent to a "Test Only" station every two years. It has become rather difficult to find someone willing to pass a car at a test only location, but I have been fortunate enough to find someone. Hopefully they're still there by September/October when I'm due to smog again. :help Btw, I pay $200 or $250 (can't remember which) to pass. JamesM3M5 01-30-2008, 10:31 PM My US 95 M3 passes the roller-dyno test easily with the S50B32 and full stock Euro cats. OBD2 cars do not hit the rollers, so you're screwed unless you do an S54 swap and have it 100% OBD2 compliant. SG_M3 01-31-2008, 01:23 AM My US 95 M3 passes the roller-dyno test easily with the S50B32 and full stock Euro cats. Same here. heavyfoot2990 02-06-2008, 01:57 AM When I first got my car, I was wondering how the hell I passed with no cats or O2 sensors, then realized I was missing two exhaust bolts and had a leak, letting in clean air at idle. This year, I failed hydrocarbons at 260ppm (max allowable 220ppm) (CO at 0.25% out of 1.2%). So I gave myself a considerable exhaust leak (loosened the exhaust at the headers and put one of the nuts in between the flanges to make sure it stays 1cm apart) and I passed at 90ppm. Granted, when I failed Friday the temp was 30F, and when I passed today, it was 79F (come visit Memphis if you don't believe me). Anyway, I'm sure this contributed, because without O2s I've got to be running really rich at idle in the cold. SG_M3 02-06-2008, 02:20 AM why are you running without the o2's hooked up? e46alsaffar 02-07-2008, 12:39 AM They are in, plugging the holes, but they're cut. That's just the way the previous owner had it, and I haven't gotten around to buying/putting in new ones and assume those are toast. The car doesn't use them in open-loop anyway does it? So they only help at idle? Please let me know if I'm mistaken. btw, I have an s50b30. Anyway, if you don't want to run chemicals in your car, and it runs well now, just fails, try going on a warmer day, or giving yourself an exhaust leak. e46alsaffar 02-07-2008, 12:41 AM oh, that was me (heavyfoot) posting from my friend's computer |
