I cant seem to find whether the 2008 328i comes with an auto dimming rear view mirror as standard or if this is an option I would have to add. Does anyone know?

Also, I just placed my order for the car, so if its something I need to add, does anyone know whether it can be added after the fact by the dealer and how much it would cost?

thanks

I wouldn't take an auto dimming mirror if they gave it to me. I've had one in my 2001 wagon and if it works I've never noticied. I've been to the dealer a number of times and he says there nothing they can do about it. They claim it works as it should. Get the manual one, it DOES work.

i wish i had a conventional rear view mirror. i have been disappointed in the performance of my auto dimming mirror. it doesn't react fast enough or dim sufficiently. save your money. as to the compass, i am a dude, therefore never ask for directions or need a compass. :)

Go on ebay and get a Land Rover or a Range Rover rearview mirror with compass and auto-dimming. They are made from the same supplier of BMW auto dimming and compass rearview mirrors ;)

I, too, don't care for the auto-dimming feature. Is there even a manual one available?

Yes there is. Not sure about the US, but here it is not standard, it comes as a standalone option or part of the premium package (at least for the 323/328 I believe). I find it very useful at night and works flawlessly IMO.

I love the auto-dimmer. If you have to additional option of side mirror dimming, then that's just gravy. I hate getting blinded by rear headlights, especially from high-riding SUVs.

It was an option that came with the Premium Package on my car. My friend was able to buy one from the dealer for around $450-500 and the dealer installed it for him.

I too find it to work flawlessly. I had the auto-dimming mirror in my '02 C230 and loved it so I was adamant that this car have it too, and it was standard with the premium package so everything worked out fine.

I will say that the auto dimming mirror on our 2007 CR-V is very disappointing by comparison. It tends to stay dimmed even during the day which is frustrating, and when it dims at night it seems to go too dark. I would attribute the problem to the factory tint on the rear windows, but I had all the windows on my C230 tinted and the auto-dimming mirror still worked well on it.

WERE YOUR WINDOWS TINTED? I HAVE HEARD THAT CERTAIN TYPES OF TINT CAN CAUSE POOR PERFORMANCE OF OPTICAL RELATED FEATURES. NOT SURE HOW MUCH TRUTH IS BEHIND THAT. ANYONE ELSE HEARD THE SAME THING?

Exactly! It's part of the Premium Package and it's amazing!

The only thing I miss about the manual rear view mirror is being able to fold it down to see the kids in the back, but that is a minor issue.
