Hi all
Cool site you guys got here. Iam a complete newbie to Beemer tuning & have a UK spec M60B40 E34 540i engine 119,000 miles on it (with a six speed manual box) that I want to uprate. So iam looking for some advice on what is & isn’t possible regarding tuning of this engine. Iam thinking about the following options (as iam said iam a newbie so please bear with me). & what the costs would be:
What parts what would the costs of the parts be & who are the company’s that sell at the best prices to do the following?
Uprate engine to 4.5L
Uprate engine to 5L
Uprate engine to 6L
I assume i would need forged pistons etc ?
Also does any company’s make turbo or supercharger kits for this engine? Iam looking to increase the torque & bhp, torque being the most important.
Thanks for looking & hope someone can help, I travel to the USA often so I can buy parts & bring them home no problem.
Cheers
Billy

when you say "upgrade" to a bigger displacement engine, im confused at what your asking. Do you want to bore and stroke your engine to a greater displacement or do you want to put in a physically bigger engine. Im pretty sure you cant bore your engine to 6l and an engine swap to a 6.0l v12 engine from say a 760 would not be a smart option. Your best bet if you had the money would be to put some sort of forced induction kit on.

If it were up to me i would not spend the time to bore and stroke your engine for you will get less power for ALOT of money. Your best bet should be to go to the Forced Induction section of this site and ask some questions there. To FI a 540 im guessing its gonna cost upwards of $10,000 for labor and the kit.

This is the largest M6x engine I've seen, in terms of displacement:
http://www.noellemotors.de/5_2l_engine_basis_BMW_M60_M62_B44.267+M5630defb305 .0.html
Any larger has been a M7X motor.
The real question is, what are you going to do for tuning?
Also, I'm sure the cost is insanely high, as most of the Euro strokers I've seen were in the 10k+ Euro range. ESS does make a SC kit for the M60, but it is a centri-type, so it kinda sucks, only hitting max boost at redline and all. Dinan also made a SC kit for the M60, but it has sicne been discontinued, so any set you may come accross will need to be rebuilt, more than likely.
Overall, the M60 is not a good platform to start from for big numbers, unless you have an equally big pocketbook.
Also, here is a thread where the concept of converting a M62 to run OBD-I is considered.
