View Full Version : Cost Saving Homelink
gurmukhbhogal 01-27-2008, 10:58 PM :alright:alrightbmwI have always wanted a homelink in my car but never wanted to pay the kind of money it costs to buy one. Although it's not much but here is an alternative I came up with. Picture is worth a thousand words. I picked up a sunroof switch for next to nothing from a wrecker and put it in wnere the air vent was in the roof panel. Now I have two sunroof switches, but, this one I connected to my Mastercraft door opener contacts by soldering wires number 5 and 6. Taped it behind the roof panel, assembled it back, and there's my HOMELINK. It works great.
The only drawback is that the button doesn't light up at night when I switch on the lights, because the the Mastercraft has its own battery power. There are three other wires, no. 2,3,& 4. I am sure when connected (somehow) will do the trick without iterfering with the existing sunroof operation. Thats where the bimmerfoeum guys ingenueity comes in. Any solutions or suggestions?
Landerholm 01-27-2008, 11:17 PM Air vent? I think mine is a Microphone for the phone.
I had no idea homelinks were so expensive... I just keep my door opener in that small ash trey behind the shifter, its very small.

Microphone? You think? Have you ever looked what's behind that panel? The answer is NO, you haven't.
m5james 01-28-2008, 01:23 PM Pretty lippy for a newbie aren't ya? It appears on your base model 528 that your car didn't come w/ Homelink or the factory cellphone, but for those of us that did....that is in fact a microphone for the BMW hands free kit.

racerx0911 01-28-2008, 02:04 PM i got my homelink from ebay for 60 bucks...
good job though...
e39dream 01-28-2008, 04:16 PM lol @ thread. There was no e39 that had an air vent up there. Some base e39s that are not pre-wired for phone system had a blanking plate with holes- AKA air vent.
As long as it works for you I guess. Be happy you have a garage to pull into.
I like this solution much better:

First off, you DON'T NEED TO YELL nor do you need to talk to people like they're idiots when in fact the uninformed newbie is you. I may come off as an ass to a LOT of people, but at least I know what i'm talking about....most of the time :)
