View Full Version : removing/replacing chrome body and window trim
Millenium E39 01-27-2008, 10:04 PM I tried doing a search but didn't really find anything to fitting.
I have a 2000 528I with the black body molding with chrome trim, as well as chrome window trim. I really like the 2001 look with the color keyed body molding and black window trim. Has anyone tried to update their 2000 with black window trim, color keyed molding? Is there a way to at least remove the chrome?
boomshakalaka 01-27-2008, 10:15 PM I dont know how to do it, but I know I love my blacked out trim. I have a 99 540i6, maybe all of them came sans chrome? Either way Im glad, I hate chrome, looks so trashy to me unless its on a classic car. Gotta black out my kidneys too.

Don't like the chrome, eh?
It looks really good on some e39's, but if you arent happy, you have 3 options:
1. Replace whole trim... $$$$
2. Paint Chrome trim black...
3. Blackout tape them bad boys...
Good luck!!!

waapples 01-27-2008, 11:23 PM i also hate chrome trims in general.
i would definitely replace the f/r bumper & door moldings, since they seem pretty easy; but i would look into painting the window trims to black color since it would be much cheaper.
good luck!
FP5241 01-27-2008, 11:32 PM I definatley love my shadowline trim, but I will admit, on the right car, chrome can look downright sexy. Seeing Jerry's E39 this weekend was one reminder of how good it can look...
grahamggg 01-27-2008, 11:33 PM hmm i wonder if you could have a body shop paint the trim on the doors/fenders/bumpers body color for cheap?
FP5241 01-27-2008, 11:39 PM They would probably charge alot for removal and prepping them...
waapples 01-27-2008, 11:51 PM the f/r bumper & door moldings won't be smooth since they are 2 pieces, chrome & black trim.
FP5241 01-27-2008, 11:55 PM Unless he just get's trim from a sport... anybody got some spare trim layin around???

There are parts numbers in this DIY thread.

He doesn't specify where these part numbers are coming from. Anyone know?
gumbi4u 01-28-2008, 11:15 PM I have a sport and it didnt come with shadow trim which makes me sad. I tried the tape...it looked great but didnt have the patience to complete it and make it look perfect so i ripped it off. I will be painting mine this spring. Painting is best but the trim itself will run you about 240 shipped. Replacing it has crossed my mind plenty but have heard horror stories about wind noise after the swap. The 03 540i sports came with a glossy trim which looks great but is rape in the price dept. Painting it yourself will save you alot of lube.
jamesdc4 01-28-2008, 11:25 PM Thanks, Gumbs.
