View Full Version : '99 M3 Manual Coupe Black/Black in SE PA
Selling my '99 M3 in preparation for an '08 Jetta TDI. I drive about 250 miles a day on average and the gas is kicking my ass. The Jetta doesn't come out until September, but it may take that long for this to sell so here goes. I'm just listing here and driving around with a For Sale sign. If it sells before September I'll use my '88 M5 as a temporary daily driver.
This is my third E36 M3 and, by far, my best. I test drove over 10 that were uninspiring until finding this one. It runs much better than all of them. I wonder if it's because it's a late year '99 build.
I change the oil every 5,000 miles with Amsoil Series 2000 20W50 and use a Mahle Oil Filter. The air filter gets replaced every 10,000 miles. Every 30,000 it's the cabin filter, plugs/connectors (OEM), coolant (BMW), transmission fluid (Red Line) and differential fluid (Red Line). The fuel filter goes every 60,000 miles.
The car currently has 85,000 miles. The VIN is WBSBG9331XEY81506.
Since buying the car at 60,000 miles I've done the following mods/replacements:
- X-brace
- E46 M3 rear shock mounts
- Bilsteins all around
- entire cooling system
- DS1 wheels with Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D's
- exhaust mounts
- battery
- ceramic brakes/OEM rotors
- BMW rubber floor mats up front
- windshield wiper assemblies
- Viper Keyless Entry
- rear toe bushings with ground control limiters and welded around where it was just tac-welded at the factory
- stock HK sound system with Rainbow speaker upgrade (using the rear 6x9's as subs only) - sounds really good for a simple system
- front upper shock mounts
- UUC clutch arm bushings
- alignment (in late January '08)
The good is that it's a clear 10 out of a 10 mechanically. Pretty sure you won't find a better driving generally stock E36 M3. Burns/consumes almost no oil - less than 1/2 quart per 5,000 miles. Absolutely as solid as it gets.
The bad is a snapped driver's seat cable that prevents it from hinging up (although it almost doesn't matter at all). There was a slight fender bender in the rear that was fixed, but does not show up on a car fax. Pretty much a non-issue, but I felt the need to disclose. There's a few blemishes here and there, but not too many and none are too bad. It's not a concourse car, but still very nice. The rear defogger doesn't work. The CD changer sounds GREAT, but can be tempermental from time to time. It's been perfect lately, but once in a while it throws an error message. Removing and reinstalling the cartridge clears it up everytime. Not sure what the problem is, but it's probably a non-issue.
That's about it. I'd rate it an easy 10 mechanically and an 8 cosmetically. I went with the DS1's because I think that wheel defines the E36 M3. My asking price is $18,000 and I have the title. I have 7 months to sell it so there's no big hurry. Thank you for looking and please don't hesitate to inquire with any questions. I'm in Yardley, PA.
Thanks.

obnoxious2 01-27-2008, 06:55 PM LOL. For all the little problems you have listed and a ridiculous asking price of 18k. The cleanest m3 I've ever seen the owner was asking for only 16.5 and his seats weren't even worn as yours. And his paint was more pristine. Good luck rofl
KGB557 01-27-2008, 07:19 PM $18,000 wow!
Price goes up $500 for every thread hijacking. Now asking $19,000.

Ah I see! Using the classic "cutting off your nose to spite your face" sales technique! I applaud you for laughing in the face at any tactic that might help you sell your car.
Good luck with the sale.
It obviously won't sell here, but was worth the shot. In the mean time, might as well close the thread to avoid more disturbing behavior. I wonder about the need for those who have no interest in a car to hijack a "For Sale" thread. Check back when you move out of your parent's home.

ViniZaoD 01-27-2008, 09:45 PM Selling my Camry beater.
It has been in one crash where a redneck broke off the back bumper(fixed). It was in an unreported slide into a guardrail that sheared some paint of the side. 187K miles. Interior is somewhat clean but slightly worn.
Asking price: 10K.

Look man. Its great that you're trying to get top dollar for your car. If you can find the right buyer then more power to you. But if you post on an enthusiast board, you've got to expect a reality check on your price. Almost four years on this board and you didn't see this coming?
It's cool. You can let it go. No biggie although I think I just realized that I have way too much free time.
madspeed 01-27-2008, 11:10 PM people, if the man wants 18k or 50k for his car, he probably has his reasons for it, like hes not desperate to sell, he's willing to wait, he doesnt have to feed his family by selling this car etc. No reason to be nasty because he has a high asking price. good luck on the sale to the OP.
e30evo 01-28-2008, 02:47 PM 18k. :rolleyes
Anyone who thinks I'm full of **** might, in fact, be right, but you're free to take a spin and then report your findings back to the forum. I speak only pure truth although it'll more than likely sell locally just from the "For Sale" sign so do with me as you wish. It really doesn't matter. In the mean time it'll stay maintained as if I'm keeping it forever.
Perfectly understandable if no one here is interested, but in keeping with the theme of current maintenance, both front upper shock mounts just got replaced along with an alignment and I just put in a set of UUC clutch arm bushings (that I highly recommend for anyone) and a rubber cover on top of the front shock tower. I'll include the 2nd set of DS1's which have no tires on them. If the car makes it through the winter the 2nd set of DS1's will be installed with brand new Yokohama S.drive's and the current DS1's/Dunlop winter tires will, of course, be included. If you're looking and find a better cared for and better running car then you should definitely buy it.
Alrighty; I've since replaced the rear shock mounts with UUC's which took the "bite" off of the Bilsteins - a great mod. Yokohama S.drives are on there which are a great basic summer tire. Nothing spectacular, but a good economical choice. If the car doesn't sell I'll probably bite the bullet and go with RE-01A's or PS2's next time around.
Also, there was some slight dripping which was easily traced to the valve cover gasket. Just replaced.
Just did all 4 02 sensors at 85,000 miles for no particular reason and all fluids, plugs, coolant and filters at 90,000.
I've got 94,000 unmolested miles and the car's still available. I'm probably Honda Civic-bound for my daily driver.
Thanks.
m3gent 05-19-2008, 07:46 PM tell us more about that '08 jetta.
tell us more about that '08 jetta.
Thanks for asking. It's a real toss-up; with also a Mini in the mix. The smart choice would be the Civic. It's the reliability no-brainer of its day. I'm bringing it to the Honda dealership tomorrow to see how much they'll rape me on a trade-in so it's likely that I won't make that move. Can't hurt to see, though.
The Mini might be the coolest choice, but not necessarily the most practical, with a young family and huge dog. I might be a real trend setter in the '08 Jetta TDI. Orders are being taken starting in June. If I were to sell the M3 and end up opting for the Jetta I'd probably just drive my M5 until it comes out in September.
But, the smart choice might really be the Civic even though it might encourage feminine tendancies - no more than thread hijackers, though; not that there's anything wrong with that.
Golden Arms 05-19-2008, 09:10 PM your better off keeping the car for the money you spent on it... the car is nice and clean and well maintained....but idk about 18k for M3 with 94k miles. good luck with the sale.

That's probably what's going to happen. I drive a lot (so a more economical care makes more sense), but maybe I can sell it to someone who understands what's into it and that it doesn't burn or consume any oil, runs particularly strong (throughout the entire powerband) and is mechanically flawless. I'd put money on me driving it until it's lived out its useful life, but can't hurt to try.
Thought I'd give it another shot. Leaning towards the '09 Jetta TDI which comes out in about a month and a half. Just turned 100,000 miles and it's just barely getting broken in.
Recent stuff:
- UUC Rear Shock Mounts (to take the bite off of the stiff Bilsteins and it did)
- Yokohama S.drives (they're OK)
- front upper shock mounts (they were a little worn)
- valve cover gasket (small amount of leakage that most would have missed)
- aFe Air Filter (unexpected power gain)
- all 4 O2 sensors (just because)
- switched to Total 5W40 Motor Oil (and like it a lot)
- the whole transmission and differential fluid, plugs, coolant and cabin filter thing
- alignment
Again, I'm doubting that I'll find a buyer, but the price is not more negotiable than before. It's a tough market, but thought I'd give it another try (and I've listed here only because I'm lazy).
It's probably not a stretch to say that there's not a better running generally stock E36 M3 out there.
I'm now open to negotiations.
One final bttt. I'm too lazy to advertise elsewhere so if it's meant to be...

Exactly. People need to keep discussions on price out of the for sale forums. It doesn't help anything.
The greatest force that will correct a high price is the market, it's self-adjusting.

The most perfect car of all time would be the car I sold you with this engine. Thanks for the comments, too.
On second thought, my M5 is sorta up there. A tiny drop of seeping transmission fluid (from my M5) appeared on my garage floor and I freaked out until I found that it was fine. I still care for the M3 like none other.
E30Alpina 08-14-2008, 08:29 PM Awww.. it makes me sad that she is in heaven. Good luck with the sale!!
initialz 08-16-2008, 07:15 PM Bump...Looks like a nice ride Cory. Sorry it's taken so long to sell...hate that! Especially when you have a nice ride!!

Thanks for the post. That certainly could be the reason, but I think it's more in being bratty punks who have yet to accomplish anything meaningful in their empty lives. I'm just say'in.
It makes me long for the Civic, but these "imposters" are not the norm, really. I'm near certain, too, that they're Democrats with Obama stickers on the c*nts.
Alright; I'm OK now. Thanks for the platform to vent. Phew, that was close.
I'm open to price reductions, though, of course. I really don't want to see someone go through life and then, on their deathbed surrounded by their loving family, wonder "what if" with "Cory's Bimmer" being their last uttered words.
