View Full Version : K9 in the fuse box? joecautela 01-26-2008, 09:55 PM - Anybody familiar w/ this spot in the fuse box? I checked the book, didn't see anything. CW6er 01-26-2008, 11:38 PM K9 is the Power Window Relay, what is it you need to know? http://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/bmwetm102c.jpg http://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/etm102.htmhttp://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/etm102.htm CW6er 01-26-2008, 11:45 PM Here is the BCG Tech Library on replacements of all of the relays: http://www.normgrills.net/bcg/Electrical.html#Anchor-Electrical-47857 Layne 01-27-2008, 03:46 AM Try to keep dogs out of your fusebox! joecautela 01-27-2008, 09:23 AM Well that's kinda interesting, cause there is no relay plugged in and my pwr windows work!? hmmm...The only things not working at this time are my interior lights (they work from the roof switches) and for that I found the d/s door switch disconnected and also some funky blue box laying in the d/s panel under the dash that had 3 brwn wires just about cut off and a black and red wire attached to it. So I was thinking that maybe that had something to do with the interior lites. The second thing that doesn't work is the speedo and odo. I'm waiting for a differential sender for that and then pull the cluster if I have to. Oh and my cigarette lighter doesn't work which really pisses me off and is rapidly moving up on the priority list! As far as I can tell everything else works, even that panel on the left with all the lights and that obc thing is lit up telling me what the temp is outside. I don't dare push the obc button on the turn stalk though, I figure just leave well enough alone! So what do you think? Maybe I should get a relay, plug it in and see what happens?....POOF!! maybe I should have an extinguisher handy too...zzzzt! Hey, thanks! joecautela 01-27-2008, 11:20 AM So I just went outside to get a better look, stuck my test lite in the holes of K9 and nothing. It seems to be empty of any wiring. I am going back with a magnifying glass to verify but my test lite is good. While there I got looking at the other relays. In one row all the green relays face one way and the black one at the end is opposite. In the next row all the greens are opposite of the 1st row and the same w/ the black one on the end of row 2. Now is that funky doo dah or what!? you can also see the 2 outboard relays which I take to be fuel pump and some other jazz. And that's it...anybody with a euro have a similar setup? 'cause I'd really like to know...also, fuses 3,7,and 18 did not power up, but they're big 25 and 30 amperes, so I'm figuring a/c compressor, fan blower motor, and...auxiliary fans? joecautela 01-27-2008, 11:23 AM I think I forgot one or two.. Layne 01-27-2008, 01:48 PM Mine has a spare relay stashed in that slot. I pulled it out the other day and like you, realized there was no wiring under it. I assume its either made as a spare holder, or to use for some accesory that neither of us have. I also have working power windows. I do not have the extra 2 relays hanging off the end. CW6er 01-27-2008, 06:00 PM Ahh .... I just noticed that both of you guys have Euro's. The windows are one of the differences in the wiring. As a "Child safety feature". the U.S. spec cars won't allow the windows to work with the key off (or out). The Euro spec, IIRC, will work if the doors are opened with the key off, I think the relay is relocated to under the kick panel and that it goes to earth through the door jam light switch as well as the key. It is mentioned in this thread (scroll down): http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3510&highlight=interior+lights+windows The interior lights have what looks like an over sized relay that contains the timer for the interior lights located next to the nylon connector block under the D/S kick panel, but is seems like it is usually black. Do you have a picture of the "blue box"? http://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/bmwetm134.jpg Layne 01-27-2008, 06:43 PM The Euro spec, IIRC, will work if the doors are opened with the key off That's correct. I didn't realize the USA cars were different. I don't at all understand the relationship between the door being open and the windows working. What good is that supposed to be? joecautela 01-27-2008, 09:21 PM The Blue Box, it seems to be a door chime...Layne, when you looked at your fuse box, which way were all the relays facing? Are they like mine or different? any photos? Alex E24 E30 01-27-2008, 11:14 PM I got the same K9 issue as Joe and Layne. Same interior light issue as Joe, but it can't be a dead door switch because I have lighted window switches that work with the doors open, along with the operable windows sans key. I'll have to check the relay box on the switch orientation. Think I have a spare relay like Layne, but I don't recall. I also have a dead cig lighter slot. Well, it puts out 6-8 volts. My E30 did the same thing, and I never figured it out. I don't at all understand the relationship between the door being open and the windows working. What good is that supposed to be? It's convenient when you forget to roll up the window after pulling the key out or on a hot day when you need the windows down but don't have a key...assuming your doors are unlocked, that is. I use it for bragging rights. Alex Layne 01-27-2008, 11:34 PM I can snap a pic, joe, but don't worry about the orientation, it's not possible to put them in wrong. That blue thing is definatly not original, probably part of an alarm or some other useless trinket, throw it away. Agreed about the windows, they all should work without the key (roll up ones do, after all). I think I figured out the relationship to the door though, if they were always powered, a thief could possibly jamb a wire in the window gap and with enough patience roll the window down. Alex E24 E30 01-28-2008, 01:10 AM Never thought of that...but why did you?:devillook Layne 01-28-2008, 01:53 AM Because I refuse to believe that BMW would do something so bizarre for no reason at all, and I had to justify it. joecautela 01-28-2008, 09:25 AM I haven't noticed whether or not my windows go up and down w/out a key, seems bizarre. In the course of strightening this beast out I'll ck the wiring on the sw's. For now though while the door jamb sw. is out, the interior lights can still be turned on manually and the window switches light up nicely. I did notice in some obscure drawing somewhere a cat pre heater working on a relay in the K9 spot. It was later model US spec., so...To hell with the K9 and the hell with which way the relays are facing! Pretty much everythings working or close to it...and why mess up a good thing right?...thanks for the help guys...and I will get that cig lighter working, I don't care if I have to go all the way to the battery. It's awfully handy (for smoking) charging the cell phones. Joe Alex E24 E30 01-29-2008, 12:10 PM Let us know how the cig tracking comes out. It would be a handy gadget to have working for keeping my iPod going on the extended drive home. Alex CW6er 01-29-2008, 12:39 PM Does the power anttena work? Seems pretty straight forward to fix: http://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/bmwetm146.jpg joecautela 01-29-2008, 12:43 PM -yeah I was just looking at the etm. It seems there's a junction at S315, power goes to the antennae and then to the cig liter. My antennae does work so maybe that's a good place to start and see if a wire is disconnected.
