View Full Version : Will it really be 6 weeks?

I just placed my order for a new 328i the other day and put down a pretty hefty deposit. The dealer said the car should be ready for pickup within 6 weeks. They gave me my production number and Im anxiously awaiting shipment.

Is it reasonable to think it might be ready before the full 6 weeks? Or in your experience does BMW usually take the full amount of time (or longer :( )??

thanks!

Did he mention your build date? It is typically 6 weeks from build to delivery but of course YMMV.

they didnt say anything specifically about the build date. Right now the status on their website is "order received". Hopefully it will be moving into the next status within the next few days.

IMO with the car in that status you may be looking at more like 8 weeks. That is the timeframe mine took and I've seen several other people post similar results.

thats just great. If thats true I wish the dealer was more up front about it. They know I want it as soon as possible, but if it actually takes 8 weeks they are going to have one ticked off customer.

I would not assume that. I placed my order with the dealer and it was not entered into the BMW system for a week due to holidays/vacations here in the US and it still only took 5.5 weeks from the day I gave them my order until I was driving home. I live in NJ, so you might be an extra day or two tops for travel.

There are some great posts on the whole process and how to track progress on e90post.com.

I ordered my E90 on Jan 11. It was built and trucked to Bremerhaven last week and it's now awaiting a vessel for Port Hueneme (near Oxnard) in California.

Waiting is brutal for us enthusiasts.

That's why I said IMO. It was just that, my opinion. However it wasn't just based on how long my car took, it was also based on things I've read here and on e90post. If you got yours in 5.5 weeks that's great. If the OP gets it in 6 that's great too, and I hope he does. I was just offering my opinion that 8 weeks seems to ALSO be a pretty common time for order to delivery.

So far it looks like the 800 number is much more accurate than the Owners Circle website on bmwusa.com. The website says that my car is still "On Order" but the 800# says its in production and scheduled to be completed on 1/31. I like that status much better!!

If anyone else is waiting on an order like I am, I would advise calling the number instead of checking the website. (800) 831-1117

Yep....the website is usually a week behind. Much easier to call the number.

SPH328i consider yourself lucky in the great US of A! My lowly 320i Cabrio arrived this week and I will take delivery this weekend, and I ordered it on Oct. 2, 2007!!! 4 months ago! What agony!

Just curious, would you be able to enjoy driving your BMW in HK? I mean it is a very crowded city from what I hear. Are there any nice drives outside the city?

HK is a pretty crazy place. You'll find BMWs everywhere. LA/Orange in the US has tons of BMWs everywhere and it's nothing compared to HK.

Not to mention the exotics... Ferraris, Lambos, Zondas... not very rare over there. And to think the cars there cost more then have about 100% in taxes plopped on them.

My cousin from HK plays a game where you get points for spotting exotic cars while walking/driving around. Ferraris (Enzo excluded) and Lambos are only worth 1 point.

You're correct it's very crowded in HK and the speed limit on majority of the 'freeways' is only 80 km! There is a stretch of freeway that allows you to go 100km and the one leading to the airport can go as high as 110km. These are the exact reasons I've chosen the 320i over larger displacement versions...there's just no use for a large engine as I've found out with my E350. I am very certain I will enjoy my new Cabrio very much even though I can't go very fast.

And to eisenb11, you are correct that exotics are everywhere! I spot a Ferrari, Lambo & Zonda just about every other day and that's not even in the metro areas. BWM's, MB's, Audi's, Porsche's are like Toyota's & Honda's in the states...there's one (or more) around every street corner.

wow. If mine takes 4 months I might have a breakdown. The anxiety is killing me!. According to the 800# my car should be completed from production on Thursday. But who knows how long it will be from there until it actually ships!

I think a day or 2 ago I spotted an "I just got my car" thread from a person who just received his 08 328Ci in Canada... 6 month wait from the order date to the pickup date... ouch!!!

A lot of us waited 4 months+ for our cars to come in. Feel fortunate its only 6 weeks.

Then I guess I should say I feel lucky...especially now that I'm only 3 days away from taking delivery! lol

Does anyone know what the average wait is once your car completes production? It would seem like the rest of the process should be quick. But Ive been told it could take another 5 weeks once its completed and ready to ship.

Some of the variance there can be explained by when it gets to the dock. Sometimes it gets to the dock and there is a ship there for it to be loaded onto that leaves almost immediately. Sometimes it has to wait there either for a ship to arrive, or if the ship is there it could be near the beginning of the load process and you have to wait for the rest of the ship to be loaded and sail. This can add up to a week or more to the timeline.

FWIW here was my timeline.

12/7/2006 Ordered
12/20/2006 Scheduled for Production
1/8/2007 Being Transported to Exit Port Location
1/11/2007 Loaded on AIDA
1/30/2007 Discharged at Port of NY
2/3/2007 Car arrived at Dealer (Eastern PA)
2/8/2007 Took Delivery

my e90 335 came in 5 weeks

That seems really quick. Was it a custom order or did they just slap your name on a car that was already allocated to them and partially or fully built and already at the dock or on the way to the dock? Production takes about 2 weeks and shipping from Germany to Port of NY takes almost 3 weeks. That doesn't count any lag times, PDC at the port, transport to dealer, dealer prep, etc.

I ordered my 2008 328i sedan on the 10th of December -- as of today, it is at the Preparation Center - so that's 7 weeks if I am counting correctly. My dealer should have the (N. Cal) car in a week or two, by my guess. I'm not in a burning rush, so that's cool. Didn't know that I could track my order online....kinda neat!

Production takes about 2 weeks

Production only takes a week most of the time actually. I read that before I ordered my car and through following it's progress it took 7 days exactly until it was awaiting a ship for transport. If you track production through the BMW website it's usually a week behind, that may be where the confusion is. I agree that 5 weeks overall does appear very quick though!

i was also told 6 weeks (give or take) from my dealer.

I live in northern California. I ordered mine on Jan 11 and I will have the 1st week of March, which amounts to about 8 weeks. But my ship stopped in Georgia, which cost me a couple of days. I'd estimate about 7 1/2 weeks for the west coast, which is what a previous order took. I don't know how many days to subtract for the east coast. But all of that assumes not having any unusual delays, like waiting for a production slot or a long wait for a vessel.

I ordered mine on January 26th and according to the ship tracking, mine is supposed to be coming into New York tomorrow (2/25). I've heard that it takes about a week once it arrives at the final port for it to make it to the dealer and be ready to pick up. Hope thats true! Then I should have it by end of next week.

Just ordered my 328xi yesterday. The dealer told me straight up 6-8 weeks. My current lease is up April 30th. Hopefully it is here on time, or else the dealer will have to give me a loaner, er... beater for a while! I went to the website and it said Arctic White instead of Deep Green Metallic. Not cool. Hopefully it updates to match the order.

yeah the color gets updates once they actually receive your order and it moves into full production. Mine took a few days to actually update to the correct color.

I just placed my order for a new 328i the other day ^^Posted 1/26

I ordered mine on January 26th

Since your order timeline is the one we're discussing in this thread, which was it?? Hard to know how long it took in the end with conflicting start dates.

Yes, I am very happy to say that I picked up my new toy 2 days ago. It was a total of 2 days short of 6 weeks. I was very impressed by the speed. I had to make sure I kept on top of the dealer though. I kept getting different answers on the actual ship date, but in the end it worked out fine.

The only recommendation I would make is to continue asking the dealer. I was able to get mine several days sooner simply because I asked them about it repeatedly so they moved my delivery up a few days (probably just to make me stop calling them!)

I'm very happy with the new car.

yeah waiting those 6 weeks was torture but it was definitely worth the wait. Now I just have to deal with the paranoia that comes with driving a brand new black car...I'm constantly worried someone is going to key it or scratch it (I have 3 kids) and so I park as far away from other people as I can. I guess a little extra walking in store parking lots is worth it...
