That black one was around and racing before M cars existed. The factory-backed JPS team raced BMWs at Mt Panorama in Australia under the control of Frank Gardner from 1981 with Alan Grice & David Hobbs, and most notably from 1982 onwards with Jim Richards and a variety of co-drivers. In 1985 there were six BMW 635CSis competing at Bathurst. Not all of them finished, but they were there..!
The JPS BMW team was also a strong and ground-breaking performer at a variety of levels in Australian motorsport throughout the early/mid 80s.
This is an article from the 1981 James Hardie 1000 race program.

Kaotiq 01-28-2008, 01:30 AM The pictures I posted include some of the Group C cars (pre '85) and a some of the Group A cars ('85 & '86).
The team won the touring car championship in '85 and so BMW decided to bring the 635 into Australia, at Bathurst in '85 the Orange Bob Jane Sponsored 635 came second to one of the Jag XJS's.
Cheers,
Iain

actually - not really - since the 3.0 CSL was the first car that motorsport ever did anything to - it's considered the "first M car".
sorry - i'm a nit picker -
like the pics though - especially the ones lee posted wit Erik's car.

Yeah, fair enough, you got me there! Nit pickers have their moments!
I guess I was thinking only of Ms in the E24 sense.
jcsomerset 01-29-2008, 10:26 AM from another point of view - you are absolutely correct that the E24's were racing (and winning, I might add) before there was anything actually called an "Msomething". the M1 was a 1979 critter and the first one badged as such.
roccaas 01-29-2008, 06:17 PM Seems like the "wee Scotsman" should be driving a car that looks that good. His JPS F1's are still the best looking Formula cars of all time.
BTW, is the Red Shark in an opposite lock drift or a turn in as shown in picture 2 above?
