I got the sport package wheels and they are very nice, but I eventually want to upgrade to some "sportier" e90 wheels. What's the most ecomonical way to do this? Go through the dealer? Do they take wheel trade-ins? Assuming I get e90 wheels, do I need to change my tires as well, or is it feasible to keep the same tires regardless of what e90 wheels I decide to get?
Do folks typically upgrade to sportier OEMs or do folks usually get other brands?
Looking to learn-

Well obviously if you get a different size rim, you need new tires, otherwise what you have can be remounted on the new rims. What size do you have now, I assume it is 17": with the sports package? Do you know which style?
Why are you looking to change them? Want bigger wheels? You don't like the looks of these ones?
You can go all the way up to 19", although you pay a high premium for such wheels and esp. for tires (particularly RFTs) when you go up to 18 or 19.
The dealer will not exchange wheels and will probably buy back your old ones at pennies for the dollar, so your best bet it eBay or finding someone here to buy them if possible. Check out the /For sale sections of the forum. Also OEM wheels esp. from the dealer will cost big $$ (we're talking north of 4K for 18" wheel/tires). You are better off going aftermarket or finding a used set or a set from someone like you who is taking off his stocks to upgrade.
You'll also have to take the Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors (TPMS) into account. If you have metal valve stems on the current wheels, you either need to move them over to the new ones or buy a new set which cost somewhere between 100-150$ or so.
Finally do some searches on the forum, and check out the tore/wheel section, there is a lot of information.

Thanks! currently, I have 17" Light-alloy wheels Double Spoke (style 161) and 225/45R17 (F) and 225/4017 (R). I was thinking of staying in the 17" realm, but am open to 18". 19" is a bit too large. I am looking to change them just for pure aethstetics. I like the looks of my current ones, but I know down the road, I will want sportier ones. I was not aware of the tore/wheel section - I will check it out.
I'll have to do a bit more research on the TPMS issue to undersstand it.
Anyhow, thanks for your help!

How'd that affect your performance and handling, I'm curious? Those are quite wide tire for this car.

So your accelerations weren`t impacted? Also I`m wondering how the added weight and extra width of the fronts affected your turn-in steering response.

economical and wheel upgrade aren't two concepts that should be considered together.
