Since I'm not having much luck on the electronics section:
Alarms on E36 convertibles was optional?
Keyless entry onE36 convertibles was standard?

Hrm.. OK.
(considering it's a 99) Can you have keyless entry without the alarm?

I have a question- I just bought a ti and the dealer says it does not have keyless entry available, what is the little red light near the cigarette lighter for? Does it have alarm without keyless entry?

Can the brains of the alarm be swapped out/replaced with any OEM system?

pretty sure you can get one from any E36, and possibly other models...
should be able to find an OEM part number for the alarm and compare that with others.

BAVAUTO also sells the BMW alarms. I think Stellar makes the factory alarms!!

I don't think Stellar makes the factory alarms. The factory alarms work, stellars are absolute crap.

Keep in mind there is a difference in factory-fitted alarms and BMW-approved alarms that were build in later.
For the e36, your best off with the BMW option 302 "Alarm with remote control" which is the EWS2 system.
Identifiable by the EWS 2 key, which is central locking/key/alarmfob in one.
Here's my never used spare one:

That alarm and key fob was not available in the states.
The alarm part number for a US 96+ car is: 82 11 1 469 444

Update: went to the local indy shop to see if they could give any free advice, but they weren't too confident in suggesting anything. So Saturday afternoon I took the kickpanel off to look at it, unplugged the whole thing, checked the fuse, checked the antenna, blew out the connection area, and plugged it back in. While there I decided to try the fob right next to the unit (just in case is was an antenna problem).
This time, the spare fob worked but the main one still didn't, so I really don't know what happened.
