View Full Version : Full CF bodied m6 gt car
lughed 01-25-2008, 12:54 AM So there entering the M6 with full CF panels and e39 M5 motor in the Rolex Sports car Series this year. I'm starting this thread because i've been trying to find out more about the car being i havent heared to much about it. It was just a rumor last year but come Sat. January 26, 2008 the car will actually be racing. There doesnt seem to be much excitement around it, especially since the M6 is the first full race BMW gt car to be raced since the M3 gtr was banned in early 2000. If anyone has info on this please post or just let us hear your thoughts on how you think the car will do for the race season.
Steve J. 01-25-2008, 01:01 AM Search in the pro forum, its been discussed, as well as on the Grand Am forum.
Its not an M6, it just looks like one.
There is one for sale, $250k. Spec riley chassis, S62...its a tube frame, not unibody. Its a Prep2 GT entry.
Check youtube, there are already videos up from its test days...there are even some test drivers of it who parooz this forum.
I seem to remember many BMW's racing since 2000...you should turn on Speed for some of the races, they've had decent coverage.
It has potential, but its as close to a factory m6 as the Daytona prototype is to a Camaro...its a shame BMW doesn't like the US, they could probably do really well here.
The Fello 01-25-2008, 01:59 AM i was there today to watch them qualify and i got to take a look at it
automatic racing from central fl are racing it . also with the 3 pink and green m3s in koni challenge
but yea i think i herd it was a e39 m5 motor with the vanos deleted
the body looks amazing with every body panel CF this is a pic i got last week at test day. SRY 4 the pic its my cellphone

yes there are plenty of bmw's racing but what i meant was an all out, tube chassis, practicly full blown race car such as the M3 gtr. Bmw dont like the U.S. so much because whenever they build a gtr and begin sweeping events to the point where its not even competative, officials or other manufacturers begin looking for so called incompliance with regulations. Such was the case with the E46 M3 GTR and the origianl 88 Race spec M3. When Porche and Ferrari get knocked of the pedistal and stomped on, theres always something that comes up and majority of the time Bmw is the cause.
Steve J. 01-25-2008, 06:46 PM Um, ok?
The GTR chassis were run again, just with the S54. I'd still consider that a "full blown race car." Plus, that Riley tube frame is nothing special...BMW could do a lot better if they put 1/100th of the F1 budget into it...hell or even run the Z4M MS "GTR" chassis, then they would be in the same GT class as the other unibody cars. In the big picture, the GTR chassis is not worls different than the normal MS chassis when you are putting tube frames in the mix. Its still a unibody based car, with stock style suspension (uses trailing arm and single front control arm).
Not quite sure what you are getting at.
Eitherway, its nowhere near an M6, they should just call it BMW GT, not even worth putting a model name on it, as its just representing some carbon fiber.
M3's raced before 1988.
When else has BMW beaten Porsche and Ferrari? They have not raced in similar classes much in history.
lughed 01-25-2008, 07:36 PM You are right about the gtr chassis but its not the M3 gtr which is what i was getting at. The last time the gtr was raced in AMERICA was i believe when it swept 8 of 11 races in ALMS. The car was banned because porche and ferrari complained that the factory m3 was not produced with a V8 there for the gtr was not in compliance with regulations. Even if true, I find it funny why the entire series went by before any actions were taken. I'm sure they new of the power plant before hand.
I meant 88 m3 as in the production year. Maybe i should have said e30 m3. Remember the e30 m3 swept all the races of a few series events.
The 2 times or series mentioned above that porche and ferrari were completly out performed, dominated are only 2 of the times that bmw has demounted them. But it was done before that with the 3.0 csl and it is being done now with the M3GTR and the MZ4 GTR. Thats what i meant by bmw is the cause.
I just read the thread about the Rolex m6 and i found out alot of info that i didnt know. But i completly agree with you about this Rolex m6 which isnt a m6 at all. In fact i just found out its no different from most the other race cars in the series including suspension!

if you go back into the pits, check out Autometrics Motorsports, they are running 2 porsche gt cars. I work for them as a second job, but due to some career issues i couldnt go down this year, but i was there last year, its INSANE to crew for the race.
mijgilbert 01-26-2008, 09:31 AM I was surprised to see Jeff Segal racing in the Speedsource Mazda in the Rolex, not the BMW M6? He raced to 4th place in the Automatic M3 in the Koni race... I really thought he was going to be piloting the BMW M6. Anyone know what's up?
Steve J. 01-26-2008, 10:52 AM He's had the RX8 ride for a while.
I think the RX8 has more potential right now anyways, the M6 has some time before its "developed." While its the same Riley chassis, and its basically a DP motor, the chassis is setup differently than the RX8.
speedminded 01-26-2008, 01:49 PM My only contribution to this thread is the correct spelling of Porsche. :D
