I am involved in a project where we are replacing the engine in a 1993 318i with one out of a 1995 318i. The block is mounted, and the wiring finished, but we cannot seem to figure out bolting on the transmission. The chassis has a manual transmission, we're not sure if the engine came from an automatic or not. Does anyone think this is the problem? Or is there something else we should be looking at?

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

You should be able to tell from the flywheel. I you trying to attach an engine with an automatic flywheel to a manual transmission, the attempt will be futile. You must remove the clutch/flywheel and install it onto the new engine. The bolts are longer for the manual flywheel, so swap those over too. Please, whatever you do, just do not forget to install a pilot bearing in the auto crankshaft, or you will be in serious trouble. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!!! Everything should go in smooth. If it doesnt, remove it and inspect it.

Thanks for the quick response and helpful info. Unfortunately, going to be a few days before we get back to work on it, I'll post with any updates
