I changed my water pump a couple months ago. While tightening a bolt in the upper extraction hole, the pump housing broke. The regular bolt wouldn't fit into the lower extraction hole because the bolt head was hitting the bottom of the water pump, so I used a allen head bolt with the same thread size. It's important to tighten the upper and lower extracting bolts at the same rate to avoid removing the pump crooked. In my case and everyone else that has had this problem, the water pump was seized anyway so the aluminum housing disintegrated. I didn't wasn't to hammer on it or do anything that would risk cracking or weakening the integrity of the block, so I used a big ass pair of channel locks to grip the pump. After a couple of left to right twists and a sharp yank, the pump slid right out.

You just gotta kick the pumps ass, without kicking your engine block's ass. I wouldn't advise hammering or prying against anything. The reason they get stuck is because of that big ass o-ring they use. Twist it left and right a couple times and then jerk that MFer out.

I helped a club member do one not to long ago, it was easy. Within a couple of hours we swapped a water pump, thermostat, BS'd and checked his brakes. Did you use a manual of any kind?

I don't think it was an issue of knowledge, as the pump was just seized in the motor. I've seen water pumps so corroded that they had to be drilled through and removed in pieces. Fortunately never on a BMW. Lets see how bad yours was Ducky.

head gasket is trashed...i wanted to trade it in on something four-door for the kid in may, but she wants it fixed...so im about to go max out my credit card again with a head gasket job, cuz i dont have the time to do it myself...ill post pics of the WP in a few mins...:shifty

EDIT:

shes not totally controlling my decision on fixing it...im not whipped THAT bad, BUT i have a really low car payment on that thing, that i WOULDNT be able to beat on another car, and this way i save myself SOME hassel...

i just want to say again that i absolutely, with a passion, HATE m44's....:mad
