View Full Version : Ipods and the old bus.
gene12 01-21-2008, 05:17 PM I have a 95 740i and am interested in knowing if there is any workaround that will allow me to plug an ipod into the system and have the sound magically appear out of the speakers?
Not talking about an FM radio or tape kit, looking for a hard wired workaround that will also charge the ipod.
To add to my greed, I would also be interested in having the steering wheel inputs be functional. I have a tape player in the dash and was wondering whether it could be hooked in at that point and then have the dongle exit the coin holder?
Actually, I am looking for any way to have this work with the exception of having a dealer or 3rd party charge me more than the car is worth.
Thanks in advance.

Short answer: there is no simple solution.
This is the only solution I have found:

However, it requires unsoldering and soldering to some very small parts. With enough know-how, you could easily make (or purchase) a 12V-5V converter and wire it all to a Dock connector.
Still no steering wheel control, however, although I bet it too would be possible to rig up with enough gusto.

Easy, cheap, and functional!
dophineh 01-22-2008, 01:05 AM Tape kit does work fairly well... and I'm not impressed with my 9 year old speakers to begin with, so the quality loss is a non issue.

Abdullah740 01-22-2008, 01:43 AM Has anyone tried the Harman Kardon Drive + Play?

Swordsman 01-24-2008, 04:52 PM For the cost and ease of use, the FM converter is really not too bad. I'd love to see my iPod screen on the Nav screen, but I'm not sure it is hundreds and hundreds of dollars better than my FM solution.
I'm not really an audiophile, I'll admit.
gene12 01-24-2008, 05:39 PM I am looking at the wiring and will decide whether there is a kludge I can come up with to take care of my problem. The FM converter may work, but the tape solution and the FM transmitter just plain s**k. Additionally, the commercial solutions do not work with this series of the car. The serial bus is the hangup. Will keep you posted.
jpilk99 01-24-2008, 08:18 PM I bought a Dice ipod and HD Radio setup for my 2000 750iL from european auto source dot com. ( can't type the actually link - I'm not allowed to yet). Go there and search on ipod or just click the "Audio..." option on the left hand side.
You end up installing it in lieu of your 6 CD changer and then the car and all it's controls will play your ipod just like a big stack of CDs. And the display comes out on the Nav display and the LCD display in the dash cluster.
Good stuff. Love it myself.

gene12 01-24-2008, 09:18 PM Guess I did not make myself too clear. Dice and all third party vendors do not make a kit for the 1995 model year. Dice only starts with model year 1998 or 1999. Have fun with your kit.
